Hey, you never know
The New York co-worker who regularly played in the office pool opted out on the night they had the winning ticket according to an Albany, N.Y., deli owner who knows the winners.
"They asked him a couple of times, and he didn't feel lucky," said Jill Cook, owner of Cook's Deli, where the group often comes for lunch.
She said she heard the news through buzz from the nearby office, adding that she felt "terrible" for the man..

International update: Columbia
Christopher Jacome, a 17-year-old Colombian soccer fan, was gunned down while playing the game. He was a fan of the Cucuta Deportivo Colombian soccer team. After his wake, friends from "Barra del Indio" took the cadaver from the funeral home and paraded it around and then into the stadium in an attempt to pay homage to the slain soccer fan.
Officials say a crowd of 200 to 300 fans stormed into the stadium with the body creating an uncontrollable situation. The boy was a member of 'Barra del Indio,' a particularly aggressive Colombian soccer fan club.
No word yet on whether they charged him the regular admission price. Strange...

Prom Dress Drive
BUFFALO, NY ( WKBW ) Prom season is just around the corner, and that means a night of glitz and glamor for high school girls in Western New York.
However there are some girls who can not afford all that goes with the prom, and need some help picking up a dress.
From what I understand, they have even found someone to help clean the dresses for free, also. Please help spread the word. I'm sure most people know someone that has an old dress they can donate. Just think about how happy you will make some local girl. Hopefully, their prom experience will turn out better than the one in this clip: "They're all going to laugh at you, Carrie." Well, guess who had the last laugh? Carrie's mom was a pretty easygoing, laid back parent...

Florida snakes multiplying
Record freezes and a fearsome drought have failed to kill off the Burmese pythons that have colonized the Everglades Six of the non-native, constricting snakes were found last week in sections of the Everglades in which they had not turned up before, including an area north of Alligator Alley. This further dashed hopes by scientists that the past winter's cold weather could kill off the snakes, which are native to the warmer climate of southern Asia.
First the Florida pythons, then the New York City alligators under the sewers. What's next? If scientists really want to get rid of the snakes, forget St. Patrick or the pied piper. They need to contact this guy immediately...

Walker was shot in the stomach and left leg. He jumped into a vehicle and was then dropped off at 1459 South Park and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Hell in a hand basket
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — What does hell mean to you? Is it an endless nightmare for sinners and unsaved souls, as mainstream Christianity has taught for centuries? Or is hell here on Earth, in the distractions, addictions and emptiness of daily life?
Those ideas are receiving fresh scrutiny from some believers after a prominent evangelical pastor questioned the traditional idea of hell in his new book, "Love Wins."
Even before Rob Bell's book was published this month, religious leaders and their followers were branding it heresy, hailing it as a breakthrough or landing somewhere in the middle. Thousands have weighed in on Twitter, Facebook, blogs or outside their places of worship.
Bell "better go back and read his Bible again! He's all messed up!" wrote Ruth Ward of New Albany, Ind., on Facebook. "Satan is having a field day."

You can check out any time you like...
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway, I heard the mission bell
Then I was thinking to myself this could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor I thought I heard them say

