2011 Buffalo Marathon

2011 Buffalo Marathon-South Buffalo's Marty Farrell briefly holds the lead (for about 1/8 of a block) in a strong, international field

Congratulations to my friend and former coworker Aileen Hoak on finishing yesterday's Buffalo Marathon in under three hours. This was Hoak's first marathon and she finished fourth overall among women in this international race.

Previously, she was known for competing in road racing (5K and 10K races). Marathons require a significantly different style of training and not all road racers make the transition easily. Unlike many serious runners, Hoak is not quirky, either. Some are so obsessed with their times, it becomes a part of their personality. Congratulations to Hoak as well as third place finisher Meaghan Hayes of Grand Island on being the top local women finishers. Their times are even more impressive when you consider that running is a part time hobby and not their primary occupation. Hoak, for example, works three jobs and runs in her spare time. The runners who come here from other countries are often professional runners in search of prize money. Not to take anything away from their accomplishments, but they have more time to train (and rest) than our local competitors. Although, you would never hear athletes like Hoak or Hayes use this as an excuse.

Speaking of quirky, how about this quote from 1st place Russian runner Veronika Lopatina, when asked about her time?...

When asked if she was happy about her time, she said, "Not so happy, but it's OK."

Next time, she hopes to break the speed of light.She made up for it, though by stating her true purpose in coming to the event...

When the race was over, Lopatina set out on the true purpose of her visit.

"I came here to see Niagara Falls," she said. "It's very close, so I decided to run the marathon and then see the Falls."

Can you really blame her? I'm sure she saw enough abandoned grain elevators during the race.

This might be the funniest clip I've put on this site in a long time. Rosie Ruiz, came out of the crowd to finish "first" among women in the 1980 Boston Marathon. After the race, she was interviewed and failed to answer basic questions about running, that even the most novice runners would know. It quickly became apparent that she was a scam artist who snuck into the race. The best part about the interview might be the constant sneezing. I think they call that a "tell" in poker. It was revealed that a few months earlier, Ruiz took a subway to finish the New York City Marathon. Hey, it's quicker than running...

Assembly seat may be opening- Send in the clowns

Assemblyman Mark Schroeder no sooner announced his candidacy for City Comptroller when at least five people expressed interest in taking his job. The Blogger will be collecting resumes and conducting endorsement interviews in the coming weeks. He will also be putting political ads on this site (so get your check books out). I spoke to the South Buffalo Rooster at the Caz Carnival (AKA Scumfest) this weekend. Here are some people being pushed and a few pushing themselves:

Never met a lie he didn't tell. Pinnocchio's puppet strings are pulled by the perennial political opportunist Ray "Wrong Turn" McGurn. Think about how many politicians I've covered on here. When I tell you that Lou's willingness to lie supercedes all others, that should really open up people's eyes and carry some weight. This man will lie about anything to anyone. It's no wonder people that don't even know me or my blog are starting to refer to him as Pinocchio. Just like Brian Davis, says here Lou is lying about his college degree. He talks a good game, but I don't think he has one. But as long as he's lying about everything else, he might as well lie about that, too.Was also a strong supporter of Andrew Cuomo against South Buffalo's Carl Paladino. A fact the Blogger will remind Carl (and his money) of. Should have been loyal, Pinocchio.Odds 2,500:1

Jeff Conrad- Pushing himself. Brian Higgins is not dumb enough to make the same mistake twice. Higgins obviously tapped the intellectually challenged Conrad for Councilman as a favor to one of Conrad's relatives a few years back. He knew he could control him, but doesn't want the inevitable headaches that would come out of Albany this time. If he were to anoint the Special Olympian this time, I'd have to say Higgins is dumber than I look. Conrad also was a strong supporter of Cuomo, convincing his supporters (all three of them) to vote against Carl Paladino. Bad move. Odds 100:1

Some guy named McGavis- Don't know him. Think he's a member of Goin' South, which is all anyone really needs to know. Next. Odds 100:1

The insult dunk tank clown from the Caz Carnival- Has as much schooling as Petrucci and Conrad combined, and is at least as honest. Odds 25:1

Anyone interested in the position should come see the Blogger immediately. It would be a good idea to bring some Imperial pizza and kneel before thou and kiss my rings. I'm waiting. Send in the clowns...

Da Vinci tennis star

The Buffalo Public Schools have been taking a beating in the press lately. All we hear about is poor test scores and low graduation rates. I think it's important to remember those students who are accomplishing great things in athletics, despite not having all the advantages of their suburban counterparts.

