Woman Accused Of Pushing 100-Year-Old Walmart Greeter - Video - WISN Milwaukee

A 100 year old Walmart greeter was shoved to the ground yesterday in Milwaukee. Lois Speelman began working at the store 10 years ago at the age of 90. The 37 year old customer has no past criminal record. People should not be so quick to judge the defendant. Speelman could be a sweet little old lady or a power hungry overzealous employee. We don't know. But assaulting her while she was attempting to do her job, looks like an overreaction on the face of it.

We attempted to contact Speelman's 6th grade teacher to ask her questions about her character but we're told she died 57 years ago...

MILWAUKEE – A 100-year-old greeter at a Milwaukee Walmart was shoved by a customer after the centenarian tried to stop the woman to determine if she'd paid for items that were in the lower part of her shopping cart, police said Monday.

Greeter Lois Speelman fell down and went to a hospital after she was shoved on Sunday."I'm bruised a little, but I'm able to go back to work Thursday," Speelman told The Associated Press from her home on Monday.

Letter to the editor- Stevie Johnson

I think Bills' fans are overreacting to Stevie Johnson's dropped pass from last Sunday. This guy has been one of the team's top performers this year and should not be judged by one play. I think it's about time we give the man a break and moved on.

Sincerely,

Ronnie Harmon

Niagara Falls flash mob

The word hate does not describe how I feel about these "flash mob" people. They were in a Niagara Falls food court the other day and broke out in song. They are almost as annoying as mimes, except mimes have the decency not to make any noise. I wish the people trying to eat their lunch would have thrown it at them...

Crime is up in South Buffalo

It's gotten pretty bad in the old neighborhood. Channel 2 did this story on my sister. Thieves broke into her house and stole some of her late husband's items (including his high school class ring). Be on the lookout. According to the weekly crime report, crimes such as this are up dramatically.

I've lived in the neighborhood in question for 38 years. Years ago, it was a good neighborhood. Not a wealthy neighborhood, but the families knew each other and looked after each other. Even the neighborhood "tough guys" had a sense of right and wrong. I remember years ago, some local "hoodlums" threatening to beat up a guy from outside the neighborhood. The guy had stolen my quarter from the top of a video game. Looking back, it's funny now, but those guys were incensed that someone from outside South Buffalo would rip off a young kid from the neighborhood. It wasn't a racial issue (the guy who stole the quarter was white). Even then, some of the guys from the South Park neighborhood in that group were of different races. If the person was cool/decent, he had everyone's respect (white, black, or Hispanic).

The sad part is the items stolen from Linda's house are irreplaceable. They have sentimental value. A million dollars from a benefit or a fundraiser could never replace them. The person who stole the items probably doesn't even know who Linda's husband was or how he died. I know some in the local news media found out about this a few weeks ago, but Linda didn't want to make a big deal about it. Hopefully, some or all of the missing items will turn up.

BUFFALO, NY - Linda Herbert told 2 On Your Side that burglars ransacked her home in the City of Buffalo and took precious items that belonged to her late husband, firefighter Don Herbert.

"The most devastating thing was the wedding bands and my engagement ring because that's something you can't replace," said Linda Herbert about a recent burglary at her South Buffalo home earlier this month.

Her late husband's high school ring from Bishop Timon was stolen, along with school rings belonging to her sons and her father.

Leslie Nielson dead at 84

Leslie Nielson dead? Surely, you can't be serious? I am serious. And don't call me Shirley. Nielson died today from pneumonia at the age of 84. He was best known for his roles in the classic movie Airplane! as well as The Naked Gun films. Nielson was Canadian and truth be told, I thought he died four years ago...

Johnson blames God for dropped pass in OT

Athletes are always praising God for their great performances. It's about time one of them blamed HIM for one of their mistakes. Bills Wide Receiver Stevie Johnson blamed his overtime drop on the man upstairs via a Twitter post after the game...

Stevie shouldn't blame God for the drop. Stevie Wonder could've caught that pass.
Photobucket

He's a great receiver who probably just took his eyes off of the ball for a fraction of a second. Maybe he lost concentration and began thinking about what type of celebration he was going to do. If it was Josh Reed, we wouldn't even be talking about a dropped pass. He would have never been open that deep to begin with. Johnson is a great athlete and he will bounce back. Maybe he can ask the guy in this clip for advice...

Houston vs Tennessee

You don't see fights like this too often in football. Andre Johnson vs Cortland Finnegan. They were fighting over who they thought should be the next American Idol. Johnson has a reputation as being very soft spoken. Finnegan is known to be a dirty player. He also gets paid $20,000/yr from Congressman Brian Higgins for a job with no apparent duties. Oh wait. That's his cousin, South Buffalo political hack Rick Finnegan...

Vacancy in the Erie County Legislature

This from Bob McCarthy's column in todays Buffalo News, regarding what political opportunist will be appointed to Tim "Little Antoine" Kennedy's vacant seat on the Erie County Legislature...

• With South Buffalo’s Tim Kennedy moving on to a seat in the State Senate, maneuvering is already under way to fill his vacancy in the County Legislature. Most speculation is centering around Tim Whalen, who is backed by Rep. Brian Higgins—and that is significant.

