Letter to the editor- Signs

I've held the same opinion as this letter writer for a long time. Politicians should keep their names off of public signs. It would be wrong to single out Deputy Mayor Brown. He certainly is not the first person to use signs as free advertising. They all do it. It's nice to know there are people as fed up as me. Patty Doyle of Elma wants to use duct tape to tape over their names. I hope this is a trend that spreads...

Politicians names don't belong on signs

In last Saturday’s Off Main Street column, Frank Maddock said that Mayor Byron Brown’s name does not belong on the new surveillance camera signs. He’s absolutely right, but we should go one step further. Every politician’s name should be removed from every sign on public property. I am sick of seeing politicians’ names plastered on signs at parks, buildings, etc.

Too expensive to replace the signs? I’ll donate the duct tape needed to cover up the names of Brown and all politicians who think they deserve to have their names on taxpayer-funded property.

The article ends by saying that Maddock “suspects ego may have something to do with it.” No doubt.

Farmer's Market accepting food stamps

In a move that can best be described as mighty "white" of them, the Elmwood/Bidwell Farmers Market is now accepting food stamps. Actually, this is a good move. The food at the markets are healthy and a better alternative to some of the other choices out there...

Cars vandalized on McKinley Pkwy.

This is a typical crime involving people who don't understand what it means to have to work for something. Some vandals spray painted two dozen vehicles on McKinley Parkway last night. If caught, they should be made an example out of. I feel bad for the people who had to wake up to this nonsense. Where are the crime prevention cameras Byron Brown is always touting? The vandals sprayed 3399 or 399 on the cars, which will probably lead to them getting caught. Police have no word yet on the whereabouts of Byron Brown, Jr. between 4 and 6AM last night...

South Park Lake Fox

A still shot from a fox roaming around S. Park Lake

From time to time, I try to film various wild animal sightings within the city of Buffalo. I saw this fox last night, along South Park Lake (by the Erie County Botanical Gardens) in South Buffalo. I was driving and I looked to my left and he was staring right at me. Above is a still shot from the short video below. If you live along Hopkins Street, don't be surprised if you wake up one morning and see one of these along the street...

***Note: Click on the green "wildlife" link below this post to check out other animal sightings I've caught on film.

Landmark1st amendment case

An Ohio court ruled today that barking and hissing at an attack dog is not protected free speech.

MASON, Ohio, July 24 (UPI) -- A judge has ruled that barking and hissing are not protected by the First Amendment.

Mason, Ohio, Judge Andrew Batsche ruled Friday that when Ryan Stephens barked and hissed at a police dog in April, he was not protected by a constitutional right, The Cincinnati Inquirer reported.

Yes, but what about barking in a crowded theater? The best part of this story is how the man actually had the nerve to blame the dog...

"Even if there was a communicative value to the defendant's barking and hissing, it is clear that this ordinance is directed toward prohibited conduct and impairment of a First Amendment right is incidental," Batsche wrote.

Stephens claimed "the dog started it," police reports said.

I disagree with the judge's ruling and I'd like to submit this scene as evidence...

You may now kiss the groom

Several people have asked me to comment on gay marriage. I think the new law/bill isn't a big deal. If two broads want to get married, I'll attend the wedding. Two dudes, too. I don't care if they're the same sex. One of my favorite former female players is planning on getting married to another girl, and I don't see anything wrong with it. It doesn't matter to me and will never affect me. I'm not gay and I'm not a Bible Banger. These two groups seem to feel most strongly for/against gay marriage.

Congratulations to State Senator Tim "Hortons" Kennedy for doing what he was told to do to get the bill passed. He's the one who has to explain it to his priest and the elderly people at his church. In my opinion, I think priests should have the right to deny holy communion to anyone who admits to not reading my blog.

Kennedy was really at the forefront on this issue. Not only did he vote for it. He and Congressman Higgins are planning on tying the knot next weekend in a quiet ceremony over at Gallagher (formerly known as Welfare) Beach. Barry Lillis will be presiding. A source close to the couple said, "Tim's been prostituting himself to Brian since he turned 18. They might as well make it official."...

