March for a cause

Some caring guys got together at UB and marched in high heels to show their support for sexual assault awareness. We all know their real goal was to make themselves seem like "sensitive" guys to get better looking dates...

The University at Buffalo and Crisis Services hosted the sixth annual "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" march down Main Street Saturday afternoon.

Men put on women's high heeled shoes to raise awareness about gender relations and the issue of sexual violence.

Among the dignitaries taking part in the fundraiser were Congressman Brian Higgins, former Congressman Chris Lee, and channel 4's Mike Cejka. When asked to comment on the great contribution the they were making to the fight against sexual violence, one of them said, "Who said anything about sexual violence? We dress like this every Saturday night"...

Durant Park update

Here's a story I ran two summers ago on a press conference called by Councilmembers Kearns and Fontana, regarding changes they promised to make over at Durant Park...

Thank you to everyone for showing up to Durant Park today. Councilmembers Mike Kearns and Rich Fontana called a news conference regarding the state of secondary parks like Durant and Hillery. They plan on installing cameras in Durant Park to prevent future vandalism . We had between 50-75 people show up on two hours notice on a workday. The kids all showed up with soccer balls and started practicing on their own. It was great to see. Neighbors came out and thanked us for taking back the park. The youth soccer players love their game and take great pride in representing the south side of Buffalo.

**We have an important update. Wait. No we don't. Despite a lot of talk that day, there hasn't been one single improvement made over at the park. Two years later. No cameras. Nothing.

After a column I wrote last week, some people asked me for examples of times their councilmembers didn't follow through on things. This was an easy one. Half the time, when they're making promises, I don't even think they are listening to what they are saying. I guess that's why I wouldn't make a good politician. If I promised to do something, I'd at least write it down and make an effort to do it.

Red light scam

Deputy Mayor Byron Brown is trying to use money for the arts as a bargaining chip in his bid to push the red light camera scam on taxpayers. Don't fall for it. Members of the Common Council: Be warned. This will not go over well should you support this blatant money grab...

Fines paid by red-light runners who are caught on surveillance cameras would end up helping cash-starved cultural groups under a plan unveiled Friday by Mayor Byron W. Brown.

In a bid to advance a red-light cameras initiative that he has been touting for years, Brown is offering to use $300,000 from the project as one-time grants to dozens of arts groups that had their county funding eliminated this year.

As we've said all along, this is not a safety issue, as Brown asserted when he proposed the legislation months ago. It's simply an attempt to reach deeper into your pockets. This latest ploy proves he cannot be trusted. Watch for Riverside Councilmember Joe Golispek, who is clearly in Brown's pocket, to make ridiculous statements in favor of the cameras this week. He's already been identified by your Blogger as a tool. All this legislation will do, is make it more expensive to live here and drive more hardworking people out of state.

Superman: I'm renouncing my US citizenship

It looks like even Superman has become politically correct. In a new issue, the comic book hero from Smallville, Kentucky has renounced his American citizenship.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Truth, justice and the ... global way?

Superman has started a stir with a declaration in the new issue of "Action Comics" that he intends to renounce his U.S. citizenship because he's tired of his actions being construed as instruments of U.S. policy.

The Man of Steel, who emigrated to earth as a child from Krypton and was adopted by the Kents in Smallville, Kan., comes to the conclusion that he's better off serving the world at large after he's accused of causing an international incident by flying to Tehran amid a large protest.

Oh well. At least he didn't become a Canadian...

Superman: I'm renouncing my US citizenship

Tarzan wasn't a ladies' man
He'd just come along and scoop 'em up under his arm
Like that, quick as a cat in the jungle
But Clark Kent now there was a real gent
He would not be caught sittin' around in no
Junglescape, dumb as an ape doing nothing

Supermen never made any money
For saving the world from Solomon Grundy
And sometimes I despair the world will never see
Another man like him...

Prison rules

A fight breaks out between guards over a bag of chips. An inmate, I repeat, an inmate chips his tooth breaking up the scuffle. Is this another day at an Erie County correctional facility or a Three Stooges episode?

I thought all Erie County correctional workers were known for their high levels of intelligence, work ethic, and character. In fact, doesn't one of the Colpoys boys work there? Oh, never mind. I misspoke...

