Deep down, he knew she was right

0:45 seconds is the best part of this clip. I've probably seen the boy scout punch Felix Unger 1,000 times and still laugh every time.

Hey! Hey! Hey! It's a discrimination lawsuit

Our 1st Annual Mel Gibson Racial Sensitivity Award goes to the AIG boss who had a discrimination lawsuit filed against him this week by one of his lawyers. How do you move up the company ladder while completely lacking any sort of common sense?

In one instance, the suit says, Hornbostel asked Brown into his office, only to yell: "Hey! Hey! Hey! It's Fat Albert! Do you remember that cartoon!" Brown was the only African American in a group of 50 lawyers, according to the complaint. Hornbostel told his executive assistant, in front of Brown, to "take Earl with you" next time she needed to get documents signed by someone in the office, the suit says. "I'm sure with this brother behind you, he can scare anyone into signing quickly," the suit says Hornbostel told the assistant.

Regardless of your take on the lawsuit, this has to be one of the greatest TV theme songs of all time. Nah Nah Nah! Gonna have a good time!...

Letter to the editor: Bflo Public Schools

How come every time I cite a well written, truthful article from the Buffalo News, it's written by one of it's readers? Someone better tell this reader from East Aurora he needs to stop making so much sense. What would happen if we ever started being honest with ourselves regarding the problems facing the Buffalo Public Schools?...

Poor child rearing is root of problem

While fully granting that Assemblywoman Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes’ recent suggestion that New York State take over the Buffalo Public Schools is certainly well intended, the one thing that this drastic action would not do is instill much-needed higher moral values into the student body. Politicians, teachers and clergy can only work to undo what is already learned, be it lack of respect for authority, education or for each other.

Policy makers and pundits alike are historically reluctant to encroach upon parenting skills. This is delicate, taboo territory. Yet how our young adults behave in school, as well as in the world at large, is directly related to what they learn at home from their primary care givers. Now it seems that teachers are being held responsible for student apathy toward learning, which begins long before their public schooling.

Outrageous as it may sound and at the risk of sounding Orwellian, perhaps New York State should take over child rearing practices, which are at the very heart of this ongoing and troubling dilemma.

Dr. Manny

Manuel Carranza (credit: Handout/Nassau County Police)
This might be the greatest story ever. A Long Island man with a 6th grade education  was running a dental practice out of his house, performing root canals and extractions...

Carranza allegedly bought his dental equipment and tools on the Internet and did not keep anything sterilized, 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera reported.

“There could be some serious infections, with oral surgery, extractions,  root canals,” Dr. Ruth Randi said.
Police believe Carranza treated more than 100 people over a year and half. His attorney insisted Carranza had dental tools but did not practice.

If you hear your dentist hails from Honduras, it might be a good idea to check out the Western NY Dental Group...

“He has a price chart of $20 to $30 for fillings, $50 for root canal and if that doesn’t work then he’ll extract your tooth for free,” Cote said.

“He was making the big money from the dentures — upwards of $150 to $300,” Cote told CBS 2′s McLogan.

Coming home

Regardless of peoples' stance on the war, everyone agrees with the need to support our troops. We've all seen the clips on the news showing soldiers at the airport, becoming reunited with their loved ones. The following clip is making the rounds on the internet. It is one of a soldier returning home to his dog.

Maybe it's the size of the dog. Or it's nervous mannerisms. I think what makes the clip special is that it seems as though the dog knows where the man has been and is glad to see him. I just thought it was an interesting video...

Buffalo Schools protest

If you want a good laugh reading the Buffalo News, you don't have to read the comics. Sometimes interesting in his candidness, Rod Watson usually is good for some laughs when it comes to the Buffalo schools. In his latest column, he bemoans the fact that only 40 protestors showed up at Phil Rumore's office the other day. Perhaps they are waiting for a government program to hire full time protestors to show up in their absence?

Forty people, and I'll bet you half of them were the "Occupy Buffalo We'll protest anything with 15 minutes notice" type. Watson is surprised at the low turnout? How many parents does he think show up to parent/teacher conferences in the city of Buffalo? I've talked to some teachers who sit at their desk all day waiting for  one parent to show. Does he really think they're going to take time off from the Jerry Springer show to worry about their kids' education?

This parental impotence illustrates the bigger problem in the city, and it's one that millions of dollars won't fix: The majority of  students and the parents in the lower performing schools simply don't care! The ones who bother to show up are there more for social reasons than anything else. Disruptive students is an understatement at these schools. If you tell them to put away their phones (in class), they look at you as if you're speaking another language. And where does Watson think they learn this behavior from? From the Buffalo News...

“What we have now” clearly doesn’t work for most students, only about half of whom graduate on time. But it works great for teachers, who refuse King’s call to be held accountable for their ability to deal with challenging kids.

I got news for Watson. What we have now doesn't work great for teachers, either. The teachers I know from the struggling schools are stressed out from trying to raise other peoples' children for them. Challenging kids? Buffalo is forced to pay it's subs $30 more/day than the local suburban districts. It's not because the students are a little bit more "challenging." Watson loves to use  euphemisms like "challenging" and "sassing" to describe the behavior of these students. The people I know on the front lines who deal with the disrespectful ones use other words. Disruptive is usually high on the list.