Random thoughts from the ghetto-Volume 44
I look out my window and see the empty 40 oz beer bottles, hypodermic needles, crack pipes and abandoned shopping carts on my front lawn and begin to think. The end results have become known as my random thoughts from the ghetto...
-Out of the four girls' teams we have playing winter travel soccer, two have no losses and one has only one loss (after 10 games each). Life is good in the ghetto.
-I was watching a documentary on the hunt for bin Laden the other night. They said we had him pinned at the Battle of Tora Bora. A high level military guy said he wanted to send in thousands of US troops to capture him. Instead, the higher ups decided to use Pakistani and Afghan troops. In total, the man said only 60 US soldiers were sent out. I'll bet you someone is kicking themself over this one. Needless to say, bin Laden "escaped" over the mountains and into Pakistan. Afghan and Pakistani warlords are not known for their trustworthiness.
-If you're a man under 50 and you were deeply upset over the death of Liz Taylor, chances are you are really into fashion.
- One of the funniest things I ever witnessed was a Bingo game at the American Legion Post #64. It was the last game (the cover all). A woman won $100 and everyone began scrambling for the exits. When they were checking her numbers, apparently one hadn't been called. It was not a "good bingo". You should have seen these old ladies and men with walkers knocking each other over to get back to their seats. Total chaos. It was like a football game ending on a defensive penalty, and the referees had to bring all the players back onto the field from the locker room. Someone else won on the next number, I heard a half dozen old ladies use profanity, and the mass exodus began once again.
-I wonder what Lance Ito is up to these days?
-I only have 22 channels so I watch a great deal of documentaries on my computer at night. I was watching ESPN's 30 in 30 on the murder of Columbian soccer player Andres Escobar after the 1994 World Cup. Escobar had scored an own goal (he deflected a pass into his own net) against the US, causing the Columbians to be eliminated from the tournament. Own goals are not that uncommon. The game at that level is so fast. If he hadn't been tracking back as hard as he was, an American forward would have probably had a great scoring opportunity anyway. The judge sentenced his killer to 43 years in prison. He was released after 11 years. I take it the judge wasn't too happy with the outcome of the match, either.
-I read where New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg rides the subway every morning so he can be like his fellow New Yorkers. Maybe, we'll get lucky and someone will push him into one of the trains.
-One of the motors on my car windows broke last week, preventing it from going up, so I had to tape a plastic cover in it's place. I had three people ask me if one of my readers threw a rock at the window because of this blog. The price of fame?????
-That's all I got this week. I'll leave you with a scene from the movie Taxi Driver. Most people have seen DeNiro's famous "You talkin' to me?" scene. This is a scene where DeNiro's character (Travis Bickle) is becoming unhinged. He realizes he is about to lose it, so he seeks advice from a veteran cabbie known as "the wizard". "That's about the dumbest thing I ever heard." "Relax, killer. You're going to be alright." Martin Scorcesse is a genius...

Lions Club all star basketball game
Lions Clubs International was founded in the United States on June 7, 1917 by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman. Jones asked, with regard to his colleagues, "What if these men who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?" Jones' personal code, "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else," reminds many Lions of the importance of community service.
The Lions motto is “We Serve.” Focal Lions Club programs include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and other programs. The Lions Club of Cheektowaga has sponsored a high school basketball all star game for girls for the past several years. The President of their organization is Dan Cassaci. Cassaci's brother Vito is a longtime volunteer with the South Buffalo Football organization. Dan Cassaci reports that the group was approached a few years ago to switch the event and make an all boys game the main focus. Knowing that the Lions Cub already sponsored the WNY high school football game in August, the club decided to keep the focus of the basketball game on the girls.
Last night at the pregame banquet, Bishop Timon graduate Mike Walton delivered the keynote speech. The girls were given embroidered bags along with their game uniforms. Congratulations to the WNY Lions Club for their great commitment to the visually impaired and for supporting WNY high school athletes. Because of them, many girls in WNY are given the opportunity to have their talents highlighted for the whole community to see.

Pridgen blasts School Board
Buffalo Common Councilmember Darius Pridgen is rightly outraged. People in the city need jobs. The teacher who lives in the city is going to add to his/her street. They will shop at the neighborhood supermarket and contribute to the local economy. From my experience in organizing youth sports, I can say many teachers have served as great volunteer coaches for their own kids, also. If the children in the city don't have teachers on their streets to look up to as role models, they will model themselves after the gang leaders and drug dealers that we know are on their streets. The taxpayers of Buffalo are the employers for the Buffalo Schools. They have a right to decide whether this is a good law or not. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to go to the beach in Hamburg (Oh wait, I can't. It's for Town residents only.)...