An inmate at the Erie County Correctional Facility lost a tooth last week when he intervened in a fight between two corrections officers scrapping over a bag of chips, prison personnel told The Buffalo News.

Cultural differences in the classroom?

It's hard to describe the words I felt after reading Rod Watson's column yesterday in the Buffalo news. The article was about an important topic:educating black children. Watson is high on some author who wrote a book describing how he "got to" inner city students. A Buffalo teacher is inviting this author to speak to current teachers. I had several issues with the opinions expressed in the article...

We need different ways of reaching the at-risk student,” said Doyle, who recalled rearranging her classroom to accommodate “hyperactive” boys who needed to move around.

"Needed" to move around. During class? You "need" to move around in gym class and in recess. In the other classes, you need to sit down and pay attention to what the teacher is saying, regardless of your skin color. This is what the students in Buffalo do when they "need" to walk around. They walk by other students and grab them, hug them, or slap them. They try to put on a show for their peers. It has nothing to do with being hyperactive. Wait, there's more...

Kunjufu argues that many white teachers aren’t prepared for the cultural differences. For instance, the black extended family with relatives constantly in and out of the house, multiple radios and TVs blaring and the active inner-city street environment produce kids used to functioning amid a high degree of stimuli rather than studying alone in a quiet room.

Female teachers, many from the suburbs, who don’t grasp the cultural differences— or find such boys intimidating —can be too quick to write them off.

Could you imagine the outcry, if a white author said black teachers aren't prepared for the cultural differences involved in teaching white students? Cultural differences? That is nonsense. Does Watson think we need to start blaring multiple radios in class? Will this provide the "stimuli" necessary to learn how to read? It's not very complicated. You go to class and pay attention, because a good education is one of the keys to success in life. What a child needs is a parent (preferably two) to get this point across to them at a young age, not a teacher who is sensitive to their cultural needs.

The reason some female teachers find many of the boys intimidating is not because they don't grasp cultural differences. It's because many of the students are intimidating. They know this and know there is not much the teacher can do about it, in the current system. I've seen students get in teachers' faces. I listen to students talk back to very good teachers in the Buffalo schools on a daily basis. To say it is about cultural differences is a bunch of garbage. Watson needs to spend less time watching Michelle Pfeiffer's Dangerous Minds and go into the Buffalo schools and see what is really going on.

I subbed for two years at a charter school in Buffalo. I remember a new student (a black girl) who had just transferred from a Buffalo public school. Her first week at the charter school, she thought she could boss all the teachers around. She was yelling across the room at lunch at the top of her lungs. After all, she was able to get away with it at her old school, because many of her peers did the same thing with little or no consequence. They ran the school because they had the numbers. She was immediately removed from class at the charter school. Her mother was contacted. She was told, in no uncertain terms, that she would be removed from the school if her attitude didn't improve. About a month later, she was a well behaved student. It had nothing to do with her culture. The school was 50/50 white and black, yet race was rarely an issue there. The white students and the black students all got along and worked hard. They knew what was expected of them and that there would be zero tolerance of disrespect towards adults.

There is nothing wrong with the majority of teachers in the Buffalo schools. Most (but not all) of the students who disrupt the class with their nonsense learn this type of behavior at home (or don't learn proper behavior at home). It's called rudeness and ignorance and does not discriminate between the races. People can write as many feel good books as they want. Until we stop making ridiculous excuses for the abhorrent behavior exhibited by the students in the Buffalo schools and blaming the teachers, it will continue.

It’s all about connecting with students

You want to talk about cultural differences? What about these two? The straight laced Conservative and the surfer who's been "stoned since the 3rd grade"...

Your leaders

Congratulations South Buffalo residents: These are the people you've currently entrusted as your leaders:
Photobucket
Tim "Einstein" Whalen- High Pants Higgins' handpicked choice for County Legislator. Aligned with the Republicans on the legislature because he is told to by his royal High Pants. At least he spelled his name right on his SAT's... We think. Might be getting some unexpected competition in a few months, from a dark horse with some surprising support.

Photobucket
Tim "Hortons" Kennedy-Not known for his public speaking prowess or intellect. Kennedy is well known in the district ( at various fast food restaurants).