City Hall politricks

So much for Andrew Cuomo's peace deal. It only took Mayor Steve Casey about 72 hours to turn his back on the governor and the local Democratic party. Casey and Deputy Mayor Brown sent their hacks out to collect signatures for Larry Adamczyk and Ralph Pornandez. The two are looking to unseat incumbents Dave Franczyk and David Rivera, respectively. It says here, both were offered high paying jobs or some other perk by Mayor Casey in exchange for their candidacy.

Adamczyk is a former adviser to Dennis Gorski. I think he's a decent guy (probably because he gave me a job once). Pornandez must be trying to capitalize on the great job he's done in turning around Buffalo's schools. Brown was also probably trying to find someone to run against Mickey Kearns. South Buffalo has no shortage of chumps talking a good game in January, but when push comes to shove, they'd rather sit on the sidelines (or their bar stools). Kearns would have been tough to beat, giving the name recognition he earned in taking on Lord Byron in the mayor's race two years ago.

I could care less who wins in the Battle of the Puerto Ricans. However, Pornandez strikes me as a major weasel/turncoat, although I used to work with his niece and she was hot.

The Battle of the Polocks has to go to Adamczyk. Franczyk is little more than a fossil. He's had plenty of time to get things done in city hall and what are his accomplishments? The Fillmore district looks like the city of Beirut during the 1980's. Adamczyk at least has a sense of humor. Franczyk strikes me as a babbling bohunk.

I've been doing a great deal of cycling this summer. I've found it's a great substitute for running (if you bike for longer periods) and much less stressful on the joints. My right ankle has pretty much been shot since I broke it 20 years ago.

I knew it had been a hot week but I thought it was supposed to be a little cooler yesterday. Anyway, I rode out to East Aurora to watch our u10s play at Knox Field. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes each way. Before yesterday, I had not known the entire town of Elma was on a hill. Looking over the guardrails, I was also unaware of how steep the gorge overlooking Cazenovia Creek was. You don't notice this when you're in a car. It really didn't seem that bad. Surprisingly, I was only sweating a little when I got home. I heard on the news, Buffalo set a record with a high temperature of 95 degrees. No wonder the few drops of rain I encountered at the end felt so good. Fifteen pounds down since March, ten more to go.

Cyber stalker

You thought I had a lot of time on my hands? This computer hacker from Florida broke into the email accounts of girls he went to high school with. He took risque photos (intended for their boyfriends) and made them their Facebook profile pictures...

At least 19 women were victimized by a computer hacker who broke into their email accounts, captured risqué photographs of the women and then swapped them for the women's Facebook profile pictures, authorities say.

The hacker, Joseph Bernard Campbell, 24, of Largo, has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges of cyberstalking and unauthorized access to a computer, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Tampa. He is scheduled to enter his plea Aug. 5 before U.S. District Judge Richard Lazzara.

The women "were devastated," said Lt. Bill Sohl of the Belleair Police Department. "All of a sudden they were getting phone calls from their friends, saying, 'Do you know what's on your Facebook page?' "

Woods fires caddie: Interim named

Tiger Woods fired his longtime caddie today. I wonder how much he's paying him to keep his mouth shut to the press...

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Tiger Woods fired caddie Steve Williams on Wednesday, leaving his good friend stunned and ending a 12-year relationship in which he won 72 times worldwide and 13 majors.

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it's time for a change," Woods said on his website. "Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future."

Woods did not say who would replace Williams -- one of only two caddies he has employed on a regular basis -- or when he might return to golf.

"Needless to say, this came as a shock," Williams said in a statement posted on his own website.

Woods has named Carl Spackler as a replacement for Williams on an interim basis. A former assistant greenskeeper, Spackler made a name for himself by caddying for the Dali Lama in Tibet...

Fossil unearthed in Erie County

I almost forgot about this longtime fossil. Former County Legislator/crook Al DeBenedetti has crawled out of his rathole to oppose reducing the size of the legislature...