I just got out of a practice with our u16 girls soccer team. While most of the girls on the team attend Mt. Mercy Academy, three of them, Tricia Buchwald (Hutch Tech) and Hannah Pomeroy (Da Vinci), and Alyssa Hewitt (Da Vinci)play BPS soccer in the Fall. All three are very good players. They could easily start for most suburban high schools.

This story in the Buffalo News on Tuesday caught my attention. It profiled Van Dinh, a male tennis player from Da Vinci High School. A junior, Dinh advanced to the Sectionals before losing a close match to Clarence High School's Sean Siracusa, (5-7, 6-2, and 7-5)...

"He's a great ambassador not just for the school, but for the district," Da Vinci coach Andrew McDermott said. "We're dealing with trying to get rackets in the hands of as many kids as possible. It's a very daunting task."

The contrast between city schools and their suburban counterparts can be striking.

At Lancaster on Tuesday, there were eight sectional matches taking place at the same time, all on pristine blue and red courts. But when the Dragons get practice time, they split the two courts at Buffalo's Front Park with International Prep at Grover Cleveland.

Hopefully, next year, he'll go even further. In most sports, BPS athletes don't have the same club experience as their opponents. For example, most of Tricia, Hannah, and Alyssa's teammates at school only play soccer two months a year (in the Fall). These three play year round against strong (mostly suburban) competition.

When given the opportunity, BPS students can compete against anyone. For years, we heard the BPS schools would get creamed if they played the suburban schools in football. This was not the case. Last year, their first year in such play, they held their own and won several games against established teams. The challenge for other sports is to get the students playing against top competition year round. We also need to get more parents informed as to what's available out there. BPS athletic director Aubrey Lloyd knows it has to start at a young age. I spoke to him last week and he has several programs going on at the grammar schools. In my opinion, facilities and equipment are overrated. Getting the students out on the fields, courts, etc. competing-underrated. I think the Buffalo schools are moving in the right direction in athletics. Congratulations to Van Dinh on a terrific season.

SHERIDAN, N.Y. (WIVB) - State Police arrested a Dunkirk man Thursday, for allegedly exposing himself in the Town of Sheridan.

Several New York State Thruway patrons have been filing complaints regarding a naked man exposing himself in a lewd manner along the Thruway.

A police detail was in place Thursday morning, and police say, 52-year-old Kenneth M. Dillenburg was observed completely naked exposing himself to Thruway patrons along West Sheridan Road.

Dillenburg was interviewed by State Police Investigators and admitted to engaging in this activity over the past several weeks.

Storm

It's always funny when people try to come across as progressive and really end up making themselves look like imbeciles. A couple in Toronto is keeping the gender of their child, which they named Storm, a secret to him/her because they want the child to "decide for them-self "what sex they are. This is going to work out well...

Soon after the baby was born, in a pool of water at home, Witterick, 38, and Stocker, 39, sent an email announcing to loved ones: "We've decided not to share Storm's sex for now - a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm's lifetime (a more progressive place? ...)."

Kathy Witterick and David Stocker recently landed on the front page of The Toronto Star, explaining that they hope their third child, Storm, can remain untouched by the connotations of pink versus blue, male versus female, long enough to make up his or her own mind.

They told the Star that Storm's two older siblings - both on-the-record boys - know the baby's gender, along with a close family friend and the midwives who delivered him. They plan to keep the secret as long as Storm, 2-year-old Kio and 5-year-old Jazz are OK with it.

There's nothing unusual about Storm's genitalia, the parents note, but they've been stung by criticism of their older children for liking pink and purple clothes and other "girly" things, like the occasional dress and long hair for Jazz, who's currently sporting braids.

The family has been widely criticized by child psychiatrists across Canada but have recently received a letter of encouragement from the Saturday Night Live character "Pat."...

"Race Card" Rod at it again

The one thing great about the recent turmoil in the Buffalo Public schools is the fact it's forcing people to think about the real roots of the district's problems. Is it the school system or is it the people comprising the school system? Buffalo News columnist Rod Watson's article in today's paper was an insult to every teacher, student, and taxpayer in the city, both white and black.

Watson raises a good point when he talks about the disparities in the ratio of white to black students in the city's three best (arguably) high schools: City Honors, Da Vinci, and Hutch Tech. There's only one problem. Each of these schools chooses their students primarily on an entrance exam. Watson questions whether the entrance exams are (play the race card music) culturally biased. Culturally biased! Here is Watson, doing what he does best, making excuses and playing the race based blame game...

• Did this occur because the top schools use tests and selection criteria that are culturally biased or that give an inside edge to better-educated parents who know best how to navigate the system?