Photobucket
Mickey Kearns-Very good at criticizing the mayor and getting quotes in the Buffalo News. However, not very good at producing results. He makes a lot of promises and puts his faith in the wrong people. Instead of listening to suits at city hall and blowhards, he should listen to the people who got him elected. (For some reason, people like to say I work for Kearns, I'm on his payroll, etc.) I laugh whenever I hear this. That's news to me.

Photobucket
Brian "High Pants" Higgins- Missing in action since he went to Washington. Announced last Fall that Waterfront development was completed. Could have fooled the thousands of people not frequenting it. I've always said, the most underrated beaches are always the ones that don't allow swimming. Career politician from birth. Has yet to answer as to why he pays local political hanger-on Rick Finnegan $20,000/yr in taxpayer money to literally do nothing.

Photobucket
Mark Schroeder-He said the new WalMart on Seneca Street was going to be a "gamechanger." Despite no opposition to the project,we haven't heard any more about it for months, leaving many residents wondering what time the game starts???

Buffalo's finest

For the third time in the last 6 months a suspect has escaped Buffalo police custody. Buffalo Police Spokesidiot Mike DeGeorge says that after a thorough investigation, the detective in question might face inter-department disciplinary action. If they really want to punish the slacker, they should force him to listen to DeGeorge attempt to talk for 30 minutes. This guy's terrible...

Buffalo schools could be state run soon

It looks like some career politicians are calling for the state to take over the Buffalo Public Schools...

Hoyt said Tuesday that he is researching the possibility of a state takeover of the district.

"I am fed up with the leadership in the district and the leadership of the board," Hoyt wrote in an e-mail. "I believe that both the superintendent and the board have shown an inability to seriously address the crisis facing our inner-city youth."

Isn't it nice that a man chasing around 21 year old interns in Albany for 20 years, now fancies himself as an expert on education? Hoyt, who'd be stocking shelves at WalMart had his father not been Assemblyman Bill Hoyt, is clearly in the pocket of the charter school lobby. But if their plan calls for the removal of Superintendent Williams and the entire Board of Education, I have to say I'm all for it.

The Superintendent has been a major disappointment and the Board is too busy looking up pornography on district issued laptops to get anything done. They should all be removed starting with Ralph Pornandez and Pinocchio Petrucci.

www.buffalonews.com

At the end of this clip, Hoyt continues his role as paid spokesperson for the charter schools by saying, "There is strong evidence that the state is finally getting it's act together." It's about time, loser. You've only been in Albany for 20 years. Someone needs to pull the hook on this bozo...

The Eugenics Movement

I read this article in USA Today about the dark secrets of "eugenics," where scientists tried to weed out the undesirables from reproducing by issuing forced sterilizations.

"Three generations of imbeciles is enough," thundered Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., in the 1927 Buck vs Bell court decision, legalizing forced sterilizations nationwide.

Fortunately, disdain for Hitler's "racial hygiene" practices, led to the downfall of this type of science. Who are we to determine what people should be able to reproduce? Just look at who they were targeting...

The sterilizations were aimed at ensuring no offspring for poor people exhibiting "feeblemindedness, epilepsy, criminality, insanity, (and) alcoholism," among other "unfit human traits," in the words of Yale historian Daniel Keyles.

Whew! It's a good thing this idea never caught on. Throw in incestuous marriages and these characteristics describe many of the common traits exhibited by the political families of South Buffalo...

Chippewa St. racism

A Chippewa Street bar is accused of closing at 11PM because the crowd was mostly black...

The management of 4Play nightclub, 45 W. Chippewa St., told party promoter Devon Jones that more white people needed to come to the club by 11 p. m. or the mostly black crowd would be kicked out, Jones said.

This is the strangest part of the story...

Jones said the bar’s owner approached him at about 10:15 p. m., claiming there was a previous agreement that 50 percent of the bar’s patrons would be white, and the other 50 percent black. Jones said he had made no such arrangement.

How did that conversation go?

Owner:"Hey, This crowd don't look white to me. We had an agreement, didn't we?"

Jones:"Yes. The honkies will be here shortly. Don't worry."

Owner: "Well, they better be here by 11:00PM or we're shutting down."

Jones: "Some are still at the Sabres game and others are checking their stock portfolios. They'll be here."