"I'm not anti-reduction in the size of the legislature," says DeBenedetti. "I was there when the legislature was reduced from 17 to 15 members and I supported it. This is more about following the law. That's an obligation that each elected official has is to uphold the law."

Give me a break! Once a political hack. Always a political hack. DeBenedetti's not fooling anyone. Somebody shut this idiot up. The career politicians are doing everything they can to keep the seats, against the will of the people. The voters spoke loud and clear in November. They want to see less of clowns like DeBenedetti and more of their tax dollars. That they would unearth this jackass to the local media, is a slap in the face to all residents. Go away, scammer!

Church sign

Thanks to my nephew Nick for this photo. It's always funny when church signs imply the threat of burning in eternal hell as some sort of cute joke. It doesn't make sense for churches to be so judgmental. No matter what your sin, you're going straight to hell. Have we really advanced that far from the Puritan days? I could care less what anybody does behind closed doors.

If you believe the Bible, you know that Jesus Christ hung out with the undesirables of his time. Yet, many people calling themselves Christians, want to send everyone else to hell. Most of the truly religious people I've known, never wasted their time trying to scare people. These are silly times we live in...

Rich guy attacked

Rupert Murdoch was attacked with white foam this week during a hearing. When your name's Rupert, you can't help but be a rich guy. In the video, you'll see his much younger wife lunge at the attacker in an apparent effort to show she loves him for more than his money...

LONDON (AP) - A protester rushed Rupert Murdoch as the media baron gave testimony to British lawmakers, causing a scuffle and suspending the hearing.

The protester interrupted the hearing by splattering Murdoch with white foam in a foil pie dish. He was then struck by Wendi Deng, who jumped up to defend her husband.

Police in the back of the committee room were holding an apparently handcuffed man with white foam covering his face and shirt.

The end of an era

The last Dickie's Donuts in the Buffalo area closed yesterday. It's sad when you hear about these 24 hour places closing down. My favorite people in the area are the ones driving around at 2:30 am looking for donuts and conversation. I love 24 hour restaurants and stores.

There will be a brief moment of silence at State Senator Tim Kennedy's office on South Park tomorrow at 10AM. Who am I kidding? There would never be anyone working in Kennedy's office anyway at 10AM... or 12PM... or 2PM on any weekday....

Letter to the editor- Sam Hoyt

A Buffalo News reader from Hamburg accurately points out how incompetence and failure are superseded by political connections in Andrew Cuomo's administration. Sam Hoyt proves that it pays to be the entitled son of a New York State lawmaker. 30 years of collecting dust in Albany, Andrew Cuomo rewards this blowhard with a fake job title. I blame the voters of North Buffalo. How could you people have been so stupid, to continuously reelect this imbecile?...

Hoyt's failures somehow gets rewarded with big post

I have to hand it to Sam Hoyt, here he is about to be kicked to the curb in a rigged district, and he gets a plum from the governor. The governor who promised ethics reform, promoted Hoyt. How does this guy do it?

Poll: Worst movie sequel ever made

Going to see a movie sequel can be like stepping into a puddle on a cold day in January. You're feeling great and the moment you realize the new movie stinks, it's like a cold dose of reality strikes you. They can rarely recreate the magic of an original film (Superman II being the rarest of exceptions).

Please take the time to vote in the latest poll at the right on your screen. What is the worst movie sequel ever made? Some movies not making the list, but warranting serious consideration were Caddyshack II, Dumb and Dumberer, Weekend at Bernies II, Speed II, and Jaws 3D. However, I narrowed the choices down to six. If there is one you think should be on the list, feel free to mention it in the comments.

Random thoughts from the ghetto-Volume 45

Photobucket

I look out my window and see the empty 40 oz beer bottles, hypodermic needles, crack pipes and abandoned shopping carts on my front lawn and begin to think. The end results have become known as my random thoughts from the ghetto...

-When I was a kid, they would say someone got "beat up." Now, they say "beat down." What year did this phrase change?

-I was watching the Rocky marathon on AMC last weekend and a question flashed across the screen: It said, who do you think would win in a fight, Rocky or Rambo? There was no mention of the crazy trucker/arm wrestler from Over the Top.
Photobucket

-Sometimes I have a slow reaction to things. Did a woman actually hire a group of thugs to try and break the legs of a rival figure skater? Did this really happen?

