Arrest made in 1979 cold case

Amazingly, after 33 years, an arrest has been made in the abduction and murder of 6 year old Etan Patz. I've casually followed this case for years, and from time to time, would hear about a potential lead or a new suspect in the case. Patz was the New York City boy, who never made it to his bus stop in 1979. His body has never been found and his disappearance shocked the entire city. He became the first missing person to have his picture placed on a milk carton.

Unfortunately, there are still more questions than answers in this case. 51 year old Pedro Hernandez, whose attorney says has a history of mental illness, confessed to the crime this week. Please say he gave details that only the killer would know. In a coincidental move, he also moved to New Jersey right after the disappearance.

Today's news must come as a relief to convicted pedophile Jose Ramos. In 2004, a civil jury deemed him responsible for the child's murder. In fact, the Patz family was awarded the symbolic sum of $2 million (which they have not collected, since Ramos is in jail for another molestation). Ramos has steadfastly denied any involvement in the disappearance of the child.

It will be interesting to see what evidence, if any, is eventually made public in this case. Is there really new evidence or is an ambitious DA trying to make a name for himself?

Then and now

The man who killed a defenseless four year old nineteen years ago, is up for parole again. Now 32, Eric Smith committed the unspeakable crime when he was just 13. I don't envy the parole Board.

I do think Smith should remain in prison, for the protection of society. This case reminds me of the Niagara Falls sociopath William Schrubsall. Schrubsall beat his mother to death the night before he was supposed to deliver his high school valedictorian speech. Psychiatrists pleaded for his release, claiming he was reformed and would not be a threat to society. Schrubsall committed some minor sexual assaults and fled the area. Years later, he was found in Canada living under an assumed identity. In Canada, he had committed numerous violent sexual assaults against young women.

Sadly, Smith is right where he has to be. I've seen interviews with him and actually feel sorry for him. There is no doubt he was terrorized for the way he looked and acted as a child. However, what he did is evidence of a sociopath. I think it would be a big risk to let him out again. I'd be interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this one.

Man murders friend over a sandwich

The trashers have no idea how to resolve disputes, even minor ones. Even before seeing this story, I was thinking they should start giving people longer sentences for fighting or committing crimes over trivial things. The Breckenridge Street man in this story was convicted of killing a woman friend over a sandwich. A sandwich. Seriously? People like this do not deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of us...

International update: The Philipines II

I think this situation could have been handled better. A man in the Philippines was teased about his new haircut, so he did what any normal person would. He killed his barber...

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Philippine authorities say a mentally ill man who fatally stabbed his barber after he was teased about his new haircut has been shot dead inside a jail by the victim's brother.

Cheektowaga murder mystery

In a bizarre story, Cheektowaga police are looking into the possibility of a dead women buried underneath Joe Miller's apartment. Miller found a note in the fuse box which seems to be a confession to a 2003 homicide (or a very bad April Fool's joke)...

Misplaced praise

When former Burgard basketball player Ritchie Campbell returned to the courts this past week, he was greeted with a large ovation...

The now 40-year-old Campbell and former Burgard star received a loud ovation (some even stood) from the estimated 500 at City Honors during pregame introductions for the 411 Legends All-Star Game.

I wonder how the family of his shooting victim feels about his reception. You might remember, Campbell shot a young mother to death after she asked him to keep the noise down when he came home one night drunk...

He was released from prison last winter after serving 17 years for first-degree manslaughter.

Campbell, who once was considered a legitimate NBA prospect in the same vain as Ruffin and Clifford Robinson, was released for good behavior after serving most of a 12- to 25-year sentence for killing Yvette Donaldson during the early morning hours of April 27, 1994.

On that day, Campbell arrived at his girlfriend's apartment drunk, carrying a handgun he said was given to him for protection. Campbell started singing and creating a disturbance. A neighbor came over and asked him to keep the noise down because her child was sleeping. Campbell stepped outside the apartment and raised the gun toward the woman. It went off.

Two days later, the 32-year-old mother was dead from a gunshot wound to the neck.

I'll tell you, I hate when I come home drunk and I'm singing really loud and my loaded handgun "accidentally" goes off and kills someone. Standing ovation? What's wrong with the idiots in this crowd? The only reason he was the all time leading scorer in WNY basketball is because Burgard's idiot coach used to leave him in the game when Burgard was beating teams like City Honors by 75 points in the 4th quarter.

D.C. Killer

Cold cases and unsolved mysteries have always fascinated me. Police in Washington D.C. plan to start a website devoted to catching a serial rapist and murderer, who terrorized Montgomery County during the 1990's. His assaults abruptly stopped in 1998.

