In his syndicated column this week, Buddy the Book talks football, local politics, and about his distaste for the Buffalo News...

Recently, I had a conference call from Buddy reporting from sunny Miami FLA. Buddy indicated to me that this is a tough week. These are not strong plays for week 17. New England (-10) over MIami. This is a game that NE wants for some momentum headed into post season. New Orleans (-5) over Carolina. Saints bitter about bounty bowl suspensions. Pittsburgh (-6) over Cleveland. The bus door is wide open for these clowns. Dallas (+3.5) over Washington. This is a game that will decide the fate for Tony Romo and Jason Garrett. This is a classic rivalry game. The Jills vs Jets. Nobody cares! You should go play in a parking lot.

Its one of those opinionated days... BUT whatever happened to Andrew Rubdick and Stan Dipsey. These two so called "commnity leaders." Well- with these two Bufffalo Destroyers are off to greeener pastures. I know they loved "scamming" off Buffalo. Rubdick is gonna go into some sort of teaching at a local college?? I was thinking some substitute teaching right in the heart of Mobile Ala. This is right up is alley of giving back. Yeah Right! Let me miss these two job creators of this economically challenged area. Good job guys! 

It looks like the Ninj is going through some tough times. Recently, he was spotted walking up the "love bugs" mansion with a box of pizza and bucket of wings. The poor Ninj was in his classic sideways walk up the steps. The Ninj on any given sunday will pull out all stops. I mean "options"! BOING! 1-800 Bud-wins. This is not the Buffalo News. The Blogger is not "Dim Light"! There is no editing of Buddy the book's column.

You never know what might turn up on the Blog. I'm hoping Pete Rose had the common sense to fire his agent after appearing in this ad. Since he'll never be in the baseball Hall of Fame, they should locate his barber and place the bowl he used to cut Rose' hair and put that in Cooperstown.

You may have seen this one already. I found it fascinating. A math genius from India drew a puzzle on his deathbed that baffled scientists for almost 100 years. He said it had appeared to him in a dream (In my dreams, people are always chasing me)...

While on his death-bed in 1920, Ramanujan wrote a letter to his mentor, English mathematician G. H. Hardy, outlining several new mathematical functions never before heard of, along with a hunch about how they worked.

Decades years later, researchers say they've proved he was right - and that the formula could explain the behavior of black holes.

I've often wondered about the behavior of black holes myself. At the time of his death, most scientists thought Ramanujan was full of curry. Of course, he was eccentric and self taught ...

Ramanujan, a self-taught mathematician born in a rural village in South India, spent so much time thinking about math that he flunked out of college in India twice.

Ramanujan, a devout Hindu, thought these patterns were revealed to him by the goddess Namagiri.

 

 It just goes to show how little we really know about the human brain and why we should sleep more. Without possessing any of the tools of modern mathematicians, a crackpot from a rural village in India was able to understand elaborate math patterns, unknown to the rest of man until 100 years later. OK, so now we know Pierce Whateverhisname has really fallen off his rocker. In his latest ratings seeking rant, the British reporter has called for the Bible to be revised to include the Almighty's approval of gay marriage.

Forget about gay marriage. It doesn't really matter whether you agree with it or not. The important question is, who does this rocket scientist think should be the guy to alter what many believe to be God's words? So 2,000 years later, he wants to change the Bible ? I think it's a great idea. Maybe, they should reduce the 10 Commandments down to 8. Adultery? We'll let that one slide along with Coveting thy neighbors' IPads. And, while we're at it, why not change the "Lord's Day" from Sunday to Wednesday? That way, Christians can "keep holy" without missing a minute of NFL football.

Sounds to me like this Talking Head is an attention seeker. Why not simply let his interviewing skills speak for itself, AKA South Buffalo's Tim Russert? Perhaps he should open up Al Capone's vault and see if he left any Bibles lying around...

Standing out in the crowd

I don't know what's more bizarre: That there's a 7 foot tall thief in Chicago stealing from people off one of the trains, or the fact that the Chicago Police can't catch him. At least we know what Dennis Rodman's been up to since his retirement...

