Some people call her Whitey. Others Snowflake. I got these photos of an albino deer in East Aurora. I especially like the one in the snow.
WIVB also did a story on the deer, which was recently passed over for a promotion with the East Aurora Volunteer Firefighters because of it's skin color...
WGRZ did an interesting story about the exploding whitetail deer population in WNY. According to one of the experts, the deer began migrating north from the Southern Tier 50 years ago, adapting to changing landscapes there.
A recent aerial survey spotted 77 deer over the Tifft Farms Nature Preserve in South Buffalo alone. And they are doing a number on the plants over there as well as at the Botanical Gardens...
Was looking for the elusive coyotes, but caught this brief deer scuffle on the Hopkins Street hill this morning. Watch as the one deer stands on her hind legs and tries to box another deer...
I filmed these wild turkeys under a bridge along the waterfront the other day. When I got closer to them, they flew away (about 30 yards). To quote Les Nessman, I never knew turkeys could fly. Anyway, I got a pretty good shot of them before they did...
On an evening walk behind Hillary Park, I got a good shot at these three deer enjoying the nicest spring night we've had so far...
I've had several vicious stories lately, so here's a kinder, gentler one. From my stunt double Andy Parker at channel 2: Usually, this time of year, the male goose stands guard against predators, while the mother goose stays in the nest with the offspring. This female goose at a local Buffalo cemetery, lost her mate (he's probably smart and stayed somewhere warm.) A deer has taken on the role of her guard, it seems.
Some residents and animal rights activists are upset that deer at a Williamsville cemetery are being impaled when they attempt to jump over a spiked fence. The cemetaries caretakers say the fence is historic and should not be altered. What does this all mean? It means they don't have too much going on these days in Williamsville.
Both sides are missing an easy solution to this problem. Simply talk to the deer and see where they stand on the issue...
I filmed these deer today near South Park Lake by the Botanical Gardens. The reason the camera shakes a little is because I had to zoom in on the deer to get a closer shot. This footage pretty much sums up the type of winter we've had in Western New York. It's been a cold one. If you click the wildlife link at the bottom of the post, you can see some other creatures I've filmed in Erie County...
In addition to the Wegman's incident, this deer got disorientated on Route 5 by the old steel plant. It ran around on the road until it found an opening in a fence in the town of Woodlawn. Here is a picture that a motorist took...
I came across this video when I posted my clip of the deer on Abby Street. It shows a mother and a fawn on a suburban lawn (where I'm not sure). The mother deer is initially friendly to the neighborhood cat but has a different reaction to the family dog, when he gets a little too close to the fawn. (Be forewarned: it's pretty violent.)
I filmed this buck on Abby Street last night. There was very little lighting but the deer was surprisingly close. I hope people aren't feeding them. I'd hate to see them lose their natural fear of humans. This deer didn't seem to mind that I pulled up right next to him.
I thought this was pretty cool. From today's Buffalo News: the Murray family of Clarence took a picture of this white deer in their backyard. I'd go out there with my camcorder but with my luck, I'd probably end up running it over with my car on Goodrich Road. Whoa!A deer—a snow-white deer: Family’s rare find - City & Region - The Buffalo News
Check out the size of these antlers on the bucks I filmed by the Coast Guard along the waterfront yesterday. At first, I thought they might be fake (like the ones the police put up to catch illegal hunters). They looked too perfect. On closer examination, they turned out to be real...
It was kind of a boring news night. Not much to report. I spotted this big herd of deer tonight on Hopkins St. (just over the hill).I counted 10 of them. They really blend in well to their surroundings. There were quite a few of them and cars were driving right by unaware of them (until they spotted a nerd with a camcorder).
Filmed these deer snacking on some grass on Mineral Springs by South Ogden. Sorry about the annoying noise in the background. I had to turn on my flashers because there was no shoulder to park on. I guess it has an unintentional 60 Minutes vibe to it (sounding like a ticking clock).
I bought a camcorder yesterday at the store. I finally figured out how to set it up around 5 o'clock this afternoon and went over to Tifft Farms to look for something to film. I got some good shots of some bucks behind the warehouses on the new road across from the playing fields. I apologize for all of the shaking of the camera in the beginning of the video. It is my first camcorder. I will divert all animal related questions to Pat Herbert, resident wildlife expert. Not sure how many points are on these bucks. In the second clip, if you wait until 0:40, there is a good close up shot of one of them. There were three different bucks in the same spot and around twelve females. Unlike your average South Bflo. bar where there are three females for every 20 males.
I see turkeys, coyotes, deer, etc. all the time around here. Hopefully, I'll be able to film them in your backyard and post them on this site. With my luck, I'll spot a bear or a giraffe walking down South Park Avenue and my battery will be dead.
