One small step for man...

I love this story from Philadelphia. They say he's committing a federal crime, but I think this hacker should be considered an early frontrunner for Time Magazine's 2012 Person of the Year...

His name is Eric — last name withheld by request. His tactics are simple, but terribly effective: He uses a cell phone jammer to interrupt loud conversations on the city's number 44 bus route, resulting in dropped calls.

"A lot of people are extremely loud, no sense of just privacy or anything," said th DIY phone hacker to an NBC affiliate in Philadelphia. "When it becomes a bother, that's when I screw on the antenna and flip the switch.

"I guess I'm taking the law into my own hands and quite frankly, I’m proud of it."

The only question I have is, where can I get one of these devices? The worst offenders are the annoying cell phone users in restaurants or those standing in lines at stores arguing with their babbydaddies.. God bless technology, keeping us one step ahead of rude people.

RIP Smokin' Joe Frazier

Boxer Joe Frazier died today after a long battle with cancer. I'll always remember Frazier for the cameo he made in the first Rocky movie (1976). In this picture, he was staring down the champ, Apollo Creed, whom he accused of "ducking him" in the film. Seconds earlier, he had gone to Rocky's corner and told him to "go light on him, kid". With the fictional Creed being the heavy favorite, I thought that was one of many clever lines in the movie.

Interestingly, Frazier was a real life champ from Philadelphia. And although they have a statue for the fictional Rocky character, there is no statue for Frazier. This, in spite of the fact that Frazier returned to Philly at the end of his career and trained young aspiring boxers. Hopefully, that will change once the Philadelphia mayor reads my blog...

Philadelphia mayor lashes out

It's about time the mayor of a big U.S. city spoke the truth. Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter lashed out at his own community for a rash of recent mob attacks. I like when he tells the kids at 3:10 to pull their pants up and buy a belt. I think it annoys most adults when they see kids do this (black or white). Publicity stunt

I don't think it's too much of an oversimplification to say that the mayor of Buffalo blows. Seriously. Has this man tackled one serious issue since he's been in office? In this clip, he talks like a robot that's low on batteries.

This WIVB story is about one of those annoying bets with the mayor of the opposing team (in this case Philadelphia). How original. I can't stand New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. However, I have to admit he made me laugh a few years ago. Mayor Brown tried to initiate one of these stupid, feel good bets when the Sabres were playing the New York Islanders. Bloomberg's office tersely responded by saying, "Thanks anyway, but we're too busy actually running a city to take part in your contrived publicity stunt."

I have to admit, this year's bet is a little more interesting than than those in years past. Instead of chicken wings and Philly cheese steak, it involves an act of community service. Apparently, if the Sabres lose, Brown has agreed to perform his son's next court-ordered community service sentence with him (wearing a Flyers hat) I think it's great when families take part in things together...

Of Mice and Men

A Philadelphia pizzeria owner found an interesting way to get a leg up on his competition. He planted a half dozen mice in their restaurants. Nikolas Galiatsatos, who I'm assuming has some ties to the Greek Mafia, tried to sabotage his two neighborhood competitors. Ironically, one of the other pizzerias is called Uncle Nicky's. He was charged with Animal Cruelty. A spokesperson for KFC opposes the charges against Galiatsatos, saying they've been adding rodents to their food for at least the past 30 years...
