I agree with Brian Higgins that the Skyway needs to come down. What I found funny about this story on channel 2 was that two years ago, Mickey "King of all Studies" Kearns called for, you guessed it, a STUDY by the DOT. Can't this guy (Kearns)make a decision without making someone else culpable?
Shocking. This monstrosity needs to come down. It costs money every time they close it due to poor weather. Also, tearing down the Skyway would help open up the waterfront even more. Why put tons of money into repairing something most people agrees time has passed?

Accident waiting to happen

I want to say first that I like most of the changes down by the waterfront. The bike trails are nice and there seems to be more accessibility. I'm glad Doug's Dive is still open, even if the food is overpriced. One thing I'm not too high on is the end of Tifft Street. It just doesn't seem like it was designed properly. I haven't talked to one motorist that likes the circle they put up. It seems like you can't see the cars coming from the opposite direction.
I have to question the intersection pictured here in front of Gallagher (formerly known as Welfare Beach). We have three one way roads to our right(the middle road is the entrance to the skyway). If you don't take it everyday, it's hard to tell which way you can go. Since people are taught to veer to the right, it seems like the road closest to you would be the entrance. I'd hate to see someone take this road and go the wrong way. I know there are signs, but there are so many signs it could easily confuse an elderly driver or someone from out of town. The first time I got to this intersection, I wasn't sure which way to go, and others have told me the same thing.

Accident on skyway
How many accidents do there have to be before people realize the Skyway needs to be replaced? It is constantly shut down during the winter and people often drive the wrong way on it causing serious injuries. Higgins and Kennedy. What are you waiting for? Hold one of your stupid press conferences and shut it down...

Removing the skyway
Councilmember Kearns is proposing to have another study on the cost of removing the Skyway. Congressman Brian Higgins is opposed to another study and says the cost of removing it will be about $45 million.
Everyone seems to agree that it needs to go. It is unsafe and a barrier to progress on the waterfront. What's funny in this clip is the tension displayed by Higgins. (Maybe the blog is getting to him.) He says at one point, "We encourage those around us to work constructively." I'd like to know who he means by "we". Since Kearns was elected after beating Higgins' handpicked yes man (Jeff Conrad), Higgins has excluded Kearns from one press conference after another. He invites Mark Schroeder and Tim Kennedy but not Kearns. To Schroeder's credit, he has reached out to Kearns and has tried to stay above the fray. Higgins doesn't want Kearns' input on the waterfront because then Kearns might get credit for any improvements.
To hear Higgins imply Kearns needs to work constructively as part of a team is laughable. Why would he work to be part of your team when you've excluded him from your team from day one? Here is the story from Channel 2. Decide for yourself:
