Fish dying at Union Ship Canal

 











I went for a walk last week around the Union Ship Canal and was shocked to see hundreds of dead fish on the ice. Looks like I wasn't the only one. Someone contacted WIVB about it...

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - News 4 is working to learn more about a disturbing sight along the Union Ship Canal in Buffalo.

Our viewers tipped us off to loads of dead fish and even ducks in the water. So far, there's been no official explanation about how these animals died.

  Let's go back to 2010 when construction was about to begin on the project. On another walk, I came across mountains of debris and trash that had been illegally dumped on this site. Not sure how long it had been there, but there definitely were hazardous materials included amongst the hundreds of tires. I videotaped what I saw, and I'm glad I did. Attica! Attica! Attica!

 
There's one in every crowd. Attica residents showed up to a town meeting to complain about a strong odor coming from a recycling landfill. The company said it was decaying food a few months ago. Now, plastics emanating from the ground appear to be smoking.

Check out the wackjob at 1:24 of this clip. He protested outside of the meeting wearing a full asbestos suit. He even kept the gas mask on during the channel IV interview. Why doesn't he just admit it? While he might be concerned about the gasses floating around in town, he really just wanted an excuse to dress up and show off his space suit. Fast forward to 1:23 and give him his wish...

Media circus descends on LeRoy

Information is slowly coming out of the Genessee County town of LeRoy. The only thing certain so far is that Erin Brockovich has probably undergone breast implant surgery...


School officials in the Genessee County town of LeRoy are not big fans of the environmentalist/celebrity Erin Brockovich. Brockovich and her band of scientists broke onto school grounds, with cameras in hand this week to test the soil for contaminants. The district was forced to call local law enforcement to keep the talking heads off school property.

"It is appalling that whatever group or entity employing [Brockovich's workers], as well as the media outlets participating in this effort, chose to conduct themselves in this way -- which can only be characterized as grandstanding," Cox said.

Brockovich points to a plume, or underground lake, from a 1970 toxic railway spill, which she claims is lying directly underneath the school. The derailment involved a spill of cyanide crystals and carbon tetrachloride...

She contended that a plume from the 1970 toxic railway spill had spread to within "close proximity" of the school. She noted that the school had been built on a swamp and that there were gas-extraction installations under the school's ball field.

Environmental investigator Bob Bowcock gets points for his inflammatory rhetoric, labeling the whole 1970 incident a huge government coverup...

In a statement to the media Saturday, Bowcock said: "The people of Le Roy need to know they have the largest TCE plume in the eastern United States under their community, and the government has given them lip service for 40 years, telling them, 'We've cleaned it up. We've cleaned it up. We've looked at this. We've done that,' and, frankly, I'm here to tell you they haven't done a darn thing," Bowcock said, referring to the chemical spill.

LeRoy Superintendent Kim Cox disputes this claim, saying Bowcock is full of crap. The plume, according to her, had actually moved in the opposite direction, directly underneath a farm on the other side of town, the birthplace, coincidentally, of several two headed calves...

"There are also some who are attempting to marry the 1970 derailment to the school, when in fact the plume has been shown as moving in the opposite direction some three miles away," she said.

I don't think anyone really knows what is going on here. If I were a betting man, I would guess the whole strep infection thing has something to do with it. In any event, School Superintendent Kim Cox and Erin Brockovich are planning a celebrity boxing match for tomorrow night in the school gym at 7PM.

What this case really points out is how much we distrust our government in 2012.

Toxic Tifft Farms

Here is some more footage I collected today next to the Union Ship Canal. I'm still trying to find out who owns the land. The politicians have been shown the tape. Next step is to contact some of the news media. Here is some asbestos along with countless tires along a dirt road. The next clip is a body of water filled with tires and aspestos. At the top is a sign I encountered while walking. I'm not sure if it's publicly or privately owned land. Anyone's information would be greatly appreciated.

Is everyone aware of this?

Whenever I bring my camera with me, I always end up finding some unexpected footage. I went over by the new road across from Tifft Farms (the Union Ship Canal) hoping to film deer or maybe a coyote. The area now is somewhat of an office park surrounded by woods and railroad tracks.

Everyone has been to the trails over at the nature preserve but I thought it would be interesting to check out the area by this new road. Since there are less people (than at the nature preserve), I figured there might be more animal sightings. I went out about an hour before dark. I was shocked at what I saw over there and I think you will be too. Watch this video and see what is back there. Tires, household garbage, garbage bags filled with what looks like hazardous waste.Look especially at the pile of garbage at 1:36. I'm not looking to point fingers with this footage. Just trying to get people talking and hopefully get this stuff removed. If anyone knows who might be responsible for this, please comment underneath this story.
