Where'd they find this guy?

A News 4 reporter uses a bad choice of words in describing a suspect's apparel...

Looks familiar

Thank you Billy Rieman for sharing this actual news photo. This is the reason I would never convict someone based solely on witness identification. I've read too many stories of people spending decades in jail for heinous crimes, only to be cleared later through DNA evidence.

This reminds me of a true story: In the mid 1980's, Buffalo had a wackjob on the loose shooting black people at random for no reason. Due to the type of weapon he used, the media nicknamed him the "22-caliber killer." At the same time, we had a moron living across the street from us nicknamed "Mad Dog". From time to time, he would get drunk and stand out in front of his house in a KKK uniform screaming nonsensically about the end of the white race. (We still have the photos to prove it). He was a bald man in his 50's with a very distinctive look about him.

Law enforcement came out with a composite sketch of the suspect in the shootings and the Buffalo News published it, in an effort to find the killer. Everyone in the neighborhood was shocked, as the sketch clearly was identical to "Mad Dog." I wouldn't be surprised if his friends (if he had any) had him contact the police to tell them it wasn't him. A few weeks later, Buffalo police arrested Joseph Christopher, who looked nothing like the drawing, and convicted him of the murders. He was a military man stationed in Georgia and had bragged about the killings.

Barry said it would be like this

Channel 2 is doing this very special story about Barry Lillis' battle with alcoholism. In the following promo, they say something to the effect of, "not many people knew about Barry's double life." Double life? Half of Western New York knew this guy was tanked before, after, and sometimes during his weather reports. I know people who watched channel 2 just to see if he could make it through the report without falling over. Can't a man relax?...

News anchor laughs while covering murder

Looks like we might have a news anchor looking for a new job soon. This woman laughs uncontrollably while describing a murder. She's not laughing at the crime but at a picture of the suspect (the victim's husband.) It kind of reminds me of laughing in church when you're a child. Once you start, it's hard to stop and it's contagious. I'm not overly sensitive by any means, but I would have to say the news anchor fails the professionalism test on this one. You be the judge. Thanks for the story Annie K...

Channel 4 Harasses the Woman in White

I don't remember at what point the news stopped becoming about the news and started becoming just another form of entertainment. Channel 4 did a story on their Wake Up show about "The Woman in White". In case you never saw her, she's the woman walking around Allentown covered from head to toe in white clothing. Even on hot summer days, her whole face and body are covered.

In this story, we learn the woman's name is Irene. She says she is allergic to color and that her race is white. This, despite the fact that she is clearly black. The news didn't show it but the woman in white also discussed Obama's Health Care plan, Bass Pro, and the Buffalo Bill's problems at the offensive line position.

Why not just let this poor woman live her life? So her choice of clothing is bizarre. How is this a news story? Give her a break. She's obviously mentally unstable. You want to do a news story about a local weirdo? Don Paul is sitting right next to you in your own damn studio. Not to be outdone, I hear Channel 7 is going to do a story next week about the guy who sits on South Park Avenue next to his guitar (but has never been seen playing it).

If this lady in white were smart, she would charge Cellino & Barnes money to advertise on the back of one of her robes. I think it would be great if, one day, she just decided to switch to all black clothing. At least it would give people in this small, boring town one more thing to gossip about.

International Update: Saudia Arabia

An anthropologist would say, who are we to judge the norms of another society? But then, you hear stories like this and wonder if it is not a basic human rights violation. A Saudi Arabian man was sentenced to five years in jail and 1,000 lashes for bragging about his sex life on a popular Saudi television show. He was charged with "publicizing vice", not to be confused with the 80s show Miami Vice. In the US, such a guy would just be made fun of at his neighborhood tavern.

Al-Jami, a 'fixer' who books guests on the show, got off easy. She was sentenced to 60 lashes and a two year travel ban. So much for freedom of the press. This is a country that still gives lashes to rape victims. I love it when people criticize this country. I wonder how many lashes critics like me would be sentenced to? I hardly doubt they would waste their time with lashes.

In a similar story, 20 foreigners face lashing and prison terms for attending a party where alcohol was served and men and women danced. Wasn't this the premise for the 80s movie Footloose? Maybe a Saudi Arabian version of the movie is in the works. Remind me not to leave New York state.