He should be easy to spot, but a 7-foot-tall robbery suspect in Chicago has eluded police.

The massive man and his partner in crime have pulled off four robberies between Dec. 10 and Dec. 18 on Chicago Transit Authority's Pink Line, WMAQ-TV reported.

In each incident, the two men jumped out of an arriving train, grabbed someone’s phone and then jumped back inside as the train departed, police said. One man is so tall that his head barely clears the door of the train.

What is the lowest thing a human being can do? Attempting to play them-self off as one of the relatives of the Newton, Connecticut school shooting victims has to be up there. Setting up a Pay Pal account and claiming to be the aunt of one of the deceased children will get you public scorn, but more importantly, will earn you a spot on the Blogger's Hall of Shame. Quite possibly a new low for humanity...

But the criminal complaint filed against Alba on Thursday alleges that Alba not only used her Facebook account, but telephone calls and text messages to falsely claim to be a relative of a shooting victim and solicit money she claimed was for the child’s “funeral fund.”

Too many guns

Not sure what to think about the mass shootings going on. I know I'll lose some 2nd Amendment loving friends on this, but I think some form of gun control is inevitable.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. However, the events in Connecticut and Rochester, New York this past week underscore the fact that too many of the wrong people possess weapons in this country. The NRA's call to arm more people (including teachers) is not the answer. Can you imagine your 5th grade teacher in possession of a firearm? If we brought guns into our schools, how long would it be before we had our first accidental shooting? "Oh, sorry about that Mr. Lunch Deliveryman. I thought you were an antisocial personality entering our school. I didn't mean to blow your head off."

There's no doubt about it. We live in a culture of violence here in America. I don't blame video games or movies. People all over the world watch the same movies and play the same video games we do. It is internal. The people committing these heinous crimes are at the extreme end of this mentality.

Although not a hunter, I'm not against hunters legally possessing hunting rifles (although I think the animals should be given them as well). George Carlin said , "Hunting is the only sport where one side doesn't even know they're in the game." I believe there should be a ban on assault weapons. I believe we need to look more closely at the way we treat the mentally ill. Finally, I believe we need to take a serious look at ourselves and ask why so many people in this country possess this rage.

OK. This might be the most poorly written post of the last three years, but what do you expect? It's 5:29 in the morning and I'm at the end of a very long shift. Peace.

Local officials would like to build a new football stadium within the city limits but most are dead set against building on the outer harbor.

City leaders say they need an area covering 200 acres with no businesses or potential for development. Have they considered Main Street in downtown Buffalo? Never mind, where would I go to buy my inner city street gear?

Don't trust mayor's poll numbers

 
While I do think Buffalo's do-nothing, empty suit mayor Byron Brown is a lock for reelection in 2013, I don't believe the "independent" poll their camp came out with today. From Bob McCarthy's Buffalo News column....

But that's exactly why poll results like these find their way into the public conversation. They are designed to scare away the Bernie Tolberts of the world, especially when they show Brown pounding him by a 70 percent to 15 percent tally.

And when pollsters throw in Comptroller Mark Schroeder just for the heck of it, they report Brown with 60 percent, Schroeder with 15 percent and Tolbert with 12 percent.

Notwithstanding the South Buffalo Judases who would support mayor Brown, I think Schroeder would fare much better than 15% in a citywide race.  This just goes to show that we reward mediocrity in our current political system. Get ready for four more years of feel good-say nothing press conferences from the uncharismatic Byron Brown. But don't worry. We're heading in the right direction with his appointment of Antoine Thompson as the city's new leading job developer.

Seven more years of misery

 
We have good news and bad news regarding the Buffalo Bills future in Western New York. On one hand, County Executive Mark Polancarcz announced that the team has agreed to a lease extension and will call Rich Stadium it's home for at least the next seven years.

On the other hand, I lied. There is no good news.

Zumba Hooker

What happens when the local Zumba instructor starts selling more than exercise lessons? The whole town gets caught up in scandal. A story like this happens every few years somewhere in the U.S. I guess it shows us that everything is not always as it appears to be. The dance instructor's clients include a former mayor of the town and at least one female. 

