South Park Hall of Fame- Nigel Bostic

 
South Park High School recently announced their first athletic Hall of Fame class. I found it interesting that they left out Nigel Bostic, probably the greatest athlete to attend the school over the last 30 years. Bostic literally looked and played like a man against boys in both football and basketball. I believe Bostic went to Nebraska to play football, before being asked nicely to leave the state. He ended up at UB, where credit card theft ended his football there. And after his college career ended, Bostic distinguished himself in the business world. From today's Buffalo News...

The gun used to shoot Williams was among some 250 purchased at Ohio gun shows by gun trafficker James Nigel Bostic, formerly of Buffalo, who sold many of the cheap handguns on the streets of Buffalo.

I can't believe after all these years, nothing has really been done to halt the violence on the streets in urban areas. The last few months it seems like someone has been shot dead on a nightly basis on the East side. Could you imagine waking up daily to find out which young person from South Buffalo had been shot the night before? Yet, nothing ever seems to change. 

It seems to me that, if the powers-that-be wanted to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands, they could. This widespread violence does not happen in most other countries. Sadly, I don't think either Mitt or Barack have the answers,or the will, to change anything.

Taylor Park grass saga

Some local residents called channel 2 after the city of Buffalo and the South Park High School custodial crew couldn't decide who was responsible for cutting the grass behind the neighbors' yards (which had grown three feet high). Perhaps Buffalo school officials wanted to hide under the grass after hearing that South Park was recently ranked 127th out of 133 WNY schools in Business First' annual rankings. The Blogger always has the statistics.

The guy at the 1:00 mark is hysterical as he rattles off all the numbers he called and the huge runaround each one gave him. Here is an article about a school district in Pennsylvania that is using sheep to cut their grass.

That's a great idea. Perhaps school officials can call the Democratic Committeemen of South Buffalo to cut the grass. Everyone knows what sheep they are. Those gutless losers will do whatever they're told. They have no pride or self respect. Everyone knows this...

Another day at South Park

South Park High School has apparently added mixed martial arts to it's list of 2011 Spring varsity sports. Looks like Superintendent Williams will be taking another student out to dinner at the Buffalo Chophouse soon...

South Park student charged with assaults

A student at South Park High School was arrested Monday for allegedly assaulting another student and the school’s assistant principal, Buffalo police said.

The 16-year-old jumped from her seat on the third floor of the high school, knocking Assistant Principal Orniece Hill out of her chair, police said. Hill suffered injuries to her hips and right arm.

After knocking Hill our of her chair, the student punched and pulled the hair of another student, police said. The student is charged with second-degree assault and harassment.

Will the parent of the arrested teen sue the assistant principal? After all, her daughter may have injured her elbow while jumping out of her chair to assault her...

South Park community high school debated

Councilmember Kearns drew a harsh response from Buffalo School Board members when he suggested new students to South Park High School take an entrance exam or get there straight from the successful South Buffalo Discovery School. From The Buffalo News...

Some board members bristled when Kearns turned the discussion specifically to South Park High School, which has been identified by the state as persistently low-achieving. He said that it should be changed into a school that students have to test into, or it should become a school that serves graduates of Discovery School in South Buffalo.

“You need the change in South Buffalo. What about the rest of the city?” board member Mary Ruth Kapsiak, who represents the Central District, said to Kearns. “You’re talking about the bottom-tier five [high schools]. You’re addressing one. What about the others?”

Florence D. Johnson, an at-large member of the board, also spoke passionately on behalf of struggling schools in areas of the city that are predominantly minority. If South Park becomes a school that serves its South Buffalo constituents — who are predominantly white — then other schools will become less racially balanced than they are now, she said.

“If we have one school that is majority children and majority race, what is going to happen to [schools in predominantly minority parts of the city]?” she asked.

I can't believe how distorted things have become. We have someone calling for a school to return to it's neighborhood roots. God forbid, a school trying to have community ties anymore. The current result is a school where people come from all over and their is no sense of community. How many times have you heard old timers talk about how great of a school South Park "used to be"? I wonder how many South Buffalo residents have fled to the suburbs over the past few decades, so their kids could get a decent education.

Busing was a noble experiment that failed miserably. Here's an interesting concept. How about holding families in all neighborhoods accountable for their kids at school? Regardless of their skin color, start creating some academic and behavioral expectations for all students when they enter Kindergarten. I'd love to see South Park become a community high school. Then, despite the fact that he remained silent throughout the whole discussion and never challenged Kapsiak or Johnson, Lou "Pinocchio" Petrucci can stand up and say it was his idea all along. You know he will. That's what self promoters do.

