New Jersey city lays off entire police force

Camden, New Jersey is planning on laying off it's 267 unionized police force and replacing them with 400 non-union County police officers...

“We’re concerned, we’re definitely concerned,” Camden Fraternal Order of Police President John Williamson told NBC News. “You’re going to create a police department and staff it with people who are unfamiliar with the city and say, ‘Go ahead and fight crime.’ That’s a recipe for disaster.”

I hope they follow up on this story to see exactly what effect this move has on crime in the city. I remember when Buffalo disbanded the Housing cops. D.A. Frank Clark got on television and predicted chaos and anarchy in the projects. We're still waiting for this to occur.

I'm not surprised cities are starting to look at different ways to do business. It's already happening with the schools. All you have to do is look at the popularity of charter schools. They are basically a union-busting enterprise. Don't trust the people who run these schools. Their main goal is not education, but profit. Since they pick and choose what students to keep, of course they do well on test rankings. I've worked in a charter school. They treat their teachers like slaves and teacher morale is terribly low.

As far as Camden goes, I don't think this move will cause more crime. I believe the cause of most crime is poverty. It seems like most police forces are reactionary anyway. In other words, they are called after a crime has been committed. In any event, expect to see more stories like this throughout the next decade as communities look for ways to save money and avoid collective bargaining agreements.

I don't think this would ever happen in Democratic led Buffalo. However, if it did, you'd see a lot of For Sale signs going up in Orchard Park and Hamburg. I wonder if the new police officers would be eligible for cosmetic surgery benefits?
One of most dangerous cities in US plans to ditch police force

Send Gaughan to Albany

I really hope voters are smart enough to elect Kevin Gaughan to the New York State Assembly. Other candidates like to refer to themselves as reformers (see Dim Kennedy and Mickey Kearns), but Gaughan has a proven track record of trying to make changes in the community. And how could you not support this?...

If elected, Gaughan plans to tackle issues such as:
* Reducing the State Senate from 63 seats to 50 and the Assembly from 150 to 125 seats, which he says would save taxpayers $88 million per year. He also plans to introduce legislation that would prohibit part-time politicians from receiving lifetime pensions, and would reduce his own salary by $20,000.

A candidate with a plan to save taxpayers money. Kennedy says he has created jobs, although none of us have seen them. Kearns sent out a taxpayer funded fluff piece two months after he ran as a "reformer." I believe Gaughan is serious about reducing the size of government and getting rid of these ridiculous pensions. After all, these were meant to be short term positions, not careers.

Gaughan has paid his dues. I believe if anyone is serious about shaking up Albany, it is him. Hopefully, the voters in this district will agree with me in a few weeks.

High school football picks

It's hard to believe, but on this 90 degree day in August, football season has arrived. And, despite the advice from his probation officer,  Buddy the Book has been scowling the sidelines evaluating the teams. He wishes to get the word out to the Ninja that his casino is open and he is taking bets. No bet is too big nor too small.

Buddy predicts South Park will get trounced by Hamburg this weekend. He is going with the Bulldogs minus 20 points. In the battle of the schools that both recently fired a guy named Al Monaco, Buddy is predicting an upset by his Bishop Timon Tigers over Williamsville South 35-28. On the national scene, he says put your money on USC as national champs.

Silver's bill an insult to all NY state students

Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver proposed a bill on Friday that would give financial aid to illegal immigrants at New York state universities. This, after SUNY recently raised tuition costs for current students and eliminated TAP funding for graduate students. The people are not this dumb and it's about time Sheldon Silver found a new occupation...

Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants would become eligible to receive government financial aid to attend college in New York under a bill that state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver introduced Friday.

Mickey Kearns and Tim Kennedy: the residents of your district, through this blog, will be closely monitoring how you vote on this bill. Supporting this bill will not be met kindly. You can decide now, whether you represent the people of your district or the deep pocketed Manhattan elitists. The choice is yours.

Bad news on the doorstep

There are two things I find funny about the Buffalo News. Unfortunately, for our endangered overpriced daily (soon to be weekly) newspaper, neither is for the right reasons.

