Imperial Pizza one hour before the Super Bowl

Hats off to Sully and the rest of the Imperial crew. The food was great as usual. (BTW, the black thing above the pizzeria is supposed to be an airplane.)

Pizza Bowl

They're not kidding when they say the Super Bowl is really Pizza and Wings Day. I tried to order a pizza for 5:45 at 2:00PM from Imperial Pizza (thank you Jack and Robin for the gift certificate). The girl who answered the phone told me they could not take any more orders between 5 and 6PM. I said, no problem, how about 4:45? She asked me my name and she laughed when I told her it was Mike.

She said there were 2,000 Mikes in South Buffalo who had ordered pizzas today and I needed to give her a last name or a code name. I thought for a minute and then realized I didn't have a code name. I made a note in my things to do list to get one in the near future.

I told her my name was Mike Blake. She laughed and said I was the second Mike Blake to order from them today. I guess one of my cousins is watching the Super Bowl, too. Go Seahawks!...

The NT Pizza War

These pizza wars can get pretty vicious. First, we heard Pizza Junction in North Tonawanda was closing a few weeks ago, except for internet orders. Then, they reopened with new ownership. Now, it looks like their prized cook (the famous Russ Clark)has taken the secret sauce over to another place called Vito's Avenue Pizza. Vito's owner placed a sign announcing the new cook in front of his restaurant and added a taunting billboard in front of Pizza Junction. Why can't they be like South Buffalo and have a different successful pizzeria on every block?

Forget for a moment all the racial stereotypes that go with a pizzeria owner named Vito. The man in this clip, who is seen ramming his jeep into Vito's sign, is named Ryan Fleckenstein. Only in North Tonawanda would they find a Jewish Pizza enforcer. We're told Officer Nathan is investigating...

The pizza incident

I was at Leo's Pizza with a friend yesterday when the Ninja called my cell. He got out of work early so I encouraged him to meet up with us. Nothing unusual there.

Things got weird when he walked into the pizzeria with two slices from Leo's chief rival, Imperial Pizza! Apparently, the Ninja had already ordered the slices before he got in touch with me. Not wanting to waste the food or risk eating it cold, he brought it into another pizzeria in the same neighborhood. The whole thing reminded me of something Kramer might do on a Seinfeld episode. When he arrived at Leo's, the Ninja did order an Italian Sausage Sub and a drink (he's been on a health kick lately.)
Although he did his best to cover the box, an acquaintance of his was nice enough to throw him under the bus and alerted the girl at the register, who in turn, told the manager.

I have to admit I was a little uncomfortable sitting in one pizzeria, while my friend was sitting across from me, eating food from their main competitor. The manager came out from the back. As regulars, we knew the manager by face and have shared brief, pleasant conversations with him.

What the Ninja had done could only be described as bizarre. However, we thought the manager might take it all in good fun. After all, Leo's doesn't seem to be hurting for business, and anyone who knows the Ninja, knows he has a crazy sense of humor. This was not to be the case. The manager gave the Ninja a piece of his mind in front of the whole restaurant. It got so bad, the Ninja even asked him if he wanted him to leave. You could hear a pin drop as the standoff unfolded. Later on, the Ninja would go on to say as a longtime patron of Leo's on Seneca St, next to Recchio's, and the current location, he felt blindsided. The manager told him it was ok for him to stay, but said his act was disrespectful. Needless to say, the rest of the meal was very tense. For the record, I like both Leo's and Imperial.

The next night, in an effort to extend the olive branch, we went back to Leo's. As the Ninja often says, "A man who doesn't shop in his own neighborhood, can never be a man at all."

I want my pizza

What's wrong with some people these days? Did you happen to see the video of the irate customer in Amherst who flipped out when he was told there was no more desert pizza left. The authorities are speculating he might have anger issues. I'd say if you pick up a broom and start swinging it at the 16 year olds behind the counter over a $2 slice of pizza, anger issues are a fair assumption. Give this loser some pizza...

We have some exclusive footage of an earlier incident involving this same customer...

Of Mice and Men

A Philadelphia pizzeria owner found an interesting way to get a leg up on his competition. He planted a half dozen mice in their restaurants. Nikolas Galiatsatos, who I'm assuming has some ties to the Greek Mafia, tried to sabotage his two neighborhood competitors. Ironically, one of the other pizzerias is called Uncle Nicky's. He was charged with Animal Cruelty. A spokesperson for KFC opposes the charges against Galiatsatos, saying they've been adding rodents to their food for at least the past 30 years...
