Big story out of Roswell

It's about time Buffalo had some good news, even if it is only potentially good news. Roswell Park has announced a new vaccine, which they think could potentially cure cancer someday.

This is extremely hopeful news, but I'd like to know more about the vaccine. I wonder how often this has happened in the past, with potential cures being discussed publicly. It is very exciting, though. Can you imagine in 2097, the Health Journals saying the cure for cancer was discovered in the outpost of Buffalo, NY in the year 2012? That would be almost as exciting as the day the lady from the Anchor Bar decided to keep the discarded chicken parts and call them wings.

It's interesting how something so big could take place right in our backyards. Curiously, there was no mention of this story on the front page of the Buffalo News this afternoon. Perhaps a cat was stuck in a tree somewhere...

Community says goodbye in Swormville

Meghan Redenbach lost her battle against ovarian cancer on Christmas Eve. Friends and family paid their respects at St. Mary's Church on Transit Road. This is both a sad and an inspirational story. The main thing the Roy Hart student left her friends, relatives, and coaches with was her fighting spirit. Thank you to Rich Newberg and WIVB for providing this story...

I came across this story today on Rivals.com. Columbia Central High School in Tennessee won their first ever state championship, hours after one of their 16 year old teammates died of colon cancer...

As he lay in his hospital bed early Friday morning, his courageous eight-month battle with cancer about to come to an end, 16-year-old Dylan Rebeor had only one question:

"Did we win?"

His mother, Heather, knowing how much her son's connection to his friends and teammates on the Columbia (Tenn.) Central football team had helped him in his fight, replied with the only possible answer:"Yes."

Dylan Rebeor lost his fight with colon cancer soon after. A few hours later, his teammates took the field - ripping through a sign that had their motto: 'Fight Like Dylan' - and made their friend's final wish come true, winning the first state title in school history.

When the game was over, Eric Belew collapsed in tears, overcome by the events of the day.

To win a game hours after a teammate dies is one thing. But the school's first ever state championship? Unbelievable.

"The blessing is that we did have these last eight months after he was diagnosed to fight hard and try to survive," his mom told the Herald-Citizen. "The last five days we realized it's not meant to be. God wanted to take him home. He has more work to do up there. It was a blessing to have this last week with him and to talk with him and know he wasn't scared. He wasn't ready, but he wasn't scared."

The fake cancer scam

It's always funny when they catch someone doing this. A woman from outside Detroit held fundraisers for her 12 year old son who was supposedly dying of cancer. She shaved his head and eyebrows and even gave him drugs to make him look drowsy at the benefits. Everything was going great until Child & Protective Services became involved...
