Be careful what you wish for

You have to love when a guy lobbies Albany to create a new law and then is one of the first people arrested and charged with breaking his own law. It must feel like when you step on a metal rake and the wooden end pops up and hits you in the face...

  Dwayne Ferguson was among local activists who stood with Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes last year lobbying for a law that would make possessing a gun on school property a felony. Prior to New York State’s adoption of the SAFE Act last year, in response to the Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut, it was a long-established state law that guns could not be brought onto school property. The only difference was that the crime carried less punishment as a misdemeanor.

In an ironic turn of events, Ferguson was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon under that law for Thursday’s incident. The law carries a maximum sentence of up to four years in state prison.  

In fairness to Ferguson, he has a valid permit for the gun and I don't believe he had any malicious intent. Someone, probably a political foe, knew he carried a weapon and "dropped a dime" on him. I don't think what he did warrants a felony, but that will be up to Judge Wapner to decide.

Erie County voters are not this stupid

When I read Bob McCarthy's political column today, I couldn't believe my eyes...

Have you heard the one about State Sen. Tim Kennedy running for county comptroller this year? Not true.

But a tad of logic made this rumor almost logical. Kennedy barely survived a primary challenge from County Legislature Chairwoman Betty Jean Grant last fall, spending about $400,000 to win by a handful of votes. Grant almost knocked him off with $20,000.

Most people in WNY are onto Kennedy's pathetic act. They've been informed by myself and others about his limited intelligence and selfish nature. He'll never get elected to anything again once he is removed from Albany in the next election. He's damaged goods. Everyone knows this. He's made so many enemies throughout the district. The News writes it off to "demographics." What they really mean is there are many more black people in his district than in years past. However, what McCarthy and others might not know is that Kennedy is despised by many white South Buffalo voters, also. The only supporters he has left are a select group of very dumb people from the neighborhood clique. The people who owe their jobs to Brian Higgins. The people who do whatever they are told to by Brian Higgins. The people with limited intelligence/self respect. There's one on every street.

I'm hoping local developer Carl Paladino uses his financial muscle to help send Kennedy packing in 2014. Paladino recently called Kennedy and Mark Grisanti "cowards" for their gun control vote last week. More upsetting than the actual vote, many residents were unhappy with the way it was pushed through hastily without any debate or public input.

Kennedy will do whatever he is told by Brian Higgins and Andrew Cuomo. He doesn't stand for anything. His constituents are well aware of this and will be much more organized in getting rid of him this time. Prediction: Kennedy will be given a much deserved demotion-cleaning the floors at the local Walmart.

Cuomo's new gun laws

Governor Cuomo's gun control legislation comes as a surprise to me. With his Presidential aspirations, I would have expected him to start leaning towards the right on the political spectrum. This Bill is sure to generate controversy, especially in the gun-loving South.

Assemblyman Mickey Paladino voted against it, which is no surprise. He is bought and paid for by the ultra Conservative Carl Paladino.

Senator Tim "Hortons" Kennedy voted in favor of it, which is also no surprise. He does whatever he is told to by liberals Brian Higgins and Governor Cuomo. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I have a feeling the gun rights advocates will have their sights (no pun intended) set on the round mound of legislation when he's up for reelection in a few years.

Trust me when I tell you neither Kearns nor Kennedy vote their conscience on anything. They simply go along with the people pulling their strings.

Have you seen some of the pro gun people they've been putting on some of these talk shows lately? It seems as though the Left portion of our media is purposely bypassing the responsible gun owners in favor of the lunatic fringe. It is actually a brilliant tactic on their part. Alex Jones, the radio talk show host calling for the deportation of Piers Morgan, is the poster child for the wackjobs. He seems more intent on promoting his book than on discussing the issue of gun control.

I'm in favor of gun control, but even I am not naive enough to think guys like Jones represent the true gun owners of America. At least, I hope not. Where did they find this cartoon character, anyway? Have you caught his act yet? In case you missed it, here he is on Morgan's show making a complete fool out of himself...

I make no secret of the fact that I favor increased gun control laws in this country. However, I couldn't agree more with the NRA's response to the celebrities who came out with their anti gun Demand a Plan commercial in response to the Connecticut shooting. Too many guns

Not sure what to think about the mass shootings going on. I know I'll lose some 2nd Amendment loving friends on this, but I think some form of gun control is inevitable.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. However, the events in Connecticut and Rochester, New York this past week underscore the fact that too many of the wrong people possess weapons in this country. The NRA's call to arm more people (including teachers) is not the answer. Can you imagine your 5th grade teacher in possession of a firearm? If we brought guns into our schools, how long would it be before we had our first accidental shooting? "Oh, sorry about that Mr. Lunch Deliveryman. I thought you were an antisocial personality entering our school. I didn't mean to blow your head off."

There's no doubt about it. We live in a culture of violence here in America. I don't blame video games or movies. People all over the world watch the same movies and play the same video games we do. It is internal. The people committing these heinous crimes are at the extreme end of this mentality.