Their Off Main Street column, where they actually attempt to be humorous, is usually about as funny as a child stricken with cancer. Unfunny people should not attempt humor. It's like when Michael Jordon attempted to be a professional baseball player or Bruce Willis, a singer. It usually doesn't end well. What I do find funny is that anyone would pay 75 cents a day to read Associated Press stories from two weeks ago.

The other waste of time is their local political endorsements. The News always goes with the favorites of the status quo. This part isn't funny, but when they attempt to justify their endorsement in print, it's pretty hilarious. You end up having two guys and a woman from Williamsville attempt to tell the readers why Joe Blow is the best choice to represent South Buffalo or the Fillmore District. These endorsements are merely ads, just like one of their full page ads for JC Penney.

I feel bad for A.J. Verel, Kevin Lafferty, or Paddy Burke, if any of them went down to the News interview yesterday thinking they actually had a chance to impress the editorial crooks, err I mean staff. I'm sure by now, the word has already been passed down to the bloodsuckers on Scott Street that Christopher Scanlon is going to be the savior of South Buffalo. It's nothing to be upset about, just business as usual. Thank God that paper is on it's last leg. I invite you three and the growing number of people affected by the News' bias to continue reading yours truly to get a different take on the news. I won't be describing the physical attributes of male subjects like Donny Esmonde, but I'll do my best to write the truth.

Newspapers are going the way of record players, rotary phones, and VHS tapes. While I miss those three, I won't miss the Buffalo News and it's status quo preserving agenda...

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step...

Not a joke: Kennedy is running for reelection based on his "proven" record of creating jobs

I can't believe the following quote was not put in the comics section of the Buffalo News. Tim Kennedy says he is running for reelection based on his ability to create jobs????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????...

In the past 19 months as a state senator, Kennedy says, he has fought dysfunction, created jobs and brought attention and money back to Western New York.

"I'm running on a record of proven results - of creating jobs and standing up for Western New York," he said.

Tim Kennedy wouldn't know the first thing about creating jobs. Politicians don't create jobs. Businessmen do. Has he seen the unemployment numbers for WNY? Where are these supposed jobs he's created?

Seriously, if you're a friend of mine or a union member and you vote for this imbecile, I don't even want to know about it, because I like to think my friends have at least a minimal amount of intelligence. As I've said before, his parents should call St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and demand a full refund. Kissing Brian Higgins' ass for twenty years does not constitute leadership or intelligence.
Tensions rise in contest between Grant, Kennedy

Dr. Dirty's house on fire

A strange story out of Clarence: A fire totally destroyed the house of singer/comedian John Valby, who said this is the second fire in less than one week. Fortunately, Clarence firefighters arrived on horse and buggy and were able to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.

This story from channel 4 is quite surreal, unless you are used to seeing someone escape a major fire and use the opportunity to tell one liners throughout the interview...

Valby, whose nickname is "Dr. Dirty" is known for his thoughtful and insightful lyrics. He's kind of like an X-rated Weird Al Yankovic. His most popular songs include Yank My Doodle, Jingle Balls, and LeRoy the Big Lipped N-word...

Williamsville South fires successful coach

I have to assume there is more to the firing of 24 year Williamsville South basketball coach Al Monaco than just complaints from a few parents over playing time...

One parent who spoke on condition of anonymity said Monaco gave extra playing time to certain players he knew well.

"He expressly did favor many friends and family. I definitely saw him favoring three students, people he knew," the parent said. "It has caused a lot of adverse reaction."

What a loser this parent must be. Maybe the reason your son gets limited playing time is because he flat out sucks! Or is simply mediocre at best. We all know how every successful high school coach loves leaving their best athletes on the bench. It's high school sports, not 10 and under T-ball. Tell your little over coddled brat to work harder during the off season.

I have to believe there is more to the story than just this. Unless more information comes out, we will be led to believe the superintendent caved in to a small group of wealthy, influential, over involved  parents. Maybe the next coach will make sure everyone plays equally and will pass out treats to the little snowflakes after each game.