-What the hell was Mork from Ork doing on an episode of Happy Days? I thought the show was about midwestern life during the 1950's, not space aliens.

-I keep having this reoccurring dream where my teeth fall out one by one. I don't know why this is, since I brush my teeth every day and have no cavities. I wake up and it actually feels like they're all gone.

-It's great to see the U.S. Women's Soccer team do so well. They are a great team, work very hard, and I'm a big fan of Abbie Wambach. I hope they win tomorrow, but it is annoying when Hollywood celebrities like Tom Hanks and others tweet about them. Whenever I hear a media cheerleader talking about the game, I change the radio station immediately. I'm no expert, but they don't have a clue as to what they are talking about.

-One time, I stopped by a friend's house to say hello. His 13 year old brother was known for being in and out of trouble, but we always got along. He answered the door and I said, "Hey Jeff. What's going on?" For no reason, he kicked me "where it counts" as hard as he could. The next thing I remember was rolling around on the porch screaming in pain, as he apologized repeatedly. To this day, he says he doesn't know why he did it. I actually ran into Jeff (pictured below) at a party today. He is sporting the same look he had right before he "sucker kicked" me 17 years ago...

Something crawls to the surface

Disgruntled employee

The best part of this story, besides the kid at 1:38 who looks like he's on crystal meth, is how many people identify and sympathize with the disgruntled employee. WIVB got over 60,000 hits on their website last night. How come I only got 223? I stole it from them five minutes after they posted it. Oh, well. Yo quiero Taco Bell...

Taco Bell worker goes out with a bang

This is funny. A disgruntled teenaged employee at the KFC/Taco Bell on Transit Road, found an interesting way to tell his manager he wouldn't be coming in to make tacos anymore. Whatever happened to putting in your two weeks' notice?

DEPEW, N.Y. (WIVB) - A former employee at the Taco Bell/KFC at Transit and Losson in Depew chose to make a bold statement when they decided to leave their position.

The employee left a message on the fast food restaurant's exterior sign Thursday night announcing they quit. The sign reads, "I quit - Adam / **** you :)" A co-worker of the supposed sign maker at Taco Bell/KFC tells News 4 that apparently Adam is the name of a shift manager at the restaurant who denied the worker the Fourth of July off after they had worked 22 days straight, despite allowing others to have the day off.

The kid worked 22 straight days, Adam. Give him the day off for the fourth. This story reminds me of two friends of mine who worked at the Noco gas station near my house. Chris used the big sign in front to write Brian (Last Name) likes men. It was up for a few hours. Everything was fine until Brian's mother stopped by to buy some milk (true story). Brian could have sued Chris, but back then, we settled things with our fists. Right after walking to school uphill in the snow for sixteen miles. And after the nuns beat us with their rosaries, we thanked them...

The worst volunteer job in America

From WGRZ.com:

CLARENCE, NY - A former Wyoming County Boy Scout leader is facing charges for his alleged involvement with a 14 year old boy from back in 2009.

State Police say Timothy Klossner, 47, of Attica is facing several sex related charges, along with endangering the welfare of a child.

He was formerly a scoutmaster in both Attica and Alexander.

Who in their right mind would want to be a Boy Scoutmaster these days? If they look creepy, people pretty much assume they have ulterior motives. If they look normal, people think they are pulling a "Mike Brady", appearing like the all-American heterosexual male, but hiding deep, dark secrets.

I feel bad for the normal father, who actually wants to be a scout leader for the right reasons. If I was that guy, I'd probably just take my own kids camping and find another way to help others.

Darien Lake aftermath

For those of you not living in the Buffalo area, a man was killed when he was thrown off the Superman roller coaster at Darien Lake this week. He was a 29 year old double amputee, who lost his legs from a roadside bomb in Iraq...

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Hackemer, 29, and his nephew, Ashton Luffred, 19, went up the exit ramp to the roller coaster, passing the sign stating that riders "must have two legs" and "sufficient body strength."