Although not a hunter, I'm not against hunters legally possessing hunting rifles (although I think the animals should be given them as well). George Carlin said , "Hunting is the only sport where one side doesn't even know they're in the game." I believe there should be a ban on assault weapons. I believe we need to look more closely at the way we treat the mentally ill. Finally, I believe we need to take a serious look at ourselves and ask why so many people in this country possess this rage.

OK. This might be the most poorly written post of the last three years, but what do you expect? It's 5:29 in the morning and I'm at the end of a very long shift. Peace.

Bad Timing Award

We have to give this guy our Bad Timing Award. Howard Slaughter of Buffalo's East side was proposing selling legal guns out of his Adams Street home. In the midst of the debate, the nation suffered arguably it's worst gun tragedy ever, as 20 six and seven year olds were gunned down by a crazed lunatic in Newtown, Connecticut.

I feel for people on both sides of the gun control debate. They are forced to rely on politicians to decide this important issue. Most of these officials are rock stupid, know nothing about guns, and wouldn't know who to get sound advice from on any issue. Some of the most unstable people you will ever meet. If any changes are to be made, they'll have to come from the American people themselves and not the people in Washington grabbing other guys' legs inside airport rest room stalls.

Not sure what led the Connecticut school killer to commit his heinous act. I'm sure it will reinvigorate the gun control debate in this country. How we treat mental illness will also be debated in the wake of this tragedy, for sure. We're also hearing the shooter had autism. When the media incorrectly reported his brother as the shooter, neighbors realized the mistake right away and knew he had to be the gunman. In other words, he was known to be the strange one.

Autism seems to take on many forms. I worked with an autistic person a few years ago. The young man was a brilliant musician who was obsessed with computers. In fact, his job was to design websites. He was a savant with very few, if any friends. I remember him living with a roommate who had a bird in their apartment. At one of his meetings, he said the bird was making too much noise and he was thinking about cooking it and eating it one night. He said this, as if it were a perfectly normal response to the bird being a bit noisy.

From everything I'm hearing about the Connecticut school shooter, he was socially awkward. He had no Senior HS picture. It just said camera shy under his name. (Come to think of it, so did mine, but that's another story). His parents were divorced and he seemed to have pent up rage and resentment towards them, as evidenced by him shooting his mother before going to the school.

In any event, it seems as though the Canadian band Rush predicted the potential for people like this. Alienation can lead to despair. And let's face it, we live in a very violent society. South Park Hall of Fame- Nigel Bostic

 
South Park High School recently announced their first athletic Hall of Fame class. I found it interesting that they left out Nigel Bostic, probably the greatest athlete to attend the school over the last 30 years. Bostic literally looked and played like a man against boys in both football and basketball. I believe Bostic went to Nebraska to play football, before being asked nicely to leave the state. He ended up at UB, where credit card theft ended his football there. And after his college career ended, Bostic distinguished himself in the business world. From today's Buffalo News...

The gun used to shoot Williams was among some 250 purchased at Ohio gun shows by gun trafficker James Nigel Bostic, formerly of Buffalo, who sold many of the cheap handguns on the streets of Buffalo.

I can't believe after all these years, nothing has really been done to halt the violence on the streets in urban areas. The last few months it seems like someone has been shot dead on a nightly basis on the East side. Could you imagine waking up daily to find out which young person from South Buffalo had been shot the night before? Yet, nothing ever seems to change. 

It seems to me that, if the powers-that-be wanted to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands, they could. This widespread violence does not happen in most other countries. Sadly, I don't think either Mitt or Barack have the answers,or the will, to change anything.

Strange sequence of events

A Utah man sees a mouse run across his kitchen floor. So he does what anyone would do in a similar situation. He pulls out a 9mm handgun and tries to shoot it. You guessed it. He missed. The bullet then went through a wall and struck his 28 year old roommate in the chest.

The story just gets weird from there. Police arrived on the scene and found a 13 year old girl hiding in a closet. She claimed to be the girlfriend of a 3rd roommate, 34 year old Paul Kunzler. Kunzy was charged with statutory rape. Surprisingly, police say alcohol may have played a role in the initial shooting incident...

During an ensuing search of the house, officers found a 13-year-old girl hiding in a basement closet, Wyant said. The girl told police she had sneaked out of her house without her father's knowledge to see Kunzler, according to a jail report.

After further questioning, investigators learned Kunzler and the 13-year-old had been having a relationship for four months. The two had met through a common friend, Wyant said.

Loaded gun found at Riverside HS-Again

Authorities found a student in possession of a loaded handgun at Riverside High School on Friday. It was last February when another gun was found at the school.

Remember, Riverside was one of the three lower performing schools forced to inexplicably change principals last year, in order to remain eligible for a state grant.

From today's Buffalo News, here's an update on how that great plan is working out...

At Riverside, teachers who requested anonymity said they think discipline in the school has gotten lax in the past year or so.

