15 feet of snow in Alaska
The Alaskan town of Cordova has been hit with 15 feet of snow this winter. It's gotten so bad, they've even run out of shovels. You have to check out the snow removal truck at 0:50 seconds. The snow is dumped into the back of the truck, where the temperature is 150 degrees. The snow is then melted into nearby sewers. I always wondered why Buffalo didn't have something like this...

Winter storm warning
Boy, is it windy out there in Western NY. To speak in the vernacular of the peasantry...
A strong cold front as ushered in high winds and rain but through the rest of the evening and early overnight we'll begin the transition to lake effect snow.
A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect for Northern Erie and Genesee Counties through noon Monday.
Accumulations may reach 4-7 inches tonight with an additional 2-3 inches early Monday leading to storm totals of 6-10 inches of accumulation. The higher amounts will likely be closer to the Buffalo south towns.

Bloomberg fails in snow removal efforts
Remember this summer when New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was all over the media saying Carl Paladino didn't have what it took to lead? New York City got hit with a snowstorm last week and four days later, it's streets still weren't plowed. Bloomberg told the residents to "relax and take in a Broadway show." Not exactly Jimmy Griffin. This might have went over well in Manhattan, but not in the other four Burroughs, where the people found his comment out of touch. I'm surprised he didn't tell them to eat cake. New York City bloggers are posting photos of uncleared streets, while Bloomberg's elitist Manhattan street is plowed down to the pavement.
When faced with a two term limit a few years ago, Bloomberg was able to bribe some councilmembers to change the law, so he could remain mayor. We're giving him our 2010 Deer Trapped in Headlights Award for this press conference on the city's abysmal snow removal efforts. Let's see if the rich guy can buy his way out of this one. Why doesn't he just call Fred Dicker? I thought those two clowns had the answers to everything...

Storm fallout
A bunch of suits and a guy from Babcock got together in city hall to discuss the recent snowstorm and the city's response. Dave Franczyk has been in city hall way too long. Where's the hook?
Blah Blah Blah. Don't these people have any real work to do? Kearns says the city needs a "designated coordinator" to oversee snow emergency operations. I'm not sure if he's aware of this, but that position used to be known as the Streets Commissioner. I'd like to nominate this guy for the position...

The blame game
Whatever you might think of the mayor's snow removal performance, people should not take it out on the crews removing the snow. These guys have a very difficult job. They are often times unappreciated by the city hall hierarchy, until a storm of this magnitude comes along. Then, they are asked to perform double and triple shifts without much rest.
The two plow operators I tried to bribe(my driveway wasn't going to clear itself) were both really down to earth guys. Overall, I thought it took a long time to start the process of clearing the streets. But once it started, the city crews worked hard. It's not an easy job, yet I've seen a great deal of snow removed.
One of our reporters was in the Apollo Restaurant on Hopkins St. yesterday. He witnessed some Crystal Street residents giving the plow operators a hard time. He said they questioned the snow removers for taking a break. This is unfortunate. They deserve a break just like anyone else. The same witness told me the people on Allegany Street were bringing hot cocoa and coffee to the weary snow removers. Two streets. Two different approaches.
We were talking at dinner time tonight about the Blizzard of 77. The whole street (including many elderly residents) came out and shoveled Spaulding Street in South Buffalo. The street was one of those old brick streets and not very plow-friendly. We didn't call the news and complain about the mayor. Times have really changed. The only way the whole street would come out today would be if the government was giving something out for free. Now, everyone wants things taken care of immediately. It doesn't always work that way. I think the approach the workers took was pretty sensible. They created giant piles of snow and are now transporting those piles to the old steel plant site. In my opinion, they've done a good job and people should just be thankful for all the things they have.

Cleanup continues in South Buffalo
The city of Buffalo continues to struggle in it's efforts to clear 20% of the city of snow. Imagine if the whole city was snowed in. This Public Works Commissioner (Steven Stepniak) is a real competent fellow. Last year, my mother sent him a nice letter suggesting they keep the marina open year round. He sent a response (which she still has) explaining that the cold weather we have here would make it impossible to do so. Two months later, Brian Higgins and Deputy Mayor Brown were down there with their Elmer Fudd hats on, announcing they were going to keep it open all year.
I just came in from West Seneca on Potters Road. As soon as I crossed the border, I got a welcome to Buffalo message in the form of large ice chunks covering the pavement. South Park Avenue and Seneca Street were a mess, too. 48 hours after the storm. However, I thought they did a good job on the side streets by my house. Commissioner: I know you guys read my fantastic articles. If you want positive press next storm, I'll be expecting a crew of ten workers in front of my house immediately after the first snowfall. I also would appreciate my driveway plowed and a case of beer left at my door. Like the neighborhood boss in the Godfather said, all I'm asking you to do is wet my beak...

Where are all the plows?
Snow has fallen in only one section of the city(South Buffalo) but plows have inexplicably been nowhere to be found. Despite what some people are saying, I don't think politics is at play. More like sheer incompetence.
A spokesman for city hall explains that overnight someone broke into the Broadway barns and stole all the plows. Police are being tight lipped regarding the investigation but are said to be on the lookout for one main suspect (pictured here)...

Pink Snow in Babcock Could Be Algae (Blogger's Opinion)
I read about this recently on a site I follow called Fark.com. Pink snow fell in the Philadelphia area just like we had in Buffalo. Some kid came out of his house and informed the scientists that he had looked it up on the internet. He believed it was due to an algae called chlamydomonas nivalis, more commonly known as watermelon snow. Later, scientists verified his claim.Could someone forward this article to the people investigating the pink snow in Buffalo? It sounds very similar to me but Buffalo's could also be from a company.
That's what I like about city neighborhoods. If this had happened in Orchard Park, there would be a town meeting called. The DEC would be called in to investigate. Schools would be closed and they'd be talking about making their kids wear surgical masks before they go outside. In Babcock, it was just a typical Wednesday. As long as the pink snow didn't affect Bingo at the community center, nobody really cared.