City ambassador moves to Orchard Park-Fail
But the longtime city advocate just spent even more to buy a new mansion -- in the suburbs.
Croce paid $1.2 million Tuesday to buy a 12,800-square-foot home in the Summit at Scherff subdivision in Orchard Park.
"I'm a city resident. I'm a city voter. This is where my base is," Croce said. "But this gives my family a chance to do what families do."
And what is it that families around here do? Move out of the city. Sorry, Mark. When you buy an expensive home in Orchard Park, you no longer are a city resident. You see, a city resident is somebody who actually resides in the city.
If he wants to live in the suburbs, it is Croce's choice. However, it runs in sharp contrast to the image Croce has tried to create for himself. I also don't feel he should be allowed to continue voting in the city. I know it's only one vote. However, I think city issues and candidates should be chosen by city residents only. I can't vote in Orchard Park...
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...

Buffalo schools to hire less Buffalo residents
The resolution, sponsored by School Board President Ralph Hernandez, narrowly passed, 5-4. It will allow the district to choose from a larger pool of teacher candidates, while eliminating the requirement that teachers, with some exceptions, must live in the city or risk losing their jobs.
The resolution included an amendment by board member Rosalyn L. Taylor that will give job applicants who opt to live in Buffalo a “10-point hiring preference” added to their hiring score. A second resolution asks the district to “create incentives” that encourage teachers to live in the city.
So now, all the 3rd generation South Buffalo political hacks living in West Seneca and Hamburg, can call their uncle and get hired in Buffalo. This is no different than the way it's been anyway. The "10 point hiring preference" is a complete smokescreen, when you take into account the Keanes and Comerfords, etc all start with a "100 point hiring preference". You can't fight city hall, but you sure can expose the corrupt people in it. And I look forward to doing so.
I wonder if the "incentives" are going to be the same ones the city used in the 90s' to keep all the police and firefighters living in Buffalo. We know how well that worked out for the city. They practically gave them new houses in the city, which most turned around and resold at a profit (before moving their families to Orchard Park!)
The sad part is, I personally know at least 7 city residents who would be excellent physical education teachers. They have the degrees. They just don't have the money to bribe the people controlling the hiring.

Buffallo's history takes a back seat to greed
James Comerford, the city’s permit and inspections commissioner, had ordered the demolition at 339 Ganson St. earlier this month, claiming that the Wheeler elevator, the complex’s oldest building, and an adjacent feed mill posed a threat to public safety.
The company’s intentions fueled skepticism among Buffalo Preservation Board members about whether the buildings needed to be torn down. The board voted unanimously March 3 to oppose demolition after a request to schedule a site visit for the board and possibly an engineer was rebuffed.
I'm not going to publicly accuse "East Aurora" Jim of accepting a bribe from the company to tear down the grain elevators. However, if you see any drastic improvements on his East Aurora home this summer, well, you draw your own conclusions. Buffalo: a great place to siphon money and get all your family members public sector jobs. But I wouldn't want to live there. Very sad, residency violator!...

NT bus driver cleared of all charges
The students in North Tonawanda accused their bus driver of showing them inappropriate pictures from his cell phone. After confiscating his phone and examining it's contents, the police revealed there was never anything inappropriate on it.
Later, they realized none of the kids' stories matched and that three of them had been suspended from the bus a week earlier for discipline reasons. Oops. You would think they would have thought of that before they stole the man's phone and looked at pictures of how he spent last weekend. If I was him, I'd be driving my bus to the lawyer's office tomorrow morning...