The schools are a reflection of the community. What we have in Buffalo right now is a group of people who want other people to raise their children for them. That's why none of them show up to these protests. The schools and their kids are not their problem. You can throw $6 million or $600 million at the problem and it won't matter. Until the community itself (families) start taking education seriously, nothing will change.

Here's one parent who understands what is really taking place in the classrooms:
Waiting for miracle won’t fix the schools

Ridiculous prom policy in Philly

Amanda Doughtery
Even if it was their policy, wouldn't you think the diocese of Philadelphia would make an exception using a "common sense clause"? Amanda Daugherty, from Archbishop John Carroll High School bought a prom ticket for $95. She then spent another $1,000 on the dress. After all of this, her date backed out. Now, school administrators are telling her she can't attend this Friday because she doesn't have a date. Unbelievable. And these people call themselves Christians?

Amanda expressed her frustration to CBS Philadelphia: "For them to say we're not good enough to go without a guy next to us, that's kind of sickening."

So, the diocese has taken an already traumatic experience for this young lady (losing her date) and made it worse by telling her she can't attend. I'm all for adhering to rules, however, there has to be a point where common sense takes over. I think the Philadelphia diocese needs to take a step back and think about what their mission is supposed to be about. Regardless of their rationale here, they come across as looking very insensitive to the needs of the teenagers they are supposed to be serving...
This Girl Was Banned From Prom For WHAT?

Parent speaking the truth

There actually was a parent at the Buffalo School Board meeting tonight making sense. Roy Adams was placing the blame where it belongs, on the students and their parents. I'm sure his opinion won't be popular with parent's advocate Sam Radford, as it doesn't involve blaming teachers, administrators, or asking for government handouts. No, Adams is talking about the atrocious classroom behavior of many of the students at the lower performing schools in Buffalo...

Lackawanna politics

I agree with the residents of Lackawanna on this one. The number of polling places has been greatly reduced for the upcoming School Board election. In fact, there isn't a polling place near the "other" side of the bridge where 25% of the students live. They happen to be of Arab descent.

Last election,  this population elected Abdul Noman as a city Councilmember. Now, the city is trying to force these residents (many of whom are elderly and do not drive) to walk along busy Route 5 near the old steel plant to vote. They clearly are trying to suppress the vote from this neighborhood. This is a no-brainer and the city will lose out to democracy in this one...

Council majority borders on lunacy

Ever been in a Turkish prison? A Council hopeful has two prior arrests on his record and it's not even the most alarming part of the article...

Meanwhile, University Council Member Bonnie E. Russell said Monday that another candidate has the support of four of the eight remaining Council members.
Linda M. Bain, a registered nurse and founder of the Pomona Block Club, has Russell's support, along with that of Fontana, Smith and Ellicott Council Member Darius G. Pridgen, Russell said.

What this tells us is that these four Councilmembers have put politics ahead of South Buffalo residents. That they could sit through the interviews, listen to this nonsense, and then go with Linda Bain is a slap in the face to the residents and the entire process.(And I'm not even a Matt Fisher supporter). Please listen to this clip and judge for yourself. Rich Fontana, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You promised to put qualifications over politics and you are doing the exact opposite. The residents of this district get their news from many sources, not just The Buffalo News, and word travels fast. The following clip will have people in the neighborhood questioning your motives...

Meanwhile, back to Verel...

Buffalo Common Council should be part time

Is not having a representative on the Buffalo Common Council affecting your life? Mine either.

Outside of the annual city budget, they don't do anything that existing city departments don't already do. It makes me wonder why we are paying each of them $52,000, in addition to two full time staff members.

They are simply the middlemen between frustrated citizens and city hall department heads. Why not make them part time? They can actually go out and get regular jobs (I know this is hard for some people to comprehend). Replace them with two or three clerks who can put citizens in touch with the appropriate departments when a concern/complaint takes place? Seriously, what else do they do all day?

I haven't heard one resident yet tell me they have been affected by South Buffalo's current lack of "representation." The only thing the job of Councilman does is provide a full time salary to another politician. We simply would be better off with less of them.

International update: six limbed Pakistani baby

I had a cousin born like this. He's known as the second biggest freak of the family...

Farooq was born two weeks ago in Sukkur, a city in the southern province of Sindh, and was born to a couple who are cousins, according to the New York Daily News.

From what I hear, although this is new to Pakistan, multi limb births are common in Indonesia, Bangladesh, and certain parts of Riverside...

Classic movie scenes: The Godfather

I was at McDonald's at 1AM tonight with the Ninja. Working nights can be tough as you're wide awake when the civilized world is sleeping. I ran into the Godfather's son coming in for his nightly cup of coffee.

A Buffalo police officer, he has been known to check in for his late night coffee. After offering him some delicious ribs from another restaurant, I made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Unfortunately, he did.

I asked him if he'd be interesting in moonlighting as an armed bodyguard for yours truly. When one speaks the truth, there are some amongst us who would like to see that person silenced. Back to the drawing board. Had he not refused, I'd envisioned him preventing tragedies like this from occurring...
(Warning:very graphic content)

Michael (Al Pacino) takes a gun he hid in the bathroom and blows away his enemies, McCluskey (the off duty cop/bodyguard) and Sollozzo (his rival crime boss).
