Williams on way out, Kane should be next

Buffalo School Superintendent James A. Williams is losing the confidence of a growing number of influential people, many of whom complain that the district botched its plans for the city's failing schools and consistently mishandles other long-standing issues confronting the system.

Among those losing faith in Williams are most of the stakeholders in the district: School Board members, parents, teachers, much of the business community, the local Regent and perhaps even the state Education Department.

The dissatisfaction with Williams reached a critical stage late last week, when the No. 2 person in the state Education Department came to Buffalo for a fact-finding mission to see how the school district is going to deal with nine of the city's most troubled schools.

If this blog contributed to informing residents of the Buffalo Public Schools corrupt administration in even the smallest of ways, I am grateful. People are now calling for an all out boycott of students on May 16th.

Many of the people who spoke with King last week say they believe the next two weeks will be a do-or-die time for the district -- and for Williams.

"The performance of the schools is really troubling," King said in a phone interview Friday evening. "Clearly the performance is not what anyone would want."

With Williams clearly on his way out, some senior members of his administration, and their ridiculously high salaries, need to follow him, quickly. Suburban resident James Kane has a preference for hiring the spoiled offspring of his politically connected friends. He is Williams' chief of staff, a position he inherited by virtue of being the entitled son of longtime political operative Don Kane. Kane has forgotten the lessons he learned growing up on Seneca Street. He has abandoned his roots and now only advocates for the politically connected from more affluent parts of the city (and suburbs). Personally, I've moved on to plan B but I can tell you this: As soon as the new superintendent comes to town, this blog will do everything in it's power to call for a complete housecleaning over at city hall, and that has to start with Buffalo's highest paid residency violator, James Kane. 2,500 people read my words last week, Kano. By this summer, it will be 5,000 a week, or I will die trying. You had a chance to advocate for someone outside of your comfort zone. You f**ked up, brother! We're spending $22,000/student each year in Buffalo and the results have been horrendous. The graduation rates are abysmal. You betrayed the Blogger. It's time for you to go...

Our quote of the week comes from Superintendent James Williams' chief of staff, former Buffalo resident James Kane: Because they are not in a union, they can put in longer hours, he said. "I'm probably in the 55-hour range [per week], myself. Some weeks I go over," he said.

James Kane has the ear of a select few in the local political crowd. The Blogger has the ear of thousands of fed up Buffalo school parents and teachers. I think it might be time to get a petition going asking Dr. Williams to resign and take Kano with him. Respect is a two way street and enough is enough.

Buffalo Superintendent Dr. James Williams tells channel 2's Josh Boose he would resign before taking a pay cut "down" to $175,000/year. Governor Cuomo (ugh! I don't even like saying that) has proposed capping every district superintendent's salary at $175,000. The noise you hear is the collective sound of students, teachers, parents, and community leaders holding the door for him...


I love the part in this clip where Ralph Pornandez says he's "not sure" whether we can hire someone competent for $175,000. I know it's such a paltry number to lead the school district in Amherst's largest suburb. There are so many high paying private sector jobs around here. Why would anyone even apply for such a minimum wage position? Go back to viewing porn on your district issued laptop, Ralphie.

Wasn't it Jack Coyle who was once quoted in the Buffalo News as saying Williams was "a great hire?" Yeah, right. Dr. Williams, residency violator James Kane, and the rest of the senior administrative staff of the Buffalo Public Schools need to go. They've proven to be nothing but failures when it comes to improving the schools. The schools are in utter chaos and teachers and parents see it every day. You had a chance to hire a good teacher, but you chose to pass him over. Now, he's ordering you and Kano to leave city hall and go work at Burger King. It's time for all the people I mentioned (who we all know were only hired because of their family's political connections) to step down. The main questions I have after reading this testimonial are, who is Ann K. Lupo and what kind of points is she trying to earn by writing it? Promotion? Raise? Jobs for her relatives? ...

Kane has always done a good job for city schools

By my reckoning, James Kane has served under six Buffalo Public School superintendents. His career has spanned decades; toiling mostly in obscurity, working hard for the parents and kids of the district as the right-hand man to those wielding power.

A recent editorial highlighted the “no-win” nature of his job. Kane’s work has always required the utmost loyalty and discretion. Period. To suggest that he is a policy maker responsible for the sometimes questionable behavior of others was totally off the mark. If The News would like a list of people from the past four decades who have behaved badly in regard to the schools, just let me know. Kane will never be on that list.

Chief of staff, executive assistant to the superintendent—the titles have changed, but the job hasn’t. He is running interference for some of the most powerful people in the community day in, day out. All guts, no glory. Kane is frequently the first one in City Hall in the morning and the last one out at night.

On behalf of the countless families and students he has compassionately assisted over the years, I wanted to set the record straight.

I never realized the tremendous sacrifice Kane made every day when he left his suburban home to do the public's work. And all for a paltry sum of $104,000/year. And to think, he could have been using his considerable talents all these years in the private sector. When Lupo talks about the families Kane has helped over the years, I'm assuming she means the inbred South Buffalonians who pay off politicians to get his ear. I'm immediately calling for Father Nelson Baker's name to be withdrawn from sainthood and replaced with James Kanes'.

