Harry E. Palm Sr.

Retired U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Harry Edward Palm Sr., 86, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at Stafford Hospital.

Survivors include his sons, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Harry E. Palm Jr. and his wife, Isabella, Nicholas Palm and his wife, Pam, and Mark Palm and his wife, Dorothy; his daughters, Mary Palm Morgan and her partner, Beth Fitton, and Monica Williams and her husband, Keith; his brother-in-law, Jacek Skryzalin and his wife, Kathy; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Palm.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, at St. William of York Catholic Church, with the Rev. Geronimo A. Magat officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, Box 1006, Fredericksburg, Va. 22402.

Whatever works

People are always saying you can fix anything with duct tape. However, when you duct tape your two kids, it might not be a good idea to post the pictures on a social networking site. It reminds me of the time a local guy put his kids up for sale on EBay...

PINEVILLE — Louisiana authorities have charged two mothers with using duct tape to restrain their children and cover their mouths.

The Pineville Police Department said it received information that two adult mothers were using duct tape as a restraint on their children, ages 3 to 10. The families lived in the same house. Officers said they obtained photographs posted on social networking website Facebook captioned with the phrase, "this how we take care of our kids".

Perennial candidate?

I've been listening(unfortunately)to the ads for the candidates vying for the 26th Congressional seat. Of course, they are all very predictable. First, the eerie music plays while Mr. or Ms. Serious Voice talks about what villains the two opponents are. Then, the triumphant music begins and we hear about how wonderful their candidate is. They are enough to make even the least cynical amongst us want to puke.

I heard one today for Jane Corwin. During the initial bashing, the narrator describes one of her opponents as a "perennial candidate". I'm sure they were referring to Jack Davis. Davis has run a few times unsuccessfully, however, the reason he has been unsuccessful, is because he often goes against the party machines. I'll take a guy spending his own money over someone like Corwin or Kathy Hochul (both of whom are beholden to their respective political parties.) If that's the worst thing Corwin can say about Davis(that he's run before), he must be a good candidate. The bottom line is neither Hochul or Corwin would be running, if they didn't have their party's support. That should tell you something right there about both of them. People in Western New York have had it up to here with career politicians who tow the party line (see Jim Keane). They came out in droves to support Carl Paladino in the Republican Primary last Fall, against the party backed candidate.

I don't know anything about Hochul. However, based on her latest ads, I can tell you Miss I Was Born With a Silver Spoon in my Mouth Corwin appears to be getting desperate...

Racist snob in East Amherst

This is sad. Some snob in East Amherst doesn't like the fact that a Mosque was built a few doors down from him, so he posted a racist sign. Nothing like showing the whole community how stupid you are to get your point across. It's funny. Some people say that about me. ???

Who's more likely to make a bomb?: People going to their place of worship or a lunatic angry enough to post a racist sign next to their place of worship?...

Is she serious?

I couldn't tell you anything about the three candidates vying for the Congressional seat in the 26th district. However, as quickly as Chris Lee chasing a transvestite in Washington, I can tell you Jane Corwin comes off as a liar. In her literature and fundraising documents, Corwin says she "was a successful businesswoman for 36 years before going into the Assembly in 2008". Since she was 44 in 2008, that would mean her business career started at the age of 8.

Incredibly, when questioned about this obvious exaggeration, this was Corwin's response...

Corwin, now 47, sticks by her claim, saying she's worked much of her life in her family business -- doing everything from delivering the Talking Phone Book as a child to proofreading its pages as a teenager, and from marketing it as a vice president when returning from college to making strategic decisions as secretary-treasurer of the board in subsequent years.

There you have it. Let it be known that Corwin will have no problem lying to you if elected. I'm not saying the other two candidates won't. However, she clearly has no problem insulting the intelligence of the average voter by sticking to this claim. Hilarious.

This special election doesn't interest me at all. What they should really do is get a pit of mud and let Corwin and Kathy Hochul have at it. They're both the same size and about the same age. Winner take all. Heck, I'd even say give crazy Jack Davis some viagra and let him get in there as well. He might be a guy, but his advancing age makes it a fair fight. We all know these three are liars and don't really care about the average Western New York resident. Why not at least make it entertaining for the rest of us?

New coach at Timon

Congratulations to Bishop Timon High School on the hiring of their new football coach. I hear they got a young guy who went off to Holy Cross University and really made a name for himself in their football program. What was that? They didn't hire former South Buffalo Soccer player Frank Herlihy? Oh, I'm sorry. Never mind.

Get ready for the excuses to fly. Our girls' program is one of the smallest (numbers wise) in WNY, yet our teams are all at or near the top of their leagues. Building a program takes patience, intelligence, and hard work. Which city worker is going to be the new special teams coach? 3-6. 4- 5 if they're lucky.

Keeping it in the family

Watch this clip. This young lady's parents must be so proud of her. She gave two drunk guys from Clarence a ride home from a Lockport bar. On the way home, she texted a couple of her homies. Her homies, father and son scumbags, pistol whipped and then robbed the two unsuspecting men of $500 and credit cards. We don't have enough jail cells in this country for Amber and the people she consorts with...

She was just sassing

We're finally starting to see everyday citizens pointing the finger where it belongs on the education crisis in the city of Buffalo: on the students and their parents themselves. Letters to the editor are finally being written on this subject, exposing what is really going on inside these buildings.

When cops crossed the line in Lancaster and West Seneca, I took the side of the citizens. In the case of 17 year Riverside High School student Ieshia Huffman, I have to side with the police officer. Of course, Buffalo News columnist Rod Watson doesn't see it this way. He thinks the police officer should have taken poor little Ieshia aside and given her a hug. My favorite part of these articles is when the News' writers (usually Donne Esmonde or Watson) throw in the one line grudgingly conceding the poor behavior of the students led to the problem...

No one’s pretending that cops are always dealing with Beaver Cleaver and Marcia Brady. The girl was wrong for pointing the fake rifle; ROTC should have taught her to treat every gun as if it’s loaded. She also was wrong for mouthing off and cursing instead of obeying; one would hope the program also instills more respect for authority.

But respect has to be earned.

Respect has to be earned? That's where most people would disagree. Kids in decent families are taught at a young age to respect police officers and teachers from the word go. In a previous article, Watson dismissed the disrespecting of adults by Buffalo schoolchildren as "sassing." This girl is a 17 year old single mother, still immature enough to be disruptive in school.

I've been very critical of Superintendent Williams as well as Phil Rumore on here. However, the biggest problem with the schools these days in Buffalo is not them or the teachers or the length of the school day. It's disruptive, disrespectful students and the adults that enable them (see Rod Watson and Donne Esmonde). I feel so bad for Ieshia that she had to listen to some curse words while she was trying to "sass" an authority figure.