Weekend at Bernies

This might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read in my life. Retired NBA Director of Security, Bernard Tolbert claims his opinion of former Common Councilmember Brian Davis changed after seeing him in a restaurant...

Bernard Tolbert, the former special agent in charge of the FBI office in Buffalo, said he recently witnessed evidence of Davis’ positive impact on the community.

“I was in a restaurant on Buffalo’s East Side where a group of women from a local senior citizens center happened to be having lunch,” Tolbert said. “Brian introduced me to these ladies and as a group, and to a person, the seniors spoke quite highly of the support that Brian provided to them and their center, both while he was a Council member and since.”

I'll tell you, when Davis admitted to stealing $38,000 of taxpayer dollars (that we know of), I thought he wasn't the greatest guy. But, if these four old ladies, from a Senior Center that relies on funding in exchange for votes, say he's a good man, it must all be a mistake. Come on, Bernie! Why not just admit that you're writing a letter for Davis because it benefits you politically? Are we supposed to believe members of the FBI are this gullible? You know, I saw a homicidal maniac the other night over at the Wayside. I was really petrified, until a couple of old ladies walked by, pinched his cheeks, and said he was a harmless psychopath.
Heavy punishment sought for Davis

And this is news why?

From the nobody cares department: Four women were scheduled last week at the Hollywood Palace Fire Station on Abbott Rd. What could have been a meaningless news story, evolved into an even more meaningless publicity stunt for the Keanes (formerly of South Buffalo)...

The scheduling of four women on Engine 4 happened unintentionally as a result of call-ins and vacations.
For the four women, three firefighters and one lieutenant, the day felt like a normal one but included better conversation and more laughter.

"We've been laughing since we came in the door this morning," said Lt. Kate Keane.

"Call-ins" seems to be a unique term reserved for police and fire positions. At most jobs (including most civil service jobs), if you call in so many times, eventually you won't have a job to call in to. In any event, this story is pointless, even by the Buffalo News' low standards. The Keane infomercial continues for a few more paragraphs...

And although Keane, the lieutenant, didn't plan to be a firefighter, she ended up following in the footsteps of her mother. Margaret Keane was part of Buffalo's first class of female firefighters and the first female deputy commissioner of the department. Keane was planning to become a teacher but decided on a whim to take the test with Burke, she said.

Keane's father was also a fireman for about two weeks before he went off to serve in Vietnam, err, I mean Thailand. Now he's taken all of our tax dollars down to Florida, but once in awhile resides in Orchard Park. I think these women are terrific role models for the next generation of the South Buffalo entitled elite. They should go to Mt. Mercy and speak directly to the next generation of political families and their friends. They can tell them what South Buffalo bars to frequent during their college years and which politicians they need to grease right away to get hired for their "pre-firefighting" position (dispatcher, teacher's aide, city office clerk, etc). They can give speeches on exactly when the right time to make the "South Buffalo phone call" to Brian Higgins is and when it would better serve them to give Byron a call.  For the girls from the non-political families with similar education, they can help them set more realistic goals (cashier at WalMart, JC Penney's, or leaving the area, for example.)

If the News wanted to do a story on affirmative action, why not do a story on the great success it's had on our neighborhood schools? Since Judge Curtin decided to singlehandedly save the world, people have fled the suburbs to Buffalo to enroll their kids in its superior public schools. His integration program had the exact opposite effect. The schools in the suburbs are nearly 100% white.

By the way, if my house is on fire, don't even bother. These four women (or most guys for that matter) couldn't carry my fat ass out if their lives depended on it.
For one shift, the changing face of Buffalo firefighting

The Blogger will not be silenced by threats

Liberty may be endangered by the abuse of liberty, but also by the abuse of power.
-James Madison

From what I'm told, some members of law enforcement were not happy with one of my recent posts. A member of one of the campaigns for South District Council sent me a picture of a police cruiser parked in front of the Blackthorn at the same time Christopher Scanlon was having one of his fundraisers. The source was upset and said he didn't think it was right for a police officer, while on duty, to attend a political event.

