The North Tonawanda DWI scandal involving Alderwoman Nancy Donovan's daughter took a strange twist today when the Buffalo News revealed that NT cop Nathan Achtziger was the person who "encouraged" the district attorney to have the charges reduced to a non-DWI offense:
Henry F. Wojtaszek said that when he arrived at City Court on July 15, he found Lt. Nathan D. Achtziger sitting in a conference room with Deputy District Attorney Theodore A. Brenner.
"He indicated to the [deputy] district attorney that he'd known Sara Donovan for many years and was sure she'd never be back in court," Wojtaszek said in an interview.
Achtziger, who became something of a local celebrity in the 1990s for writing as many as 8,000 speeding tickets in a year, was not the officer who arrested Donovan.
I spent a great deal of time in North Tonawanda during the late 80s/ early 90s and even graduated high school up there. There isn't a person in NT who doesn't know "officer Nathan". In fact, when I meet someone from North Tonawanda for the first time, one of the first things I ask them is if they ever heard of the guy. They usually roll their eyes and tell some crazy story or bizarre encounter they've had with him (or something they've heard about him). If even half of the stories I've heard about him are true, the special treatment he allegedly gave the daughter of a town official comes as no surprise to me. I know he had left the area briefly for another job in Arizona law enforcement, only to return back a short time later. Then there's this from the Lockport-Union Sun & Journal:

The police training lieutenant has a reputation earned as a traffic cop for showing little if any leniency to motorists stopped for speeding. Part of that reputation allegedly revolves around having written thousands of speeding tickets in a single year. An unconfirmed rumor has long existed that he once wrote a ticket to his own mother in law.
Achtziger wrote 8,000 speeding tickets in one year. He likes to ask lots of questions of citizens. Something tells me the citizens are going to be asking many questions about him in the very near future. Trying to alter a DWI case he wasn't involved in sounds like a pretty corrupt move to me. Hopefully, some North Tonawanda residents will read this and share with us some of the experiences they've had with "officer Nathan." I never met this guy, but he has "character" written all over him.