Buffalo News reduced to tattle tails
The billboard’s location within 660 feet of the Thruway requires a permit from the Thruway Authority that Paladino’s company has not obtained, according to Thruway Authority spokeswoman Betsy Feldstein.
“The sign you’re referring to is not currently permitted by the Thruway Authority,” she told The Buffalo News.
And this is newsworthy how? I can just see Donny Esmonde approaching Stanley Lipsey (because Esmonde strikes me as a whining pathetic tattle tail).
(Esmonde):"Mr Lipsey! I hear Paladino doesn't have a permit for that terrible billboard he put up near the Thruway! I think we should do a story about it and make him look bad!"
(Lipsey):"You know, little Buddy. That is a wonderful idea. Then, we can have it taken down and that evil man will go away forever, and we can get back to pushing our political agenda, without anyone questioning it. Donnie, you're a genius! Can you come into my office and rub my shoulders like you used to?"
(Esmonde): "Sorry Mr. Lipsey. Congressman Higgins asked me first! But I'll be back tomorrow."
The article then claims to know Paladino's reasons for putting up the billboard...
The billboard currently attacks The News with a sign that reads: “Spineless Stan Lipsey & The Buffalo News threw WNY under the bus.” Paladino posted the sign in December, angry that The News endorsed Andrew
M. Cuomo for governor instead of him and because the newspaper also accepted advertising on behalf of the Democratic candidate.
I don't think Paladino really cared that the News accepted advertising on behalf of Cuomo or that they endorsed him. In fact, many people in Western New York (including Paladino) considered the News' endorsement process a sham and the "kiss of death".
Perhaps Paladino was upset that the News wrote several unflattering stories about him, yet never mentioned Cuomo's controversial tenure at HUD or anything from Cuomo's highly suspect, personal life.
It's hilarious that the News is even spending one minute on the billboard. What's so funny, is that most citizens had forgotten about it. They drive by every day and it has become as familiar as a Cellino & Barnes ad. Now the News, with this childish and vindictive article, has succeeded in making the billboard a topic of conversation once again. Is Lipsey such an insecure wuss, that he even cares about something so trivial? Oh, no. I hope his feelings aren't hurt. Don't cry out loud, Stanley...

Gang with knives, bottles attacks man on Seneca St.
A gang of eight to 10 believed to be wielding knives and broken beer bottles attacked a man about 4 a.m. Saturday on the 2000 block of Seneca Street.
The victim, Joseph Marinaro, whose age and address were not included in the police report, suffered multiple lacerations, the most serious of which extended from his left side to his back.
He was transported to Mercy Hospital and then Erie County Medical Center, and was discharged later Saturday after receiving treatment.

It's about time
Some state lawmakers have introduced a bill that would allow counties to hold a referendum on whether the state should be separated into upstate and downstate.
The measure has gone nowhere in the Legislature and most likely never will, but Sen. Joseph Robach, R-Greece, Monroe County, and Assemblyman Stephen Hawley, R-Batavia, Genesee County, have submitted it again this year, saying the idea is something that voters should be allowed to weigh in on.
I, for one, am all for this if it rids us of Sheldon Silver once and for all. If it does happen, Lackawanna should immediately be named the new state's capital city and the official state fish should be the Cazenovia Creek "suckerfish" ...

Attack of the 1st grader
One of Dr. Williams 563 Associate Superintendents is apparently unhappy with union president Phyllis Rumore's comments regarding the school 33 teacher attacked with a garbage can (by a 1st grader)...
Associate Superintendent Will Keresztes fired off a letter to union president Philip Rumore on Saturday, after Rumore told The Buffalo News that the child, depending on his age, should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The student was 6 years old, Keresztes said.
“You purposefully did not disclose the age and grade of the student in order to better portray the student as a criminal,” Keresztes wrote. “The student was a first-grader with a disability.”
A teacher at School 33 Bilingual Center fell to the floor and was injured Friday after the special-education student picked up a trash can and threw it at her, The News reported.
When I covered the story last week, I thought the student was older. However, getting hit with a trash can will hurt, regardless of the thrower's age. The question I have is: If the student was just taken off a bus due to an outburst, why would the teacher turn her back on him? A good teacher always keeps their eyes on the students, especially those students prone to poor behavior. We actually have footage of the teacher after she was attacked by the 1st grader...

St. Patrick's Day parade
What I can't stand are the people that want to be seen marching in the parade. Anyone living in South Buffalo knows a few of the people I'm talking about. The politicians and other Hollywood types. One of our ghost writers sent in this response to yesterday's parade post that I thought was very funny. I hope you do, too. I can admit when someone's a better writer than I...
Great comment! So true. The "look at me, I'm special and my family are important" crowd love these weeks in March. All the local politicians leave their winter retreats in Florida every year at this time, just so they can try and be more "Irish" than their opponents. Trouble is, most couldn't find Ireland on a map, and the real know-it-alls who think they can since they can speak a few lines of Gaelic, and because they send their daughter to "Irish dancing," wouldn't have a clue what real Irish people think. They should just call this time of the year--Shamrock Run Day to Parade Day--the dreadful two weeks you have to endure some of the biggest a-holes and most shallow phonies on the planet. Such a shame, because it seems like a fun time of the year everywhere else but here.
From what I hear, the parade got a little wild this year. As luck would have it, we have the footage...