To me, this was a minor story. I don't care what people do as long as it doesn't affect my life. My goal was not to get anyone in trouble, but highlight the fact that Chris Scanlon is the candidate of the status quo establishment. While I'm supporting A.J. Verel, I've actually been too busy lately to get involved in the race.  So I was very surprised to hear from a credible source that members of the A District were looking to throw me in the Erie County Holding Center on made up charges. Apparently, it is against the law to charge someone with 1st degree blogging, so the charges would have to be trumped up. I was even told that the plan was to arrest me on a Friday, so I'd have to spend the whole weekend behind bars.  I find it very troubling that anyone would think they could get away with such a thing. I read the story last week about the man allegedly thrown down a flight of stairs while handcuffed. I chose not to print it because there was no proof that it happened and the man in question is a convicted murderer. Out of respect for law enforcement, I decided to give the police officer in question the benefit of the doubt. However, when I hear that certain police officers would entertain the thought of making up charges against a law abiding city resident, it makes me wonder.

In any event, I've communicated to the South District Police Chief, through a good friend of mine. I've also spoken to my attorney, who happens to specialize in civil rights. He encouraged me to make this post today, in case the people in question decide to follow through on their threat. I've never been arrested for anything and the only weapon I carry around is my IPad.

Ironically, I'm not a protester or one of those people who think all cops are no good. I have several friends who are police officers and I've never had a problem with any of them. It always annoys me when protesters fight with the police when they are there protesting some bigger power. I guess to them, the police symbolize authority.

Dumb and dumber: Tim Hortons vs The Professor

In a race being closely observed by MENSA, two mental midgets are challenging each other for New York State Senator. "The Professor", Betty Jean Grant will be going up against Tim "Hortons" Kennedy. These two candidates might possibly have the lowest combined IQ of any two WNY politicians, and that's no small feat.

Grant fired the first shot on Wednesday, reminding Democratic voters how Kennedy, while on the Erie County Legislature, jumped ship (after Brian Higgins told him to) and aligned himself with the voting block of the Republicans and Chris Collins...

Grant accused Kennedy of colluding with former Republican County Executive Chris Collins to weaken the Democratic majority in the County Legislature while Kennedy served on that legislative body less than two years ago.

“Mr. Kennedy is a Chris Collins Democrat. ... He helped give part of the Democratic majority [in the County Legislature] over to a Republican county administration that had no need for the services that I just named,” she said.

If the local unions hope to gain any sort of respect and credibility, they will come out against Kennedy. A few months ago, a bus load of union workers went to Albany to meet with little Timmy before an important vote. Kennedy, left his office and had an intern greet them, before abstaining on the vote. At the time, labor was furious, vowing to remember this act of cowardice and betrayal come election time. Couple this along with Kennedy's support of Collins, the most anti-union lawmaker in recent history, and this should spell a loss of union support for Brian Higgins' little pool boy.

I view this election as a litmus test for South Buffalo's union members. They were vowing revenge on Kennedy last year, when he avoided them in Albany and refused to even meet with them. If Kennedy gets 80 or 90% of the South Buffalo vote, the unions are basically letting him get away with it. Kennedy has proven twice in recent years that he cannot be trusted and is no friend of labor. Here is the union's chance to flex their muscles and show future politicians they mean what they say. Anyone can go out to the bars and talk tough, fellas. Here's your opportunity. Get on the phones and send this known hack crying into Brian Higgins' arms.

Urban legend: the Red Dye

Growing up, everyone knew someone who had a friend whose brother witnessed the red dye. That would be the red dye that surrounded the person who urinated in the pool. Nobody ever actually witnessed it because it didn't (and doesn't) exist. In this short segment, pool workers talk about how often this mythical product comes up in their daily work lives. One guy says not a month goes by during the summer when someone doesn't call and inquire about it...

Buffalo News' piece on residency

The Buffalo News conducted a study of Buffalo Police Officers and their residency. What they found was not a surprise to anybody...