Luffred assisted his uncle, who lost his legs and left hip to a roadside bomb in Iraq, into a seat in the first car of the ride, then sat beside him.

For Hackemer, it was another step in regaining his old life. The Ride of Steel was his favorite from his younger days at the amusement park.

The operators of the ride were three people in their late teens/early 20s. If you ask me, they were placed in a no win situation. If they refused to let the man on the ride, everyone would have been all over them to let him on. By everyone, I mean the man, his nephew, and probably other people in line. Most people, while not necessarily approving of the war, support the young men and women involved in it. And if they allowed him on, they were clearly violating their own policies and procedures.

We don't know how well they were trained to deal with situations like this. The wise thing to do would have been to call a manager. If I was the manager, I would have wanted them to make that call. However, I don't think it's fair to blame the workers. They were being respectful of the disabled veteran and probably feel terrible about the whole event. The man went by the sign, which stated that the ride required two legs. He made a conscious decision to get on the ride. It's just a tragic story any way you look at it.

The other Casey

What's funnier than a black guy from Pennsylvania with the name Casey Anthony? Two of his sons are also named Casey Anthony. So, is it common these days for people to give two of their kids the same first name?

I always find it funny when someone shares their name with a famous person, especially when the parents were oblivious to the person's fame. I've coached kids named Marcus Allen, Steven Tyler, Michael Jackson. I haven't had any Bart, Homer, or O.J. Simpsons-yet...

Illegal use of the hands

A priest who taught at St. Francis High School was arrested in Connecticut for getting too close to one of his under age parishioners. The Franciscan Friars Conventual has suspended Father Michael Miller from all public ministry (must be a new policy)...

BERLIN, CONNECTICUT-A member of the Franciscan Friars, who once taught at St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, is under arrest in Connecticut for alleged misconduct involving a minor.

Father Michael Miller, 41, was charged by the Berlin Police Department with five counts of risk of injury/impairing the morals of a minor, a felony, and one count of criminal attempt to obscenity, a misdemeanor.

Because the case involves a child under the age of 16, the case has been ordered sealed by the court and no other information can be released at this time.

Father Miller taught at St. Francis in 1993 and again from 2000-2003. The Buffalo Diocese learned of the arrest on Tuesday. The diocese, the Franciscan Friars and the high school are unaware of any allegations of misconduct against him during his time at St. Francis.

Conspiracy in Buffalo schools

Buffalo developer/activist Carl Paladino has filed a complaint against the Buffalo Schools administration with the New York State Attorney General's office. Among the things Paladino touches on in his complaint are allowing Superintendent Williams to stay here for another year, the gift of public monies (with no known explanation) to Folasade Oladele (A.K.A. Beverly McCelroy Johnson-never trust someone with two names), and the illegal solicitation of funds and grant money by the leadership in the Buffalo Schools.

In a statement, that his critics will try to portray as racist, Paladino asserts that the leadership in the black community are letting down their own constituents through selfishness and greed...

In the complaint, as well as in interviews, Paladino was outspoken about pointing a finger at black leaders in the district.

"You've got a black community that has for years suffered at the hands of its leadership," he said. "People will call it racist. Call it what you want. You've got black leaders ruining the lives of these kids."

Then you have most of the School Board, which basically works for BTF President Phil Rumore. They purposely hold their elections in May (at a cost to taxpayers), ensuring that mostly BTF stakeholders will show up. They don't want the election to be held in November, as this might lead to more turnout and actual reform. Sad.

Don't trust new school board President Lou Petrucci, Carl. He will talk out of both sides of his mouth. He'll tell you how great you are when he sees you, but he was actively supporting Andrew Cuomo last Fall. When push comes to shove, everyone knows he answers to Phil Rumore, Ray "Wrong Turn" McGurn, and the local Democratic party. He will never take a moral or ethical stand on anything. He's a paid prostitute who aspires to be Councilman. He would leave the board tomorrow if the position opened up. Fortunately, the word is getting out that he is a known liar, and hopefully Brian Higgins will look to someone else.