It also includes one guy who I'm glad is being exposed as a hypocrite...
 

Notable among them is Donald Fortin, 59, owner and founder of Fortin Construction Inc, a company that boasts of being 'Number one Maine Home Builder for over 20 years,' and advertises itself online as 'A Christian Family Owned Company.'

Indeed Mr Fortin is such a staunch advocate of conservative family values. According to state records, he donated $1000 to Protect Maine Marriage and organization set up to 'defend' marriage in the state from the perceived onslaught from 'gay rights activists' and 'radical judges' seeking to 'redefine marriage'. 

He also made a donation of $350 to Senator Garrett Mason a conservative opponent of the state's same-sex marriage ballot.

We have to give this guy our Bad Timing Award. Howard Slaughter of Buffalo's East side was proposing selling legal guns out of his Adams Street home. In the midst of the debate, the nation suffered arguably it's worst gun tragedy ever, as 20 six and seven year olds were gunned down by a crazed lunatic in Newtown, Connecticut.

I feel for people on both sides of the gun control debate. They are forced to rely on politicians to decide this important issue. Most of these officials are rock stupid, know nothing about guns, and wouldn't know who to get sound advice from on any issue. Some of the most unstable people you will ever meet. If any changes are to be made, they'll have to come from the American people themselves and not the people in Washington grabbing other guys' legs inside airport rest room stalls.

Whenever Buffalo Niagara Partnership President Andrew Rudnick's name comes up, the first question most Western New Yorkers ask is, "How has he been able to keep that job so long? As Brian Higgins pointed out awhile ago, the Partnership has long been viewed as "irrelevant." Rudnick will be retiring in June, but we're not exactly sure from what.

The most important decision Rudnick made each day for the last 26 years was deciding which bow tie he was going to wear to work. Among the Partnership's many accomplishments were... Oh, and then there was... And then there was the time they brought all the jobs to Buffalo. Never mind. I can't think of one thing this useless organization has done for this region during the last three decades.

Conform or be cast out

 

Not sure what led the Connecticut school killer to commit his heinous act. I'm sure it will reinvigorate the gun control debate in this country. How we treat mental illness will also be debated in the wake of this tragedy, for sure. We're also hearing the shooter had autism. When the media incorrectly reported his brother as the shooter, neighbors realized the mistake right away and knew he had to be the gunman. In other words, he was known to be the strange one.

Autism seems to take on many forms. I worked with an autistic person a few years ago. The young man was a brilliant musician who was obsessed with computers. In fact, his job was to design websites. He was a savant with very few, if any friends. I remember him living with a roommate who had a bird in their apartment. At one of his meetings, he said the bird was making too much noise and he was thinking about cooking it and eating it one night. He said this, as if it were a perfectly normal response to the bird being a bit noisy.

From everything I'm hearing about the Connecticut school shooter, he was socially awkward. He had no Senior HS picture. It just said camera shy under his name. (Come to think of it, so did mine, but that's another story). His parents were divorced and he seemed to have pent up rage and resentment towards them, as evidenced by him shooting his mother before going to the school.

In any event, it seems as though the Canadian band Rush predicted the potential for people like this. Alienation can lead to despair. And let's face it, we live in a very violent society. Comptroller-Elect Mychajliw seeks qualified applicants

 
Erie County Comptroller-Elect Stefan Mychajliw is looking for qualified candidates to serve in his administration.

“We encourage folks to share this link with friends and family so that we can cast as wide a net as possible to find qualified applicants.  One way to put an end to the ‘friends and family’ plan is to ensure county jobs are posted in an open, honest, and transparent manner.  My administration will lead by example by making sure everyone has a fair chance at the privilege of working as a public servant,” said Comptroller-Elect Stefan Mychajliw.

Buddy the book is enjoying a little R&R down in Key West with good buddy Jimmy Johnson.  The guy that has two super bowll rings compliments of Marv Levy and Jim Kelly.  Whatever happened to the debt ceiling????  We now have this grossly exagerated over the cliff????  I can't wait!  I am so fearful of heights.  I know our "so called leaders" like to give their buddies from the media over hype fear mongering story. This is kind of stretching it.  I remember red and green light from one of our former elected kickball captains. Its kind of similar to being threatened by your middle school teacher or principal.  It remains to be childish adults making childish threats.I hope they don't let the lobster loose?????

