The theory that the "Rapture"--or Judgment Day--will occur on May 21 appears to have originated with the 89-year-old leader of the ministry Family Radio Worldwide, Harold Camping, who earlier predicted the end of the world on September 6, 1994. He went back to the drawing board and says his calculations are now correct. (The Daily Beast's Bryan Curtis profiles Robert Fitzpatrick, one of Camping's most ardent followers, who gave up his life savings to spread the word about the coming day of reckoning. "For Fitzpatrick, the calculation's outlandishness confirms its rightness," Curtis writes. " 'A genius could not understand this,' he says, 'because God has to open your mind to allow you to understand this.' ")

I wonder what their excuse is going to be on Sunday. I'm going with, "it was just a miscalculation." Anyway, I'm thinking about having a "rapture" party just in case. Oh, wait. I don't have any friends...

Some of Buffalo's lowest-performing schools should be turned into charter schools, a local attorney told the Common Council's Education Committee on Wednesday.

Such a move would provide more flexibility to bring needed "structural" change to the troubled schools, said Steven H. Polowitz, a co-founder of Tapestry Charter School.

Yes, Steven. The reason charter schools outperform traditional public schools has nothing to do with the fact they pick and choose which students to keep. If they have a student doing poorly or causing problems in class, they send them back to the public schools. Most people know the main objective of weasels like Polowitz has nothing to do with education and everything to do with profit. You're not fooling anyone Stevo. Stick to something you're good at(ie. chasing ambulances).

Great idea

The Buffalo school district has proposed a great way to combat it's failing schools and low graduation rates: larger class sizes. Wait a minute. Can you run that by us again?...

Under the proposed budget, the maximum class sizes would increase to 30 from the current 25 in kindergarten through third grade, to 32 from 28 in fourth through sixth grade and to 30 from 28 in seventh and eighth grades.

57 year old Don Gorske, no relation to former Erie County Executive Dennis Gorski, will eat his 25,000th Big Mac on Tuesday. What I find funny, is how thin he looks. Doctors don't have a clue...

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) - Don Gorske plans to eat his 25,000th Big Mac on the 39th anniversary of eating his first.

A special ceremony is planned at McDonald's in Fond du Lac Tuesday afternoon.

The 57-year-old Fond du Lac man says he ate nine on May 17, 1972 and has only missed nine days since then, for various reasons. He usually eats two a day.

He has kept most of the boxes or receipts or has made specific notes in calendars that he's kept.

Gorske says he probably has an obsessive-compulsive disorder but he doesn't consider it a problem.

He jokes that 25,000 is a milestone because people didn't think he'd live this long. But he says he recently saw a doctor who said he was in good health and his cholesterol is low.

This story reminded me of a promotion McDonalds had in conjunction with the 1984 summer Olympics. Every time you purchased food that summer, you were given a card with a specific event. If an athlete or team from the USA won a gold medal, you won a free Big Mac. If they won a silver medal, you got an order of fries. Bronze-a large Coke.

Well, the Soviets and the Eastern Bloc countries all pulled out as a payback to the US, for pulling out four years earlier in Moscow. So pretty much, any kid (or adult) could eat every day for free that summer at McDonald's, assuming the US athletes could beat out traditional Olympic heavyweights like Trinidad & Tobago. I just remember going to McDonald's like ten days in a row to the point where I didn't even want it anymore. They had a big board in the lobby with each event and the events' winners listed. Hey, the USA beat Liechtenstein in Water Polo! Great. I'd like another Big Mac, please. Puke...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Researchers hired by the U.S. Roman Catholic bishops to determine the causes of the sex crisis that convulsed the church dismissed all the usual suspects:

Few of the offenders were pedophiles. The abusers were not acting on their homosexuality. Mandatory celibacy did not turn clerics into molesters.

Instead, most of the priest-offenders came from seminary classes of the 1940s and 1950s who were not properly trained to confront the upheavals of the 1960s, when behavioral norms were upended and crime overall in the United States spiked, the researchers said.

"There's no indication in our data that priests are any more likely to abuse children than anyone else in society," said Karen Terry, principal investigator for the report, at a news conference where the report was released Wednesday.

What data were they looking at? With the exception of Boy Scout leaders, everyone knows priests were the biggest molesters of the 20th century. Give us a break. You take thousands of weirdos and put them in charge of alter boys and tell them they don't have to follow the same rules as everyone else in society. What did people expect to happen? I'm not saying all priests are strange, but if you're catholic, go back and look at the dozen or so priests you had in your parish and perform an honest evaluation. Most were not molesters. However, many had issues. They can come up with any kind of study they want to try and rewrite recent history. Most people are not fooled...

Contract with Antarctica

A protester throws glitter and confetti on Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich during a book signing. Nice job loser, except for the fact that you barely got any on him.

Seriously, we need to encourage the throwing of eggs and rotten tomatoes at both Democrats and Republicans, as they leave better stains than confetti. I thought Gingrich died in 1995. Wasn't he the one who came up with the Contract with America ? Can we sue him for breach of contract?

Redemption

Converting a penalty kick at this level is not as easy as most people would think. If the shooter tries to use finesse and the goalkeeper guesses right, he/she will probably make the save. If the shooter blasts it (like Italy's Roberto Baggio did in 1994), it is quite easy to mishit the ball and send it into the 300 level. OK. That's an exaggeration, but you know what I mean...


Fortunately for Baggio, he got his chance at redemption in France in 1998. With thousands of fans taunting him and reminding him of his poor kick in 94', Baggio's reaction after converting the kick was brilliant. There is nothing like silencing your critics. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!....