How do you talk about the racial makeup of a group without getting into trouble? If a bunch of Korean people showed up to the bar at the last minute, would that have changed things?

You can't kick law abiding people out of a business because of their color. I have a feeling there are two sides to this story. We've heard what the promoter said. It will be interesting to see what the owners have to say...

Briere vs Kaleta

The last several years, I've felt that Tim Connolly was the most overrated Sabre while Pat Kaleta was the most underated. A recent poll amongst active players had Kaleta as one of the most hated players in the NHL. I assumed it was because of his aggressive style. Kaleta has made a name for himself by being willing to hit players. However, if this story is true, it might shed some light on why opposing players have serious disdain for the Angola native...

Briere had been emotionally charged up, and more than a little angry, since early in the game. "Honestly, one of their young guys said something to me that was personal and crossed the line," the former Sabre said. "It got me fired up a little bit more than it usually does."

A Flyers source said Patrick Kaleta made comments to Briere and teammate Scott Hartnell about their divorces early in the Flyers' 5-4 overtime victory, which evened the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at three games apiece.

I've never been a big fan of Daniel Briere, however, he's been the MVP of the series, from what I've seen. If Kaleta said what is reported, it's too bad. He should know better than to bring outside stuff into a game. He's an energetic, aggressive player who should let his play speak for itself. Talking about opposing players failed marriages? Come on Kaleta! What does that have to do with hockey? Score a goal or deliver a great hit. That's what the fans want to see. Not this WWE nonsense.

Game six recap

Just finished watching the Sabres lose game six to the Philadelphia Flyers. They were up 2-0 and 3-1 on home ice, only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The last time I saw somebody choke that bad was when Florida resident Jim Keane lost his bid for County Executive in 2007...

Williams on way out, Kane should be next

Superintendent James Williams is all but out the door. His decision to skip a meeting with New York state Deputy Education commissioner John King all but solidifies an end to his tumultuous reign of incompetence in Buffalo. From Mary Pasciak of the Buffalo News...
Buffalo School Superintendent James A. Williams is losing the confidence of a growing number of influential people, many of whom complain that the district botched its plans for the city's failing schools and consistently mishandles other long-standing issues confronting the system.
Among those losing faith in Williams are most of the stakeholders in the district: School Board members, parents, teachers, much of the business community, the local Regent and perhaps even the state Education Department.
The dissatisfaction with Williams reached a critical stage late last week, when the No. 2 person in the state Education Department came to Buffalo for a fact-finding mission to see how the school district is going to deal with nine of the city's most troubled schools.

If this blog contributed to informing residents of the Buffalo Public Schools corrupt administration in even the smallest of ways, I am grateful. People are now calling for an all out boycott of students on May 16th.

Many of the people who spoke with King last week say they believe the next two weeks will be a do-or-die time for the district -- and for Williams.
"The performance of the schools is really troubling," King said in a phone interview Friday evening. "Clearly the performance is not what anyone would want."
With Williams clearly on his way out, some senior members of his administration, and their ridiculously high salaries, need to follow him, quickly. Suburban resident James Kane has a preference for hiring the spoiled offspring of his politically connected friends. He is Williams' chief of staff, a position he inherited by virtue of being the entitled son of longtime political operative Don Kane. Kane has forgotten the lessons he learned growing up on Seneca Street. He has abandoned his roots and now only advocates for the politically connected from more affluent parts of the city (and suburbs). Personally, I've moved on to plan B but I can tell you this: As soon as the new superintendent comes to town, this blog will do everything in it's power to call for a complete housecleaning over at city hall, and that has to start with Buffalo's highest paid residency violator, James Kane. 2,500 people read my words last week, Kano. By this summer, it will be 5,000 a week, or I will die trying. You had a chance to advocate for someone outside of your comfort zone. You f**ked up, brother! We're spending $22,000/student each year in Buffalo and the results have been horrendous. The graduation rates are abysmal. You betrayed the Blogger. It's time for you to go...