Plays of the week-  Belichik gave me a whooping!  Record last week 2-2.  This week Chicago (+3.5) over Green Bay, Baltimore (+2.5) over GB,  Seattle (-5) over the Jills bye -bye to Buddy Nix - see Ya at the improv!  Adios Chan!  You don't have it! 

The big Sunday night game is gonna be a tough play.  I think that the Patriots will confuse Humperdinkle the roolie QB.  If NE gets any turnovers this will be over with quicker than you can say Steve Grogan!  However, I will go with the 9ers (+6.5).  I hope Belichick has an off night.  This is a tough play.

Teachers assaulted in Buffalo

 

This week's violent assaults on Buffalo Public School teachers are brought to you by Hot Stuff the Buffalo, a chief cheese maker at Yancey's Fancy, New York's artisan cheese. 

Attacks like this happen every week in certain Buffalo Public Schools. The kids involved are the first students the charter school "reformers" get rid of when they are "turning the school around". Unfortunately for Buffalo teachers and principals, they don't have that option. They're stuck with who they got in most cases.

“We have fights here almost every day,” said Marc Bruno, the Riverside teacher who was kicked in the head. “The kids walk around and say, ‘We can’t get suspended – we don’t care what you say.’ Most of the kids who go to school here are really good kids. But you’ve got 20, 25 percent who are pretty rough. Someone’s going to get hurt.”

For every one violent attack in the schools, there are dozens of verbal attacks on teachers. Many of these students are used to getting whatever they need, right now, for free. You're seeing the product of very bad or nonexistent parenting in many of the schools. Grandstanders like Sam Radford and the charter school profit seekers really think it is the schools themselves that are the problem, and not the parents. Many of the parents are the same ones who caused problems in the schools fifteen years ago, and they've multiplied.

I've advocated for a long time to remove the worst of the worst and create Alternative schools in Buffalo. I feel bad for the decent kids that they have to sit next to students with zero discipline, intent on causing havoc.

I hope for everyone's sake, the people pulling Kim Jong Un's strings are smart enough to keep him from making any real decisions. Rally for Amanda this Saturday

Amanda Wienckowski's life was cut way too short at the hands of a gutless coward. Because of corruption and incompetence in city hall, her death has never been ruled a homicide. This, despite the fact that her frozen body was discovered in a garbage tote across the street from the last person who saw her. (A man with a history of violent crimes against women.)

Amanda's family has never made excuses for the choices she made in life. Fighting a long battle with addiction, she put herself in some difficult situations. However, she did not deserve to die the way she did, and her family deserves answers.

Leslie Brill, Amanda's courageous mother, will be holding a rally this Saturday December 12th at noon in front of City Hall. Empty Suit Brown won't be there, as he only shows up to feel good events, like parades and Street Namings. I believe the authorities underestimated Ms. brill's resolve. Her friends and family will not let Amanda be forgotten and are demanding justice. I also will never let this story die and encourage the public to join them this Saturday at noon to continue this fight. 

Remembering the Forgotten

One hundred years ago, the poor, homeless, and destitute who passed away were unceremoniously dumped into the ground at Forest Lawn Cemetery. No name written on their tombstone, as if they didn't exist and their lives meaningless.

It was a different time and people simply thought differently. Yesterday, over 30 volunteers from People, Incorporated gathered at the site to honor 296 of these forgotten souls. They laid wreaths at their gravesites. A simply act with a simple message: These lives did have value...

Most of the people buried in that section died between 1870 and 1970.

The young adults started their project by edging the graves, sweeping off grave markers and raking leaves. Then, based on information from Forest Lawn officials, they began making and laminating the wreath tags that state, “In Memory of (name) From Your Friends at People Inc.”


It's easy to dwell on how the last generation treated the destitute, however, I'd rather give props to the current generation for righting a wrong. This is one of those local stories that make you stop and think and be thankful for all the things you have and to do something for someone less fortunate this holiday season.
