Slap in the face
I received a couple of calls yesterday asking me if I had seen who Mickey Kearns had listed as one of his witnesses on his designating petitions. None other than political opportunist Ray McGurn, keeper of the status quo.
Mickey likes to model himself after the career of Jimmy Griffin. Say what you want about Griffin: He ran away from the party hacks like the plague. Didn't want anything to do with them. In fact, if Griffin were alive today, I have a feeling he'd be calling Kearns this morning asking him what the hell was wrong with him.
I don't know who is making Mickey's decisions for him these days, but he is clearly in need of a new consigliere. The voters of the district have had enough of the likes of McGurn, the Circle Lady, Rick Finnigan, etc. When they see people like these supporting specific candidates, they run the other way.
I can think of many civic minded residents who would have made much better witnesses than McGurn. (Mark Rogowski, Rick Hall, and Kevin Comerford to name a few). When Kearns first ran for Council, the only one who would nominate him for the position was Committeeman Tim Green (South 25). Where was Ray McGurn? He was buttering up to the party/Brian Higgins' choice, Jeff Conrad. Why? Because that's what career opportunists like McGurn do.
Either Kearns is a very astute politician or he is running the risk of alienating the people who got him where he is today. Is it worth that much to Kearns to be announced at the Going' South Irish Festival? Many people are questioning the direction Kearns is heading towards these days.