South Buffalo girls becoming used to winning
It was a great weekend for our girls travel soccer teams. The girls are really starting to become passionate about the game. They went 5-0 this weekend at the Epic Center and Sportsplex. Each town puts the best girls from their programs onto travel teams that compete at these venues during the winter.
The girls from South Buffalo defeated Amherst, Grand Island, Clarence, Akron, and Tonawanda respectively this week. When we play in a u12 division, our 11 and 12 year olds compete almost exclusively against teams made up of all 12 year olds. Our 8,9, and 10 year olds play against entire teams of 10 year olds. Despite the age difference, three of our teams are currently in first place near the end of the regular season.
If you know any of the girls in our program, they will tell you how much they practice on their own (as well as with their team). In my opinion, the girls from the other clubs play often, but only a few of the players on these teams are passionate about the game. I don't think this is the case with our girls. I believe most of them spend considerable amounts of time with the ball. And it's starting to show. Back to the drawing board tomorrow. Congratulations to the girls for all of their hard work...

Teacher assaulted at school #33
Teacher taken to hospital following incident with student
An elementary student at School 33 Bilingual Center picked up a trash can and threw it at his teacher, knocking her to the floor this afternoon, authorities said.
The special education teacher, who suffered bruises and other injuries, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, according to Philip Rumore, president of the Buffalo Teachers Federation.
Initial reports said the teacher had been knocked unconscious, but that turned out to be untrue, Rumore said.
The special education student had been acting out earlier in the day and "had to be carried off the school bus into the school," the union president said.
I almost went to school 33 the other day, too. Why couldn't this have happened to me? I'd claim injury and emotional distress and seek millions. I'd be driving around in Superintendent Williams' car. Stuff like this happens every day in Buffalo. The district just does a great job of covering them up. We obtained this bootleg footage of a recent incident at one of the schools...

What would happen at a normal workplace if employees were caught leaving work four hours early? If it was at my last job, they would have been immediately terminated. Acting on a tip, A Buffalo police detective showed up at 10:30PM to check on six police officers, whose shift was supposed to end at 2AM. None were there. And then you hear some talking about a shortage of manpower??? It will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Mike BoyGeorge is working on it as we speak...
Four Central District police officers and two lieutenants were suspended Thursday pending formal internal disciplinary charges after they allegedly skipped out of work early Wednesday night, law enforcement sources revealed to The Buffalo News.
Authorities from the Buffalo Police Internal Affairs Unit led by Deputy Police Commissioner Byron C. Lockwood, acting on a tip, arrived at the Central District station in the Theater District at about 10:30 p. m. and found the six were not at work, the source said. Their shifts ended at 2 a. m.
It was determined they had left early in what is colloquially known in the department as a “slide” — when a supervising officer releases subordinates prior to the end of their shifts.

“The progress we see today and the work continuing this spring was made possible through the tenacity of Senator Kennedy, who made this initiative a priority and fought for its success every step of the way”, said his royal High Pants.
“The revitalization of South Park Avenue is making a significant impact on South Buffalo’s economy and on neighborhood morale. This project is an example of what can be accomplished when the community works together to achieve a collective goal,” said County Legislator Timothy J. Whalen. “We’re seeing progress in South Buffalo, but our efforts are just beginning. I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues who helped make this project happen – especially Senator Kennedy, Congressman Higgins and Mayor Brown – to help grow our economy.”

New York's Mayor Burns
NEW YORK (AP) - A new poll says New York City voters are unhappy with Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday says that 51 percent of voters interviewed disapprove of the job Bloomberg is doing. Those who approve are at 39 percent.
