Another day at the Erie County Holding Center

An op-ed in todays' Buffalo News questions an arbitrator's ruling giving back jobs to three sheriffs, including the Sergeant(Thomas Thompson) who instigated the whole chain of events by ordering the inmate to pick which deputy was going to punch him...

This ruling sends an unmistakable message to the jail staff and population that bad behavior perpetrated by authority figures will get nothing more than a slap on the wrist and a return of their taxpayer-paid jobs. Sgt. Thomas J. Thompson, 38, was set on finding the inmate who was hiding marijuana on one of the jail’s upper floors. Thompson questioned Heilmann and, when he didn’t get what he was looking for, threatened that a couple of deputies would punch him, unless Heilmann picked only one of the officers to deliver the blow.

Talk about gutless. Thompson obviously lacks the temperament to be in law enforcement. He's so tough that he orders his deputies to punch a defenseless man. I don't care how much of a scumbag the inmate might be. Hitting a man in handcuffs while surrounded by six of your friends does not make you tough. It actually makes one quite the opposite. The sad part is he probably goes out with his friends and talks about how tough he is. The whole thing was over someone hiding marijuana in their cell. Where is Sheriff Howard in all of this? I can't believe how much has happened under his watch with little or no consequences.