Reenacting the crucifixion

Photobucket
A crowd watches as Victor Caparas takes part in a reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday at Cutud village, San Fernando city, Pampanga province, northern Philippines. Several Filipinos were nailed to wooden crosses Friday to reenact Jesus Christ's suffering in an annual rite that has been rejected by Catholic church leaders but draws thousands of tourists on Good Friday. (From the Associated Press)

They're going to do this next Easter at Potters and Abbott Rd. in South Buffalo. However, instead of nailing people to crosses, they are going to make them listen to State Senator Tim Kennedy and Erie County Legislator Tim Whalen attempt to speak for 20 minutes. Which is more torturous to withstand is subject to debate.

Congratulations to my good friend and soccer teammate for many years James "Doyle" Morgan of East Aurora. James, who his friends know as Bob, recently won $37,000 in a poker tournament in Atlantic City. He beat out 1,000 competitors to win the title. Get this: He played for 19 straight hours on only two hours of sleep. He probably woke up the next day and thought it was all a dream.

I can't think of two nicer people than Bob and his wife Stephanie. And I'm not just saying that because I plan on asking them for a $10,000 loan...

James Morgan (Buffalo, NY) is your Event 12 Champion.

He went from 220,000 to 3 million chips in two key orbits culminating with his QQ cracking opponent's pocket Aces.

Morgan came incredibly close to not re-buying after, as he put it, "playing like a moron" early. Playing on only 2 hours of sleep, after busting out, he stood in the re-buy line and his Borgata card failed to register. He threw in the towel then found out his wife Stephanie was still playing in the tournament. With nothing else to do, he decided to go ahead with the re-buy and the rest is history.

This was his first ever Borgata tournament. Stephanie and James drove down just to play this tournament then will head home. "They don't have affordable buy-ins like this where I'm from" said James whose small investment paid dividends to the tune of $36,731.

The Rajneesh movement:1982

I actually remember when this went down around 1982. A group of people from India descended into rural Oregon. They all wore red and worshiped a man named Rajneesh. He had about 15 Rolls Royce. His brainwashed followers worked 12 hours per day constructing the compound.

When the group wanted to expand and form their own city, the locals became alarmed. Rajneesh had a crazy assistant named Sheela. She came up with a plan to win seats in the local county government. First, she bussed in homeless men from cities all over the country and offered them food and shelter in exchange for their votes. Second, she sent some people out to the nearby town of Antelope and sprayed the local salad bars with Salmonella. Her goal was to poison the locals on Election Day, so they would be too sick to cast their vote. She was a real nice lady.

This is still considered the largest act of germ warfare ever committed on American soil. Here's an interesting 9 minute documentary on the whole story. What can we learn from this? If thousands of people from India move next door to your town, stay away from the local Ponderosa...

And now you find yourself in '82
The disco hot spots hold no charm for you

You can concern yourself with bigger things

You catch a pearl and ride the dragon's wings...

Of mace and men

Donn Esmonde of the Buffalo News showed his true colors once again with his column today. He takes the side of the anti war protester who was maced by an NFTA police officer. Watch the video at the end of this story and decide for yourself. The agitators live up to their name by almost inciting a riot. Their protest was supposed to be a peaceful one against M&T Bank executives (which I would normally agree with). However, it quickly turned against the police, who were simply trying to do their jobs and did not appear to be provoking them.

The civilian in question was clearly out of hand and resisting. If you read Esmonde's crap and don't watch the video, you would think the police were the aggressors. I've come after the police in certain stories where I feel they were wrong, but not this one. The mob outnumbered the police and began berating them and interfering with their efforts to control the protest. I love how Esmonde tries to justify the behavior of these aggressive, foul mouthed, troublemakers...

To be fair, this was not a crowd of flower-power hippies. The demonstrators— although philosophically nonviolent— were verbally confrontational to the cops, who represent the government whose policies they were protesting.

That's exactly where Esmonde and the protesters are wrong. The police might work for the government but that doesn't mean they "represent" or endorse all the policies of the government. Some of them might even agree with what the protesters were protesting. However, it was their job to make sure all the rules were followed. Just listen to the language of these protesters. Come on, losers. You're in your 30s, 40s, and even older. Grow up! You were clearly looking for a fight with the police. Don't cry to the media because you got one. If you lived in other countries you would have been shot or sprayed with water cannons for simply speaking out against the government. Continue fighting for peace, but don't start riots while doing it. Esmonde, you suck. Why the hell do you spell your first name with two N's anyway?