The website is a good idea. I don't claim to be any sort of expert on these types of crimes, but judging from cases I've followed, it wouldn't surprise me if the police have already interviewed the killer. The Buffalo Bike Path murderer (Altemio Sanchez), Gary Ridgway (the Green River Killer), and Paul Bernardo(the Scarborough, Ontario rapist), and others were all questioned (and released) years before they were charged in their respective cases. From the Associated Press...

Police say DNA connects eight rapes or attempted sexual assaults in Montgomery County from 1991 to 1998 to the Aug. 1, 1998 death of Christine Mirzayan. She was accosted by a man while walking home to a Georgetown University dormitory after a barbecue with friends. Mirzayan, a 28-year-old biochemist who had a summer fellowship with the National Academy of Sciences, was sexually assaulted and bludgeoned to death with an object weighing about 75 pounds. She screamed for help as she was attacked, Farish said.

The assaults generally occurred between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and targeted women from their teens to their mid- to late 40s and of varying ethnic backgrounds, Mudano said.

The time of the attacks seems pretty relevant also. I'll bet they can narrow the suspects down based on their work schedules, family commitments, etc. This man could be in jail on an unrelated case. He could be dead. Or he could have stopped attacking victims for some other reason. In any event, it will be interesting to see whether the police get any helpful clues from cyberspace...

Unsolved crimes in WNY

14 year old Nancy Scamarra disappeared from Williamsville in 1984

I find unsolved cases to be very intriguing. There's always the feeling that somebody knows something that will give detectives the break they are looking for.

There are two cases in WNY that come to mind: One is an unsolved murder. The other is an unsolved disappearance. In the first case, the body of a 15 year old girl, Catherine Herold, was found along the railroad tracks along Military Road in Kenmore in 1985. Her father, who had died of a heart attack one year earlier, had been the Executive Director of the Buffalo Museum of Science. At the time, authorities said she had begun hanging out with a bad crowd. At the time, they had no idea that a serial killer was walking around Western New York. The railroad tracks, where Herold's body was found, are the same tracks where Bike Path Killer Altemio Sanchez had raped at least two other girls in the Riverside section of Buffalo. In fact, this location in Kenmore was a half mile from American Brass (where he had worked the night shift). I'm convinced Sanchez attempted to assault this girl, who fought him off violently (just like Joan Diver, his last victim had). She had been strangled with a garrote. Unfortunately, no DNA was found at the scene. Of course, Sanchez denies being involved in this killing, which means nothing. He's a coward who denied being involved in any killings until he was confronted with proof. At the time, police seemed to think Herold's lifestyle and choice of friends caught up with her. Coincidentally, that's the same thing Buffalo Police thought when Majane Mazur's body was found along Exchange Street. Mazur had been a known prostitute. Police had no idea Sanchez was involved until his DNA appeared at the scene. If it wasn't for DNA, Sanchez would have never even been viewed as a potential suspect in the Mazur case. I hope someday, Herold's family will find out who the scum was that took her life.
"15-year-old's murder in 1985 has strong similarities to Bike Path killings; investigators look for link to Sanchez".

I just read about the second case the other day in the Buffalo News. 14 year old Nancy Scamurra disappeared after getting into an argument with one of her siblings on July 1st, 1984. She was last seen heading towards North Forrest Road in Williamsville. From the article, it seems like Amherst Police don't think she was abducted by a stranger. The obvious question to me is, who was she hanging out with at the time?

Amherst Police are going over old leads and interviewing people after 27 years. With the year being 1984, it wouldn't even shock me if Sanchez was involved in Scamurra's disappearance. We know at this time he was raping girls and women all over WNY. He killed a women in Clarence (Joan Diver) and another in Amherst (Linda Yalem). There is no proof of his involvement in this case, however. Crimes like these would keep me up at night if I was a detective. I hope both of them get solved someday. A book on unsolved crimes in WNY might be an interesting one.

News anchor laughs while covering murder

Looks like we might have a news anchor looking for a new job soon. This woman laughs uncontrollably while describing a murder. She's not laughing at the crime but at a picture of the suspect (the victim's husband.) It kind of reminds me of laughing in church when you're a child. Once you start, it's hard to stop and it's contagious. I'm not overly sensitive by any means, but I would have to say the news anchor fails the professionalism test on this one. You be the judge. Thanks for the story Annie K...

Murder defendant rips judge in Niagara County

If you're a defendant in a murder trial, it's probably not a good idea to rip the judge right before sentencing. 19 year old Anthony Allen, convicted of murdering 24 year old group home worker Renee Greco, did just that against the advice of his attorneys...

"Your actions are worse than most of the people who you sentence in this courtroom on a regular basis. You made the changes that you did so that you could have the satisfaction to sentence an innocent man to 25 years to life on television. But it doesn't matter to you whether I'm guilty or not as long as you get the privilege to be heard and seen. You disgrace the title "honorable" and you don't deserve to have it in front of your name," said Allen.

