Ground Chuck Gets Scolded on Airplane

The sign behind this pompous weasel says it all.

Senator Chuck Schumer recently became upset when a member of a flight crew told him he needed to shut off his cell phone like everyone else. I guess he feels he should be above the rules. I'm better than you. I'm a senator. You can't tell me what I can do. What a jerk. Someone should have thrown this arrogant spoiled punk right off the plane in mid flight. It's laughable when these people try to masquerade as one of us. They are so out of touch with everyday working Americans, it's ridiculous.

Police Overtime for Home Makeover

I come after the leaders of the city when I feel it's appropriate but I'll defend them if I think they are doing the right thing. Some are complaining about the $63,000 in overtime it cost the city to provide police security for the Extreme Makeover television show. I think it's a good investment. I'm also glad Kiannu Reeves is shooting his movie here. To me, The Natural was one of the best things ever to take place in Buffalo. It also turned out to be a surprise hit with the critics. If the arts people could build on these two projects and make the city more appealing to the television and film industry, I think it's money well spent. You never know. If the producers feel welcomed, the word might get around that Buffalo is a friendly, cheap place to film. But that's just my opinion.

Never too Young to Give, Never too Old to Give Back

There were two stories in today's paper that I thought deserved mentioning. They were separate stories of Western New York residents making a difference in the community through their actions. Jessie Washington, a childless 61 year old Buffalo resident, instantly became a mother to 5 sisters who had been in foster care. "Now I know how a biological mother feels, because I can feel that same love. When they hurt, I hurt. I want them to have the best of everything — the best education, the best religious [upbringing], so they can be confident and know that somebody loves them, said Washington." She had hoped that the court date would be on December 16th, her father's 85th birthday. "It really is a sign to me that these were my children when they were born," she said. "It means [their birth mother] had these children for me."

It's not every day you read about a 61 year old woman saving the lives of five children. Gateway-Longview estimates there are over 1,000 children in Erie County in the system currently looking for a home.

Who says there is no such thing as Santa Claus? She's 8 years old. Her name is Madison Scott and she lives in Lockport. The 3rd grader started a fund drive to buy gifts for The News Neediest Fund. With the extra money she collects, she buys more gifts and makes a donation to the food bank of WNY. It started when she approached her parents and wanted to donate half of her presents to deserving kids who had less than she, according to the article by Deidre Williams.
Her true gift appears to be her ability to get others on board. She started getting her friends at her elementary school to donate presents through her. She started a newsletter and a blog to promote her gift raising efforts. Last year, she donated 400 toys and gave over $300 to the food bank. This year, Madison already has collected over 700 toys.

Two great stories about two Western New York heroes not sitting back waiting for someone else to make a difference. One younger. One older. Both doers. Here are the links to both articles.

Blogger's Nightmare

It's getting really crazy out there. The other day I was walking down Main St. I was looking down at the tumbleweeds beneath my feet, when I noticed a big commotion by the old Goldome bank. Keannu Reeves was walking around downtown doing some location scouting for his new film, and a crowd was gathering.

I'm not a big fan of Reeves but I thought it was my journalistic duty to report the sighting to all five of my readers. As I got closer, I noticed the crowd beginning to move towards me. I heard one beautiful Reeves fan yell, "forget Keannu. There's our local blogger!" Fearing for my safety without my security detail available, I began to run as fast as I could but the crowd was relentless and getting closer.

A cab was going by and I dove inside just ahead of the excited mob of toothless, Seneca brand smoking, chicken wing eating, jobless Buffalonians. The cab driver shook my hand and in a Polish accent said, "hi. I'm Jan Radecki. The face of Buffalo. Where do you want I to take you to go?" I said, "I don't care. Just get me away from these crazy fans and get me back to South Buffalo." He took out a baseball bat and said, "South Buffalo? You're not another one of those Kane boys. Are you?" For some reason, he then drove me to the Broadway Market and said,"this is the farthest south I go in Buffalo" and struck me with his bat. The next thing I remember, I woke up in a house on Smith St. My wallet was gone. Fortunately, because I'm a member of the unentitled class, the only thing missing was my library card and a "buy twelve haircuts, get the thirteenth one free" coupon from Supercuts. Such is the price of fame.

Oral Roberts (1918-2009)

Proving that only the good die young, Oral Roberts passed away today at the age of 91 in Newport Beach, California. His real first name, which he probably should have stuck with, was Granville. Roberts will best be remembered for having a college with a crappy basketball team named after him. He will also be forever known as the guy who said God would "call him home" if his church didn't meet it's fundraising goal of $8 million dollars in the mid 80s. He was able to raise $9.1 million dollars. Phew! Talk about a close call.