Outrageous. Fortunately, teachers, parents, and taxpayers have had enough of liberal nonsense from the likes of "Race Card" Rod. Guys like Watson want to blame everything on race. The white controlled educational system is keeping the black students down, etc., etc. But how does this explain the Vietnamese, Burmese, Thai, and Somalian refugees who come to Buffalo with little more than the clothes on their backs? They don't even know the language, yet most come to school willing to work and make something out of themselves. In no time, they are speaking English, performing well at school, and graduating. Oh, yea. Most aren't being continuously disruptive in class, either. Look at the suspension rates, Rod.

Instead of blasting grammar school parents, whose children miss 35 days a year, Watson thinks we need to form a focus group for them. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahaha. We need a focus group to tell parents that keeping their kids home 35 days a year is not in their best interest? Is he serious?...

• Why do some parents feel so little sense of efficacy when it comes to education that they don’t make sure their kids attend school, as reflected in the Buffalo Teachers Federation analysis showing alarming absenteeism rates? Who’s going to convene the parental focus group, suggested by union chief Phil Rumore, that could help find out why?

In the past, I've worked in a racially mixed charter school, where students from both races were being accepted at Hutch Tech and Da Vinci. In fact, race was rarely even discussed at this school. The white kids at this school all got along and worked hard in class. The difference? The parents of these students were involved in their kids' education. The students were not allowed to walk around the classrooms while the teacher was trying to teach. They were not permitted to talk over the teacher. Kids with behavior problems were not made the center of attention (which is exactly what they want). The whole day did not become about them. Cell phones were collected and put in a lock box until the end of the day. Homework was expected. There were consequences to misbehavior.

It's 2011. We need to stop making excuses for bad parenting and lazy students. There are so many great students in Buffalo, willing to come to school and make an effort. It has nothing to do with "culturally biased" test scores or the district. The leaders in the black community need to start asking their neighbors why they don't value education or the importance of good parenting. Watson's flimsy excuses are pathetic and quite frankly, I'm embarrassed for him.

Letters to the editor: The effects of busing

A very interesting and accurate letter in today's paper about busing's effect on the Buffalo Public Schools. Judge Curtin has his feet up somewhere, probably unaware that his court decision ruined both the city and it's schools. Anyone with the means, packed their bags and fled to the suburbs. We spent millions of dollars and wasted countless hours busing the students from one neighborhood to another. What has been the result? The schools today are more segregated than ever. I was at school #37 today (Futures Academy). The school should be surrounded by bars. Lunch should be called feeding time. I'm in the process of trying to block it out of my mind, as I will never walk through those doors again.It was a complete zoo...

Busing contributed to city school demise

Much has been written recently about the failure of the Buffalo public school system. Years ago the system had a few troubled inner-city schools. Many other schools were performing at or above standards. However, it was determined that to improve all schools that we should bus students.

Parents and students that knew and understood the value of a good education were appalled. Many had sacrificed and moved to certain areas, but busing led concerned parents to remove their children from the public system and place them in private or religious-based schools. Those who could afford, moved to suburban areas. Thus, began the demise of the city school system then doomed to become a glorified free baby sitting service.

Busing is the greatest failure since prohibition. It has succeeded in helping create the child obesity epidemic and also, no doubt, helped raise the price of gasoline to over $4 a gallon. Think of the glut of gas that would be dumped into the market if all the unnecessary yellow buses were off the road, and the lines of cars stranded behind them could move more freely.

However, busing, unlike prohibition, is here to stay. The damage is done and I believe irreversibly.

Kyle Busch looking for attention

I'm not a big fan of NASCAR, but obviously driver Kyle Busch is looking for some cheap publicity these days. He was pulled over in North Carolina for going 128 in a 45 MPH zone. Hey, loser: you're not at the track. Don't put other peoples' lives at risk...

STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR driver Kyle Busch was clocked by a North Carolina sheriff's deputy going 128 mph in a 45 mph zone and was cited for careless and reckless driving and speeding, a law enforcement spokesman said Tuesday.

Iredell County Sheriff's Office Capt. Darren Campbell said a deputy stopped Busch's 2012 yellow Lexus sports car on a road between Troutman and Mooresville, where the 26-year-old driver lives. It's about 30 miles north of Charlotte.

Train accident

From WIVB: A terrible story about a 10 year old boy hit by a train and losing both of his legs in the Broadway/Fillmore section of Buffalo. The paramedics did a great job to save the child's life.

In this clip, neighbors complain that CSX needs to put up a fence to stop "4 and 5 year olds" from playing on the tracks. CSX counters that fences in the past have not worked as a deterrent, as the kids hop them anyway. Most commenters to the story think the neighbors need try a new and radical approach: keeping an eye on their children...