Grover stands behind excellent soccer coach

On behalf of the athletes, administrators, faculty and staff at the International Preparatory School at Grover, School 198, we would like to clarify an article in the Sept. 29 News. This article reflected badly on our school due to an interview conducted with a former faculty member of our physical education department.

The current boys’ varsity soccer coach, Ahmed Omerhodzic, was portrayed as being incompetent. The truth is that he is an exceptional coach who was forced to start late in the season. Late teacher placements and an abnormal number of layoffs/retirements in our district this past year caused this late start. Judging from the interview in The News, it seems our former boys’ varsity soccer coach holds ill feelings about his departure from IPREP at Grover and found some consolation in airing his personal opinions. Unfortunately, he has put his own feelings above the happiness and well-being of the very students he coached.

Kevin Eberle, principal of IPREP at Grover, should be commended for his commitment to the students and staff of his school, which was portrayed in a negative way. He believes that all students— despite hardships, less-than-ideal backgrounds and setbacks—can succeed with the intervention of positive influences within the school community. We, the faculty, staff and students at IPREP at Grover, applaud Eberle’s devotion and commitment to academics, athletics and overall success for students.

Our boys’ soccer team refuses to be set back because of the slanted opinion of others. The boys are confident that their “Cinderella” story will continue, despite naysayers, under a new “architect” and the constant support of a caring school community within IPREP at Grover.

I read the article in question and I felt sorry for the new coach. The kids from Grover come from many soccer-playing nations. They play almost every day in the summer on their own at Lasalle Park. While I give last year's coach (Telly Forcucci) credit for keeping them focused and organized, I'll be on record as saying, I doubt if any of the players learned any soccer skills from him last year. I don't know him. He could be a great guy but I'm told his background is in hockey. I'd be willing to bet that every one of his starters knew more about the game than he did last year.

We'll find out soon enough. Forcucci is coaching the South Park girls soccer team this year. South Park's roster is not loaded with foreign students who already know how to play the game. This will be a more accurate test of his coaching abilities. We will be reporting on how they do against perennial powers City Honors, Hutch Tech, and Da Vinci. The team has rarely beaten these three schools in the past. I saw Hutch Tech's and Da Vinci's girls the last two summers in our South Buffalo summer leagues (their coaches signed them up as a group). A few of our travel players are also playing at those schools. I know City Honors' players mostly come from the Delaware Soccer Club.It will be interesting to see how South Park does, now that they have this world class coaching staff leading them. We'll see.

Timon/South Park update

Timon/South Park Brawl

I missed the big brawl at the Timon-South Park football game last night. I heard Tiger and Sparky the mascot were even throwing punches. I was invited to the game by friends but I chose not to go. It's too bad because I would have had my video camera rolling for sure. But I actually don't regret my decision not to go. I just can't stomach all the back-patting on the sidelines by unimportant people trying to be seen. Hey, I got three pensions. How many do you have? What number are you on this list? My kid should be playing more. What the hell do these coaches know? Some of these people think they're in Hollywood, instead of a small town in Upstate New York. From the Metro Community News...

There was talk all week that this game was going to get out of hand. Things really heated up toward the end of the week with some incidents happening at both schools on Thursday night. Some will say they can see it just because the schools are so close to each other. The kids know each other and some kids who started their high school careers at Timon are now at South Park.

After the play had ended a South Park player kicked the head of a Timon player, which then started a bench clearing brawl. Coaches tried to get their players under control as the cops ran onto the field to try and break up what was going on.

It was an ugly display of sportsmanship by South Park as they were losing the game. Some could say that Timon should have kept their cool – since they were winning the game anyways.

Nothing like "unbiased journalism" from the Timon graduate who wrote this piece. Seriously, this kid graduated from there, like three years ago. Personally, I love brawls. If it was started by a few kids who had been kicked out of Timon, then I actually think it's kind of funny. I've heard a lot of different stories so far.

First, I heard some South Park students vandalized Bishop Timon on Thursday night. I talked to someone close to a Buffalo Police officer who was at the scene. He said it was just something minor written on the grass at the school. He said no charges were filed because it was just a harmless prank associated with the rivalry.

Now, I'm hearing some Bishop Timon parents showed up drunk to the game. Nothing like setting a good example to your kids. I also heard a South Park player missed a tackle and kicked the ground out of frustration. I'm not sure if he accidentally kicked a Timon player or if it was on purpose. Anyway, I'm sure there was trash talking that preceded the fight. The refs probably could have prevented things from escalating. They should use videotape and identify any parents that stormed the field. That is ridiculous.

From what I understand there is a non-league chess match scheduled for next week between the same two schools at Bishop Timon. Extra security guards from the Galleria Mall will be brought in. They will be checking spectators at the door to make sure they don't use their pocket protectors as weapons. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure..
