One-legged wrestler

Arizona State's Anthony Robles proves it's not what you're given but how you use what you're given. Robles won the NCAA 125 lb. championship a few weeks ago despite being born with only one leg...

Letters to the editor: downsizing

I agree with this letter writer from West Seneca about the need for Western New York to have significantly less politicians "representing" us...

Too many politicians for falling population
Reading The News coverage of the recent census figures has been frustrating in more ways than one. Not only have local leaders failed to stop Erie County’s population loss, they have failed while someone like Kevin Gaughan has been offering ways to reverse our decline. We’ve all become familiar with Gaughan’s research that shows Western New York has a bloated number of elected officials. His statistics would be eye-opening even if we were a growing area. But in the last decade, Erie County lost more people than any other county in New York State. Yet we still have an overload of politicians. Gaughan’s solution of streamlining local governments and the State Legislature is right. His downsizing successes have saved local taxpayers money, and if he can do the same thing with the Legislature, we’ll all benefit. There are areas all over America that face the same difficulties of climate and geography that we do. But they’re growing while we’re dying. The only difference is that those successful areas don’t bear the cost of multiple governments, and the large number of politicians that come with them. Karen Ryan West Seneca

When you hear these political types talking about the potential to lose "representation" it is laughable. In fact, the only people speaking out for more of these clowns are the clowns themselves, their staff members, and the respective family members. Why would they want to get rid of the golden goose? The rest of us aren't served by them at all.

Do you think people like Tim "Hortons" Kennedy or Tim "Einstein" Whalen significantly affect your life in any way, shape, or form? Believe me, you and I would do just fine without them. They bring less than nothing to the table. If it means getting rid of political hacks like these two, please, do us all a favor and give us less representation.

Play at the plate

Here's a cool baseball play from the state of Texas. A runner rounds third base for a play at the plate. The throw is perfect. The runner slides. The catcher goes to tag the runner, who at the last second, comes to a dead stop (mid-slide) and jumps over the tag. The umpire is in the perfect position to call him safe. As the catcher initially went to tag him, he must have wondered where he went.

Come on down

My readers might find this hard to believe but I don't smoke weed. Allah blessed me with limited brain cells as it is, so I don't have any to spare on drugs or alcohol. I do have an occasional drink, but do not touch marijuana.

In case you live under a rock, April 20th is like Christmas for potheads. For all you stoners out there: here is a guy on the Price is Right bidding $4.20 for everything...

This day would not be complete without a clip from the greatest stoner of all time, Jeff Spicoli of Ridgemont High School...

Best excuse ever

A man was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of grabbing girls after knocking them down at a roller skating party in Palm Bay.

After several parents complained to Palm Bay police, officers went to the Skate Jam and arrested Delisle. Skate Jam is a free family event that is held on the third Saturday of every month from September to May."(They) put handcuffs on him, and the whole entire crowd, everybody at the Skate Jam, was clapping and applauding the police," Clausen said.

Can you imagine if this guy was just really a lousy skater, without any deviant intentions? How would you like to be him? One minute, you're trying to hold yourself up on the railing. The next, you're being taken away in handcuffs. It's hard to believe this happened in Florida, where the people are usually so normal. The skater with the happy hands did come up with one of the funniest excuses I've heard in a long time, though...

Delisle said the children ganged up on him and made the accusations because they were jealous of his skating skills.

Women priests

A group is in town to protest the excommunication of a Catholic priest, who spoke out in favor of women becoming priests. I can't believe women are still treated like this in the church. Some of the most devout Catholics I've known have been women.

Tradition is one thing. However, one needs only to go back and read the Bible to see how much Jesus of Nazareth entrusted to the women around him. I'm a devout Jehovah's Witness, so the Catholics can do whatever they want. I understand the importance of tradition within the church but I think allowing women to become priests would be a shot in the arm after the recent sex abuse scandals...

During this holy week, I'd like to give a shout out to Judas Iscariot. A name synonymous with trust...

One man he resists
One man washed on an empty beach
One man betrayed with a kiss

The empty suit

Deputy Mayor Byron Brown's publicity stunt of the week is brought to you by Siegel, Kelleher, and Kahn (or whatever two of them are still on speaking terms). Come on, Urkel! I know you read this blog on a daily basis. As you should. With me being God's gift to the written word and all .

But come on! We're the 2nd poorest city in America. Those were 400 Western New Yorkers who lost real jobs at Quad Graphics in Depew yesterday. They'll all be leaving for the Carolina's tomorrow and you're talking about an orange free lobby in city hall. Are you serious? Show some real leadership for once in your life and do something, loser. You're tenure as mayor has been a downright embarrassing one so far...

The dangers of blogging

A woman from Staten Island won a huge settlement of $850/month for life and the couple's home after a 1997 car accident left her too injured to work...

The payday ended when Brian McGurk went back to court after spotting a blog where his ex-wife boasted of cutting a rug and dancing "everyday for three years."

"My belly dancing is the reason why I adore myself so much," Dorothy McGurk, 43, posted on the blog, including photos of herself grooving at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a new age gallery in Chelsea.

"Today I decided to dedicate myself more to my dance," she wrote. "Even though I dance everyday, it's not enough. It won't be enough until I dance for you all, until you feel my euphoria.

"Today as I danced myself silly, I lifted my head and elongated my neck as I swirled around," she wrote in another post. "And then it happened, I got really, really high."

After reading her blog posts, the judge felt the ex Mrs. McGurk was too high. He decided her belly dancing career was over and it was time to return to work. Busted...