-With some 3,000 city workers, Buffalo's total payroll in 2011 was $183 million. Almost 30 percent of the employees lived in the suburbs, taking with them about 40 percent of city salaries - or $73 million - a Buffalo News analysis found. The biggest chunk of that money - $41 million - was paid to Buffalo police officers.

-While the median income of all city employees living in Buffalo is $45,000, the median income of police officers living outside of Buffalo is about $86,000 - more in line with median household incomes of Clarence ($83,281) and Orchard Park ($73,917) than Buffalo's $30,043.

The average person finds the practice of "pension padding" repulsive. The people at the top should look at what is happening in other areas of the country with entire municipalities declaring bankruptcy. It's only a matter of time before it happens here. Nonsense like this will only last so long.

Interesting, that Amherst is able to force their newly hired town workers to live in Amherst, but Buffalo cannot. I think the gap in pay between Buffalo Police Officers and the citizens they serve is one day going to explode. The people I know could care less who lives on our street. But, if you don't live on our street, please remember you are a guest. Some very interesting comments underneath the Buffalo News piece.

Please take part in my poll on the right sidebar of this page: Do you think Buffalo Police and Firefighters should live in Buffalo?

Mayor Brown announces new gun sellback program

(Pictured here are some of the guns turned in at last year's gun buyback program in Buffalo.)

With  the great success of recent gun buyback programs, Mayor Urkel has decided to offer a gun sellback initiative. Gang members, thugs, and disgruntled wives are invited to stop by city hall this Friday from 11AM-2PM to purchase new and "gently used" firearms.

Uzi's, AK 47s, and squirt guns will be on sale. There will be no questions asked and no identification required. The first 200 gun buyers showing up will receive a commemorative ankle bracelet signed by Byron Brown, Jr. There isn't enough violence in this city. We thought "Midnight basketball" would be the answer, but it didn't quite end poverty like we had hoped.

Chippewa was a great destination in the 90s, but when it became violent in recent years, that's when people really started having a good time. Thursday in the Square was fun. But it became more fun the last couple years when people stopped going out of fear of being mugged. Now, the Square is squareless and organizers have fled to the Harbor.

Come on, Dan Derenda. We all know Urkel is useless, but can't you explain to him that programs such as this are a complete waste of money?

Silver proposes college aid to illegal immigrants

So, when did New York State Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver start sniffing glue? When I first read about his plan to give illegal immigrants government financial aid for college tuition, I thought it had to be a misprint. In fact, I had to read it twice to make sure it wasn't...

ALBANY - Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants would become eligible to receive government financial aid to attend college in New York under a bill that Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver introduced Friday.

"My parents came here as immigrants, and I was able to have opportunities precisely because this country welcomed my family and allowed us to work hard and succeed," Silver, D-Manhattan, said Friday.

There is a huge difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. At the same time Silver is proposing giving illegal immigrants financial aid, TAP funding for graduate students, born in this country, is being eliminated. I notice Silver didn't have much to say about that.

Taxpayers will see right through this nonsense. Clearly, Silver and the Assembly Democrats will benefit politically from the influx of illegal residents moving here. And of course, they'll be Silver supporters. Wouldn't you support a guy who just gave you thousands of dollars of other peoples' money? Unbelievable.

I have nothing against legal immigrants. We are all descendants of legal immigrants. And I'm not saying immigrants are bad people. Chicago has many Mexican immigrants and they are some of the nicest people you could hope to meet. But seriously. This bill is only going to give more illegal immigrants an incentive to come to New York.

Will Mickey "King of all Studies" Kearns and Dim Kennedy support Silver's crazy bill? Mickey campaigned as the maverick who would stand up to Albany. Well, since he had lunch with Silver a few months ago at a fancy Albany restaurant, Mickey hasn't been doing as much "standing up".  We know "11,000 Doors" Fahey would have gone along with it. We expect Kennedy to do whatever Brian Higgins tells him to do. But Kearns? Will he be holding a press conference tomorrow announcing his opposition to this plan? Highly doubtful. We will be keeping an eye on this, the 45% toll hike proposed for truckers, and the raise the state lawmakers are trying to give themselves. Voting Yes to any of these three things is another reason for New Yorkers to flee the state.

