International update: Indonesia

 Tori Smoking Orangutan
If you had a rough weekend, maybe this will cheer you up. It's an orangutan in Indonesia who can't stop smoking. People at the zoo throw their half lit cigarettes near his enclosure and he mimics the humans he sees and casually smokes. In this clip, he is even seen lighting a cigarette with another one.

Zookeepers are doing everything they can to end the practice. Not sure if they've tried the patch yet?

Electronic cigarettes

If you're a smoker who's trying to quit, you might find the attached NY Times' article interesting. Some small studies are finding electronic cigarettes beneficial in helping smokers to quit or reduce their smoking habits.

The vapors released give addicts (let's face it, that's what they are) the nicotine they crave without the harmful carcinogens and toxins found in cigarettes. Anti-smoking groups argue that abstinence is the best method of quitting. There seems to be a concerted effort against electronic cigarettes, however. And this has other groups taking notice...

In Britain, the Royal College of Physicians has denounced “irrational and immoral” regulations inhibiting the introduction of safer nicotine-delivery devices.

“Nicotine itself is not especially hazardous,” the British medical society concluded in 2007. “If nicotine could be provided in a form that is acceptable and effective as a cigarette substitute, millions of lives could be saved.”

If you're a smoker, I encourage you to read the following article and decide for yourself.

The future is now

Our cameras followed South Buffalo resident Brian Reiss to the Boulevard Mall. Reiss is ready to buy into the latest quit smoking fad-electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes are battery operated devices that provide inhaled doses of nicotine without the harmful tobacco tars.

Reiss is very excited about this scientific breakthrough and hopes to cure his other addiction when electronic crack comes out on the market.

International Update- Indonesia

Kids are starting to smoke and drink at a younger age. You might already have seen this video. Maybe the new cigarette tax isn't such a bad thing after all...