“All the administrators at our school are not tenured. They are afraid to do anything,” one teacher said. “We have no detention anymore. Really, there are students roaming the halls everywhere. Students are allowed to come late to class. There might be 40 students in the hallway. In my opinion, if you let the little things get out of control, then the big things happen.”

As I said a year ago, Riverside's problems were not caused by the principal or the teachers. Mike Mogavero was a very good principal, in my opinion. People can only do so much with what they have to work with. Did the suits in Albany think a new principal would result in gang affiliated students from broken homes all of a sudden getting accepted into Harvard?

At the end of the day, it starts with responsible families. As a sub, I see it every day from Kindergarten through high school. The students in many of the schools are not taught the value of an education at home and come to school unprepared. Unfortunately, the first time they are faced with any real consequences for their choices is when they are sentenced to prison. It's not the schools causing the problems. It's the parents of many (not all) of these students and the students themselves. You can't force people to value education.

Bring Your Gun to School Day at Riverside

An 18 year old Sophomore (high achieving by Buffalo school standards) was found to have a loaded gun in his locker today at the Riverside School of Excellence High School...

Dr. Williams has the whole situation under control. He's going to treat the youth to a free meal at The Buffalo Chophouse (just like he did a few years back with the Performing Arts' students who attacked their teacher.)

The No Child Left Behind Act is really quite ridiculous. It might be time to start leaving a few of them behind. Then, the rest will learn from them and not be brought down to their level. Disrespect and lack of discipline are the two biggest problems facing the Buffalo Public School system today. Someone told me today, in Israel, if a student is disrespectful in school, they send them to jail. Here, they tell them about all their rights and give them a three day vacation.

I do feel bad that an 18 year old is a Sophomore and feels so unsafe that he has to carry a gun with him to school. However, I feel worse for the 15 year old girl who has to sit next to him in class. It's no wonder people can't wait to move their families out of the city. Things would change if we had more teachers like the guy in this clip...

Arizona shooting

The tragic shooting in Arizona was the act of an unstable person. There is no room on either side of the aisle for violence. Some people are attempting to politicize the incident, which is unfortunate. I feel this is another example of guns getting into the hands of the wrong people. The big question we should be asking is how someone so unstable got his hands on an automatic weapon in the first place...

Christmas mayhem

A masked gunman robs a bank. A customer follows him out of the bank and fires 4-6 shots at him with his gun. The whole thing is witnessed by a creepy looking man, who doubles as an Eastern Hills Mall's Santa Claus. No, this is not the script of an old Richard Pryor movie. It actually happened today out in Amherst.

Truck dealer gives away AK-47s

A truck dealer is giving away free AK-47s with the purchase of a new truck. And what a shocker. It's taking place in Florida, the state where all wackjobs seem to gravitate towards. It amounts to little more than a free national commercial for the dealer. Every national news outfit (and even some fringe bloggers) are taking his bait.

I'm all for guns for hunting purposes and I believe in the 2nd Amendment. However, a semi-assault weapon to protect yourself? When are our leaders going to make these types of guns illegal? I think our society needs to use common sense and draw the line somewhere.

The reporter asks the truck dealer, "What would Jesus do? Would he have carried a gun? The dealer says, "No. They didn't have guns back then." I have to admit, that was a great response...

City Grill Shooting

Four peoples' lives were tragically cut short because one gang member decided to open fire on Saturday night outside the City Grill Restaurant on Main St. Criminals in this country have access to guns because it is not a priority to take these guns away from them. They would still fight (with knives or their fists), but these deadly shootings would be eliminated if the government chose to make this a priority. It seems to me there should be stiffer penalties given to people convicted of supplying guns to the wrong hands. Kids have guns. Gang members have guns. Who is supplying them? It is way too easy to get a handgun in this country. You mix drugs, gangs, and easy access to guns and this is the result...

The University of Buffalo uncovered surveillance footage yesterday of a man they say could have been the mysterious gunman reportedly seen walking into a library last semester. Previously, there were no reported images of him published. If you see this man buying overpriced food at the Commons or taking a cab to get from his parking spot to class, please contact campus police immediately. (If they're not too busy writing hundreds of parking tickets, they might respond...

BB Gun shooting on Seneca St.

Terrible story from today's Buffalo News. I'm not sure from the article whether the shooting victim knew the shooter or if it was just a random act of stupidity. All you have to do is read this blog's crime reports each week to see there are certain problem streets in South Buffalo. The same streets show up over and over again each week. I just hope they catch whoever did this and throw the book at him...

Victim loses eye in BB gun shooting
A Zittel Street man lost an eye Friday after he was shot with a BB gun in South Buffalo.
Joseph Ray was hit in the left eye at about 5:20 p. m. in a parking lot at 2186 Seneca St., near Cazenovia Street, Buffalo police said.
He was taken to Erie County Medical Center.
The shooter was not known.

No gunman found at UB

A surveillance camera allegedly caught someone trying to enter UB's Lockwood Library with a gun this afternoon. Officials said they checked every room and found nothing. Campus police are being tight lipped about the incident but my sources have obtained this picture of somebody they are labeling as a "person of interest"...