Roberts started out doing tent revivals as a traveling faith healer in the South during the late 70s. In 1983, Roberts claimed that Jesus had appeared to him in person and commissioned him to find a cure for cancer. He and his son also claimed that he raised a young boy from the dead, which I'm sure is a great trick to do at parties. I think this guy might have been on to something. We will be having a tent revival this coming Thursday from 5-7PM on the corners of Abbott and Potters Rd. If 200 people don't read this blog tomorrow, God will call me home.
I've obtained this rare footage of Oral Roberts healing a young boy named Billy Ray. I take back any bad thing I've ever said about him:

Blow Off Your Steam Recap-Volume 1

Just a brief, and I mean very brief, commentary on what has people upset and angry this week in The Metro Community News...

-Niko-Talks about how some scam artists use charities to steal your money (ie. stores asking you to give to the poor). He's right. I only give to someone that I know and know where the money is going. For example, the United Way hired Mary Martino. What kind of idiot would give them their hard earned money?

Joan-Thinks people drive too fast on Tifft St. She's right also, especially given the amount of deer on that road. I have seen police catch people speeding there on many occasions, though. I just drive in the right hand lane and let the idiots pass me.

Billie-Very upset at the Post Office. Her note was too long so I only read the beginning. Say it in fewer words next time Billie. Anyway, you don't want to make them mad at you at the post office. "Going postal" is not just an expression. It is a statement deeply rooted with examples. If they do get violent with you, I highly recommend you take a dive and call Cellino & Barnes or the Hurt line.

Lil- Wants the readers of the Metro Community News to explain Obama's Health Care plan. Sorry,Lil. Do you realize that most readers of that paper cannot figure out how to operate their remote controls, much less solve the health care crisis?

Deanna-Uses the word "homeboy" not once but twice in her article. She says Mickey Kearns is not her favorite Councilmen. She also blasts Jimmy Griffin, claiming the next two mayors have "cleaned up" after him. I'm not here to defend Griffin's record but I don't think the next two mayors are capable of cleaning themselves up after eating spaghetti. Deanna, you live in a dream world. Stop watching so much reality TV and start educating yourself more on the issues.

Marge-The 603rd time she wrote a self congratulatory article. Doesn't she realize that patting yourself on the back in South Buffalo is right up there with giving yourself your own nickname? She talks about her club as if it's privately funded. They get thousands of dollars from local elected officials and they have like six known members. It says in her article on some Christmas tree lighting that "Santa arrived in a Hollywood station fire truck." What she fails to mention is that all the kids ran and tackled County Legislator Tim Kennedy in an apparent case of mistaken identity. Marge will be out 3-6 weeks with a torn rotator cuff. She reinjured it while patting herself on the back yet again. Really, after reading that diatribe, I need to know what she smokes every day because it must be some very good stuff.

Legalized Prostitution

Just thought I'd relay this link to my readers. It is the list of everyone from the 14220 zip code (or people pretending to live in the 14220 zip code;hi Mr. Comerford) that donated to the campaign of Byron Brown. Most of the people on this list aren't looking for something in return. They are just honest people expressing their satisfaction with Mayor Brown's stellar first term in office. Again, this list isn't from an established website or anything. I just made it up. $48,469.00. Enough for mayor Brown to buy an extra car or two should his son decide to steal his again in the middle of the night.
One of the only things I've never been called is racist. I guess it's because I'm poor. Who knows? Who cares? What I find funny about this list, is the number of hypocrites on it. Not everyone. Believe it or not, I have friends on this list and I would not characterize them as racist. Some of these guys , however, are people that go to bars and talk derogatory about minorities when they're in their tight circle of friends. It's funny how things change when their spoiled kids are looking for city jobs or they want to move up on one of their prized " lists". One woman on this list once threatened to boycott a S. Bflo priest's masses if he went ahead and put a statue (or some kind of tribute) to Martin Luther King in their church (because she thought of it as an invitation for black Catholics to attend mass). Now, she's shaking hands with mayor Brown in some of his commercials! It's funny how your values change when you start to perceive yourself (falsely I might add) as being important. Fortunately, 99% of people are on to her dreadful act. Which is it? Make up your mind. If you're going to talk tough when you're out at the bars, back it up with your actions.

Who knew these people were capable of being so progressive? Maybe, as a society, we've evolved and "there's been a change of heart."

At Least They Have Manners

Crime is down. Just stay away from the Broadway Market area, Grider St, Seneca St. liquor stores, or downtown Buffalo. All four areas were hit with violent robberies on Friday alone. At least these two hoodlums were contrite...
Apologetic robbers spare no aggression

A man who was robbed of $30 in cash and his cell phone Friday in downtown Buffalo, just before midnight, also got something unexpected —an apology.
The victim, Buffalo police said, was accosted by two teenagers while taking a shortcut between the Hyatt Regency Buffalo and Pearl Street. One of the bandits had a gun and the other punched the man in the face.
“Sorry we have to do this, but we really need the money,” the man’s attacker told him.
The victim suffered a bloody nose and bruises to the head, police said.

Reminds me of this classic movie scene:

Mystery publication stirs anger in Lew-Port

Someone in Lewiston is writing a paper with funny pictures of local public figures. They also come after the local school board and talk about things that mainstream publications would never cover. Can you believe the nerve of some people? Some people just have too much time on their hands.