*(Just so you don't think I'm making this up, please read the following article)...

Weasel alert: Wisconsin VP candidate Paul Ryan

I don't know about you, but Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan gives me a major case of the creeps. He reminds me of the boss who takes himself way too seriously. You know, the guy who tells you, "we're going to need you to come in on Saturday." He will do or say anything to make himself look good.

Fortunately, the reaction to Ryan from most of America has been similar to mine. Nobody likes a weasel, and you can tell Ryan oozes weaselness. He is about as status quo as one can get, yet he tries to sell himself off as a crusader. Just this week, Ryan, in a pathetic attempt to align himself with young voters, announced that he was a huge fan of the band Rage Against the Machine. In very short time, the band's guitarist made it perfectly clear, they were no fans of his...

In a blistering op-ed published Thursday night on Rolling Stone's website, Tom Morello blasts Mitt Romney's new VP choice as "the emobodiment of the machine our music rages against"

At the heart of Morello's distaste for Ryan is "his guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent." He goes on to say Ryan has plenty of "rage," but claims its "A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment."

This Ryan character reminds me of Anthony Weiner, Chris Lee, and Elliott Spitzer all put together, and it would not surprise me to find out he has an equal amount of skeletons in his closet. Total tool. Across the Midwest right now, you can almost hear the high priced hookers saying, "that guy looks familiar." Ryan reminds me of Greg Marmalard from Animal House, the prototypical privileged frat boy. Where is John Belushi when you need him?

Out of Africa

A man is swimming in a backyard pool in Africa (I didn't know they had backyards in Africa), and a wild elephant stops by for a drink. He must not have liked the taste of chlorine as he didn't stick around too long...

Dollar Tree Bandit

I ran into my friend Jack from Seneca Street last night at a local lawn fete. He had a bizarre story to tell and asked me to share it with the six people who read this blog.

Jack, was shopping at the Aldi store recently when he inadvertently dropped his wallet. Realizing he had misplaced it, he called the store and asked them if anyone had returned it. The store had not seen it, and Jack assumed it would be the end of the story (and his wallet).

A couple days later, the store manager called Jack and told him they were going over surveillance camera footage and spotted the theft. A woman, about 4 1/2 feet tall, was seen on the tape looking around before placing the wallet in her purse. Making matters worse, she was shopping with a young child (who witnessed this terrible behavior and probably thinks stealing is an acceptable practice.) Jack or the store manager, I'm not sure who, recognized the thief as the manager of the Dollar Tree store in the old Ames Plaza (behind Burger King) on Seneca Street. When the West Seneca police contacted the woman, she denied everything. She said she had found the wallet and tried to return it to it's owner. I guess it never occurred to her to give it to the store manager at the Aldi store, like any honest citizen would.

In any event, Jack did receive his wallet in the mail (minus the cash that had been inside it) a few days later. The woman must have mailed it back as soon as she knew the police were involved. What the mystery woman didn't know was that Jack is a friend of the Blogger. It would really be nice if this story got back to her, and she returned Jack's money. If you do shop at this Dollar Tree, count your change twice and don't leave anything lying around when this woman is working. Obviously, she will steal if given the opportunity.

On a side note, Jack and his wife are such nice people, they don't want the woman fired from the Dollar Tree. They fee taking away her livelihood would not benefit anyone. They simply want her to do the right thing and return the cash. Perhaps the Dollar Tree upper echelon will give her the "encouragement" she needs.

Rough night

It's never a good thing when you get pulled over for DUI while completely naked and holding a laptop. Probably even worse if you're a Catholic priest...

Rev. Peter Petroske, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, was arrested late Thursday night, according to the Detroit News, and faces charges of disorderly/obscene conduct and operating while intoxicated.

When he was arrested, Petroske was alone in the vehicle with a laptop, according to the Detroit Free Press.

What's all the fuss about? The same thing happened to me the other night. The report doesn't say what website he was looking at, but I'd say it's a pretty safe bet it wasn't Mapquest.