Judge Sperrazza responded by sentencing him to 25-years to life.

The young man is actually a very articulate speaker, which makes it sad that he chose the path he did in life. He and another defendant murdered Greco in cold blood to cover up a $160 theft. I still find it hard to believe that the agency left Greco alone to supervise violent criminals...

Unsolved murder in Livingston County

This girl, identified as Jane Doe, was found dead on November 9th, 1979.

Stories like this are very sad. Authorities in Livingston County have spent 31 years trying to figure out the identity of a missing teenager found in a corn field in 1979. With all the advances in DNA and the availability of the internet, you would think somebody knows something. Tragically, these cases are so prevalent. My guess is she was a runaway from a small town. Who knows? Maybe someone will recognize her from this story.

Group home killer sentenced

25 years in prison isn't enough for Anthony Allen. He should spend the rest of his life behind bars for the killing of group home worker Renee Greco, as should his co-conspirator Robert Thousand.

They killed her to cover up a $160 theft. How does the state allow a group home to have one woman watch several violent male criminals? You won't see a more clear example of negligence. This was a tragedy waiting to happen.

Residents stage burning of Buffalo News

Residents gathered to protest the Buffalo News for it's article on the criminal pasts of the City Grill shooting victims. They burned copies of the newspaper. When you have alcohol, guns, and gang members out past midnight, it's a recipe for disaster. I don't fault the Buffalo News for reporting on the victims' pasts. The fact is, the criminal lifestyles of those involved led to them associating with the shooter. The victims' lifestyle should in no way diminish the magnitude of this unnecessary tragedy, but it does help give a possible explanation as to why it may have happened.

7 of 8 City Grill victims had criminal past

The Buffalo News released this information today about the victims of the City Grill shooter:

Eight young people who grew up on Buffalo's streets were gunned down in a hail of bullets last weekend outside City Grill downtown, four of them fatally.

And arrest and conviction records.
Their records indicating past or present associations with crime begets a certain lifestyle risk, law enforcement and criminology experts say.

We don't need law enforcement or criminology experts to tell us that. The picture the families gave the news showed guys in their 30s flashing gang symbols. Nothing should be done to punish City Grill. These were criminals and shootings are one of the things criminals do. The news also pointed out:

-One of the dead victims was on probation and forbidden from being inside any establishment serving alcohol.
-Two of the eight who were shot served state prison time on weapons or assault charges.
-Five are convicted felons.
-Six have been arrested by Buffalo police since 2008.

The scary part is that these guys were all out downtown to begin with. You, I, or one of your loved ones could easily have been downtown around City Grill and crossed paths with these people. Of course, now that the victims were shot, area leaders are describing them as saints:

"Because they had one, two arrests, it caused them to be slaughtered? That's just really ridiculous," said Arlee Daniels Jr., chairman of the Stop the Violence Coalition. "You show me a man on the face of the earth who never sinned."

"Which one of us growing up was Mother Teresa, other than Mother Teresa?" asked the Rev. Kinzer Pointer, who knew several of the victims and their families. "To paint everyone with a brush that their lifestyle led to this? Give me a break."

I hate to tell Daniels and Pointer this but the people I know have not been arrested for assault and do not carry loaded firearms around with them. Look at a few examples from this case:

Robbs was sentenced to prison in 2001 after he shot at another man but missed and shot an innocent bystander, a 51-year-old woman, in the ankle. Shortly after the shooting, an eyewitness led police to where Robbs was playing basketball.

Tiffany Wilhite, 31, who was killed in the massacre outside City Grill, was serving a five-year sentence of probation for felony reckless endangerment in connection with a January 2009 fight outside a Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood bar where she used her Jeep Cherokee to run down four women, breaking one of the victim's pelvis in four places.

Willie R. McCaa III, 26, who was also killed, had survived a March 2008 shooting outside an East Side store. He was scheduled for trial last week in State Supreme Court on charges he and another man robbed a man at gunpoint in May 2008 at Kensington Avenue and Godfrey Street.

These were people with criminal records who lived a dangerous lifestyle. Should they have been shot to death? No. Is it unfortunate? Yes. Should we be surprised it happened based on their lifestyle choices? No.

City Grill Shooting

Four peoples' lives were tragically cut short because one gang member decided to open fire on Saturday night outside the City Grill Restaurant on Main St. Criminals in this country have access to guns because it is not a priority to take these guns away from them. They would still fight (with knives or their fists), but these deadly shootings would be eliminated if the government chose to make this a priority. It seems to me there should be stiffer penalties given to people convicted of supplying guns to the wrong hands. Kids have guns. Gang members have guns. Who is supplying them? It is way too easy to get a handgun in this country. You mix drugs, gangs, and easy access to guns and this is the result...
