Movie review: Movie 43

The Ninja dragged me out to check out a movie I had never heard of before. Now I know why. Movie 43 was the worst film I've seen in over a decade. Directed by Peter Farrely, the movie is a series of short clips, each one more annoying than the last.

The movie was extremely gross, but not in the funny way There's Something About Mary was. Think of the worst Saturday Night Live skits imaginable and then add disgusting sophomoric lines to them. Some of the actors were so horrible, I saw a guy two rows behind me puking in one of the theater garbage cans. Nothing against the Ninja. I was glad to get out of the house and he thought the movie was a serious movie about modern times. But it was supposed to be a comedy, and you could count the number of times the other 5 people in the audience laughed on one hand. A strange attempt at humor. I give it a 1/2 of a star (out of 5 stars).

Classic movie scenes: The Godfather

I was at McDonald's at 1AM tonight with the Ninja. Working nights can be tough as you're wide awake when the civilized world is sleeping. I ran into the Godfather's son coming in for his nightly cup of coffee.

A Buffalo police officer, he has been known to check in for his late night coffee. After offering him some delicious ribs from another restaurant, I made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Unfortunately, he did.

I asked him if he'd be interesting in moonlighting as an armed bodyguard for yours truly. When one speaks the truth, there are some amongst us who would like to see that person silenced. Back to the drawing board. Had he not refused, I'd envisioned him preventing tragedies like this from occurring...
(Warning:very graphic content)

Michael (Al Pacino) takes a gun he hid in the bathroom and blows away his enemies, McCluskey (the off duty cop/bodyguard) and Sollozzo (his rival crime boss).

Movie scene:Taxi Driver

The drummer in this scene from the movie Taxi Driver was a real New York City street performer. While filming the movie, Martin Scorsese walked by him one night and thought he'd add some realism to the movie. Always the romantic, this is also the scene where crazy Travis Bickle takes Cybil Sheppard out on their first date together (to a porno theater) unbeknown to her. Just a little bizarre...

Classic movie scenes: Rocky

"Don't you think I hear things? There are a lot of canaries flying around by the docks."

One of my favorite scenes from the first Rocky movie. Rocky's boss/Godfather wants to know more about the girl Rocky is taking out the next day.

Rocky:"You ought to count your blessings. You're still a healthy person."

Buddy:"I don't like your face."

Classic movie scenes:This is this

From The Deer Hunter: Robert DiNero and his hunting buddies go out on one last road trip before a few of them are sent off to Vietnam. Jon Cazale, who you might remember as Fredo Corleone from The Godfather, plays DiNero's immature, irresponsible friend, Stan. Once again, he shows up unprepared and DiNero tries to teach him a lesson. I think the acting in this movie (as well as the story itself) is what sets it apart from the garbage they put out these days. Cazale was in The Deer Hunter, The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Conversation (all nominated for Best Picture in their respective years). He died of Bone Cancer before The Deer Hunter was finished filming. He barely made it through his scenes in the movie, yet gave a typically great performance...

Teen Wolf

I spent $5.50 at the Seneca Mall expecting to see another Back to the Future film from Michael J. Fox. Instead, I got a movie about a high school student who turned into a wolf while playing basketball. The parents at the school remained silent the rest of the year? If your son/daughter was sitting next to a wolf in Chemistry class, don't you think it might be something you might want to bring up at the next PTA meeting?

Does #55 look familiar? You're damn right he does. You might recognize him as Francis Buxton III from Pee Wee's Big Adventure. When he wasn't stealing Pee Wee Hermann's bicycle, he was busy trying to get Michael J. Wolf the ball...

Poll: Worst movie sequel ever made

Going to see a movie sequel can be like stepping into a puddle on a cold day in January. You're feeling great and the moment you realize the new movie stinks, it's like a cold dose of reality strikes you. They can rarely recreate the magic of an original film (Superman II being the rarest of exceptions).

Please take the time to vote in the latest poll at the right on your screen. What is the worst movie sequel ever made? Some movies not making the list, but warranting serious consideration were Caddyshack II, Dumb and Dumberer, Weekend at Bernies II, Speed II, and Jaws 3D. However, I narrowed the choices down to six. If there is one you think should be on the list, feel free to mention it in the comments.

Juno

I saw the movie Juno the other day. I have to give it two thumbs up. It is a great movie about a 16 year old girl who becomes pregnant. The movie has been lauded by both the pro life and the pro choice movements. If you haven't seen it yet, I definitely recommend it. The actress who plays Juno gives a great performance, especially at the end of the film.

The music was really interesting, also. The movie ends with this remake of the classic Robert Plant song Sea of Love. I like this version and I hope you do, too...

Leslie Nielson dead at 84

Leslie Nielson dead? Surely, you can't be serious? I am serious. And don't call me Shirley. Nielson died today from pneumonia at the age of 84. He was best known for his roles in the classic movie Airplane! as well as The Naked Gun films. Nielson was Canadian and truth be told, I thought he died four years ago...

Rocky transformation

This is why I hate sequels. The original Rocky was a great story about a punch drunk boxer who finally got a second chance in life. Throughout the movie, his lack of communication skills were what made the character memorable and iconic.

Getting punched in the head too many times made him who he was. Here is the ending scene, where he goes the distance with the flamboyant Apollo Creed (reportedly modeled after Muhammed Ali)...

Fast forward to Rocky IV. All of a sudden, the guy who couldn't put two sentences together in Rocky I, is an articulate speaker. After he defeats the Russian, Ivan Drago, he delivers this speech which ends the Cold War once and for all. "If I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!"

Classic movie scenes-Peculiar

The guy in this scene (William Redfield) died a few months after the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest was released at age 49. You might recognize the man across from him (a young Christopher Loyd). He was the Reverend Jim Ignatowski on the TV show Taxi, as well as the mad scientist, Dr. Emmitt Brown, in Back to the Future. "Cheswick. Do me a favor.Take it easy and stay off my side."

Spicoli vs Mr. Hand

One of the best movies from the 1980s was Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Sean Penn played the California surfer Jeff Spicoli who was often at odds with his uptite and ultra- conservative History teacher Mr. Hand (Ray Walston). The exchanges between these two were great. Here are two scenes from the movie. In the first scene, Spicooli orders a pizza to the classroom:

Earlier in the movie, Mr. Hand warns the students not to waste his classroom time. He says,"You wouldn't want me come over to your house and discuss US history on your time, would you?" In this scene, he does just that, coincidentally, on the night of the senior dance. In the audio clip that follows, Spicholi uses surfer terminology to sum up US history...