The spoiler

I'm sure Republicans are furious at Jack Davis' candidacy today. He might have cost Jane Corwin a victory, although I think her shrieking chief of staff and the incompetent Nick Longworthy were more of a factor.

I love the role of a spoiler. Without it, the two major parties become complacent and won't listen to the needs of the constituents. In fact, I'm watching with interest to see how the County Legislature redistricting process unfolds. If there's a competitive race between "Einstein" Whalen and someone from another neighborhood, I'd love to throw my independent hat in the ring. I'd love to hear Whalen's people talk about how smart he is. Same goes for Dave Franczyk. If the council makes my district into Fillmore, I'll do the same thing. Why support these entrenched politicians when they don't care about the everyday residents of their district? When I ran in 2001, I got 33% of the vote. A spoiler took 10%. I had no problem with that. He had every right to run, as do people like Davis...

Delaware Park

From channel IV: Vandalism over the weekend at Delaware Park. This is what happens when you give everything to an entire generation for free. They don't understand hard work or appreciate the value of things.

They report over 100 teenagers and young adults partied in the park. Buffalo Police need to apprehend the suspects and make an example out of them. Parks seem to be the most popular place for vandalism. Every time we have a home game for our youth soccer club, we have to pick up the goals (that have been completely overturned). Often times, they cut the netting with a knife (why they do this, I have no idea) and we have to duct tape the cut pieces together. It's really sad. I'm starting to think Singapore has the right idea. Isn't that where they cane people for graffiti and vandalism?

October Surprise

California radio host/preacher Harold Camper now says the end of the world will actually take place on October 21st, 2011. From USA Today...

Camping said that he's now realized the apocalypse will come five months after May 21, the original date he predicted. He had earlier said Oct. 21 was when the globe would be consumed by a fireball.

Saturday was "an invisible judgment day" in which a spiritual judgment took place, he said. But the timing and the structure is the same as it has always been, he said.

It probably will happen on October 21st. The Bills will be 7-0 and all of a sudden the earthquakes will start. By the way, it looks like the church/apocalyptic business is the place to be...

Lackawanna fire

There was a fire in Lackawanna yesterday. Cup of Joe's Diner on Ridge Rd. was completely destroyed. I've never eaten there, but I know it's been a fixture on the other side of the bridge for years. I have a lot of respect for businesses that operate in poorer neighborhoods. This part of Lackawanna has seen better days. From this clip, it appears many neighborhood residents will miss this popular hangout...

South Bflo. now part of Fillmore District

This is the old map of the council districts. The new map will have the Fillmore District sink into South Buffalo to keep career politician David Franczyk's district predominantly white.

The reapportionment panel, a group of hangers-on associated with various Buffalo Common Council members, has come up with their plan to change the Council districts in the city of Buffalo.

The process is nothing more than an absurd charade. The whole objective of the committee is to make sure each district stays "voter friendly" for each of the council members, while keeping the district populations roughly the same. After all, these aren't temporary positions, but positions for life. This process has been made more difficult by the mass exodus taking place in every district except North and South Buffalo.

Voters in my district (the area between St. Agatha's Church and Tifft/South Park will undoubtedly be surprised to learn that they will soon be considered part of the Fillmore District. That way, perennial do-nothing, career politician Dave Franczyk will be able to keep his district predominantly white, ensuring many more years of twiddling his thumbs in city hall.

It's funny how the leaders of the city preach racial unity, yet go out of their way to divide neighborhoods by race and class. I'm calling for radical change. Under my plan, the Common Council would consist of seven people (two blacks, two whites, two Puerto Ricans, and the Council President, who will be of Burmese descent.

The district boundaries will be completely eliminated. The white residents of the city will pick two white representatives, the black residents will pick two black representatives, and the Puerto Ricans will pick two Puerto Rican leaders. The Council President will be chosen by a local witch doctor from Grant Street. If you have an issue, you call your representative. Why not? I'd rather do this than have stupid names like Lovejoy, Fillmore, and South that have nothing to do with where we live.

I notice that Coolidge Rd. is not part of the new Fillmore District. What would the McKinley Circle Lady do if that happened? All of her government funded flowers would probably wilt. She talks a good game, but she doesn't want to live next door to anyone who is not white, or working for the city. Why don't they just change the name of the new Fillmore District to The South Buffalo White Trash Region? That's obviously what the people downtown think of it. Personally, I could care less. I consider my neighborhood a lawless, tribal region (like Eastern Afghanistan).

We don't answer to any of the city hall suits, anyway. The people in my district listen to the words of the Rooster and read the words of the Blogger. The Rooster knows more about what goes on around here than anyone in city hall. With his Polish surname, perhaps the Rooster would make a good opponent for Franczyk next year in a three way race with Darnell Jackson...