Buffalo Public Schools' closed door policy

James Kane, chief of staff for superintendent James Williams: Takes $104,000/yr to help the entitled South Buffalo families find jobs in the Bflo Public School system for their mediocre spoiled children, while the rest of us schleps write blogs making fun of them.

The Buffalo School Board has decided to broadcast the interviews for their vacant seat in the East District, but this transparency was not without opposition. From today's Buffalo News...

The question of conducting the interviews and deliberations in public arose last week, when board President Ralph R. Hernandez mentioned during a committee meeting that he thought the interviews should be conducted in public. Chief of staff James M. Kane balked, saying candidate interviews in the district have always been done behind closed doors.

You can't really blame Kane, a West Seneca resident, just slumming in Buffalo temporarily. It's a process he's used to. When he's getting teaching and administrative jobs for his underachieving friends from the South Buffalo entitled class, it's always done behind closed doors, so as to make it seem as though they acquired the jobs through legitimate means. Heck, this was probably the way it was done when he was appointed to his job 20 years ago over more qualified candidates (just another one of the benefits of being the fortunate son of political operative Don Kane).This class of people doesn't understand what it means to actually compete for jobs like the rest of us from the unwashed masses. Why should they? They're "better than the rest" of us. Don't believe me? Just ask them!

The superintendent who cried wolf

Remember, last week when Buffalo superintendent James Williams threatened to layoff 900 school employees? Turns out he was just kidding...

Buffalo School Superintendent James A. Williams has been telling television reporters that the district may be forced to lay off as many as 900 district employees during this school year because of state decisions regarding pensions and charter school funding.

But a written report Williams delivered to the school board last week counters that assessment, as a school financial officer sought to clarify what Williams meant.

“We’re looking at pretty close to 900 individuals we would have to lay off,” Williams told WGRZ in response to a question about how many layoffs the district could be looking at this school year.

Williams told YNN of Buffalo the same.

But Williams informed the school board in a memo earlier in the week that a mid-year layoff of 912 people “is not possible, not recommended or being considered by the administration at this time.”

Barbara J. Smith, chief financial officer for the Buffalo Public Schools, said in an interview with The Buffalo News that she wanted to clarify what Williams meant in his comments to TV reporters. The district has no intention of laying off hundreds of people mid-year, she said.

“Nine hundred layoffs? We could never do that. That’s not good for anybody,“ Smith said.

Obviously, these are idol threats Dr. Williams continues to make in front of the TV cameras. As I suggested last week, if Williams wants to let employees go, he should start with his overpaid chief of staff, West Seneca resident James Kane...

Buffalo summer school teachers get stiffed

In a shocking development, the Buffalo Public Schools administration failed to pay it's summer school teachers on Friday as scheduled. This is surprising, since the people over at City Hall are usually known for being so well organized...

About 100 Buffalo Public Schools teachers who expected to get paid Friday for working in summer school have been told they will have to wait until Monday for their checks.
One teacher said that when she first called the payroll department about the situation, she was told the problem was with her bank.
“Summer pay is a complex organism with a lot of funding sources,” a spokesperson wrote in a brief e-mail. “Whatever the problem is, it will be resolved soon.”

Not surprisingly, those "funding sources" did not affect Buffalo's most overpaid residency violator, James Kane.

Kane's ridiculously high paycheck arrived on time at his suburban Western New York home on Friday. It doesn't matter if the teachers get paid on time, but the overpaid administrators? That's another story. Can somebody tell me what they do all day to warrant the pay they receive?

There have been recent reports of Kanes being spotted near the vicinity of Seneca Street. Please do not be alarmed. Although not seen in the area since the early 1980s, the Kanes were at one time native to the Seneca Street region.

Wildlife experts report that they may be on the move, expanding their territory in search of food, water, and more no-show government jobs for their children. If you see them at a wake (for someone they met once) or holding a clipboard at some stupid ribbon cutting ceremony, please do not approach them. Remember, they are more afraid of you than you are of them. Unless you are from a politically connected family or are wielding a large check, you probably have nothing to worry about. They will avoid you otherwise. If they see you, wave your arms, make noises, and try to make yourself appear big. Experts also advise against the use of bird feeders in the summer and leaving dumpsters open. If you see a Kane close to a neglected Seneca sidestreet, please contact 911 immediately.

The Orchard Park boys lacrosse team, as it often is against Western New York opponents, was simply too much for Bishop Timon-St. Jude in their highly anticipated matchup Friday evening. The Quakers jumped to a 4-0 start and went on to an 11-3 victory.

It was a performance that probably would have been too much for Timon — even if its best player was on the field. Timon was without senior standout and Syracuse University-bound Chris Kane. Timon coach Mike Burke said Kane — who was in uniform — was sidelined due to what he called a school administration suspension.

Tom Sullivan, in my opinion, is the best principal Bishop Timon has ever had. However, he must not have been told that the entitled don't have to follow the same rules as you and I. Chris Kane is the son of James Kane, chief of staff for Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent James Williams. Kane, a suburban resident, is also widely recognized as Buffalo's highest paid residency violator.