Also in the mix is School Board Member Lou Petrucci, another familiar name in city politics. Other names being mentioned include Brian Bollman, who works in the office of Council Member Rich Fontana; and Mark Rutecki, an employee of the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The thing to watch in this appointment is in which camp the new legislator lands. While Kennedy was part of a coalition friendly to Republican County Executive Chris Collins, a new legislator might not follow that route and chip away at the Legislature’s current majority.

The situation is expected to be addressed during a meeting of district committee members in early December.

Whalen will mark the third intellectually challenged candidate Higgins has endorsed in a row. (Jeff Conrad and Tim Kennedy were the other two.) Higgins obviously likes to choose people he can control, over those that actually possess leadership ability or intelligence. This way, they will never be a real threat to him.

The South Buffalo rooster tells me there is another candidate in the mix that has the backing of South District Councilman Mickey Kearns, as well as substantial support in Lackawanna. This unnamed candidate plans on running against whomever the Democratic Committee members are told to support. I'll have a name shortly.

It's been my longstanding belief that the entire Erie County Legislature is an irrelevant body. For decades, the all volunteer Board of Managers served the exact same function. They consisted of elected city and town leaders that met with one goal in mind:to approve the County budget. Today, we pay each legislator $43,000 for the part time job of doing the exact same thing! They do nothing else. For proof of this, see Barbara Miller-Williams. In addition to being a County Legislator, she was also a full time Buffalo police officer. She had the audacity to work overtime to pad her police pension upon retirement. How could she work a full time job, plus overtime, and have time to perform any duties as a legislator? Easy. As an Erie County Legislator, one has no duties! We formed an entire new layer of government, costing the taxpayers more money.

I've heard regionalism advocate Kevin Gaughan talk about the old Board of Managers, as well as many other people. It would be interesting to see a protest candidate run (say a South Buffalo blogger) and pledge to do everything possible to call for the elimination of the entire body. What an opportunity to educate the public on where their taxes are really going. You have the salary of the legislators, their full time assistants, and the cost of operating and heating their district offices. Trust me. We can survive without the likes of Tim Whalen or Lou Petrucci taking up space and pretending to be leaders. The candidate's signs could read: Vote for me and help me eliminate my useless seat.

Rocky transformation

This is why I hate sequels. The original Rocky was a great story about a punch drunk boxer who finally got a second chance in life. Throughout the movie, his lack of communication skills were what made the character memorable and iconic.

Getting punched in the head too many times made him who he was. Here is the ending scene, where he goes the distance with the flamboyant Apollo Creed (reportedly modeled after Muhammed Ali)...

Fast forward to Rocky IV. All of a sudden, the guy who couldn't put two sentences together in Rocky I, is an articulate speaker. After he defeats the Russian, Ivan Drago, he delivers this speech which ends the Cold War once and for all. "If I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!"

Vandalism reported at East Side cemetery

A disturbing story regarding the vandalism of an East side cemetery. However, the board member in this clip seems very determined to find out who is responsible and bring them to justice. They are looking for volunteers to help fix up the cemetery. This seems like a very good cause...

crime stats 11/19-11/25

The Miami New Time Blog posted an article on 11/19/10 titled “Mugshots Friday: Dented Heads, Bandanna Tattoos and Weird Beards” that included a mugshot of Carlos Rodriguez, a man who had been arrested for attempting to solicit a prostitute. The profile shot showed the man’s striking cranial cavity. The picture has been claimed to be authentic by the Miami New Times Blog, and they posted a follow up article containing a previous mugshot of the same man. Yes, the above picture is real.

Looking for Frosty

Photobucket

Remember when people used to have pizzas delivered to somebody's house as a prank? Apparently, those days are over. A family from Holland, NY was "swatted" this week. That's the term gamers use when a practical joke involving the SWAT team is played on one of their enemies. They called the police claiming a hearing impaired person was being held hostage inside Daniel Keem's home. Who would have ever thought gamers could exhibit such antisocial behavior? It's so unlike them. Keem says he's getting messages from other gamers saying the chief suspect is a guy who calls himself "Frosty". Frosty was unavailable for comment, but when we yelled upstairs from his mother's basement, she swore he was innocent.

On a side note, Keem was arrested for wearing his hat sideways. A town of Holland ordinance makes it a misdemeanor for a grown man to do so in public.

Sierra Blanca, Texas (WKBW-TV-ABC)

A U.S. Border Patrol spokesman says country singer Willie Nelson was charged with marijuana possession after 6 ounces was found aboard his tour bus in Texas.

Patrol spokesman Bill Brooks says the bus pulled into the Sierra Blanca, Texas, checkpoint about 9 a.m. Friday. Brooks says an officer smelled pot when a door was opened and a search turned up marijuana.

Authorities said they were alarmed when they opened the bus doors and it smelled like marijuana. They should have been alarmed if they opened the doors and it didn't smell like marijuana. There should be a clause in all marijuana laws declaring Willie Nelson exempt. The man is an American icon. He's an artist. Who really cares if he gets stoned as long as he's not the one driving the tour bus?

Reality television

American serial killer Rodney James Alcala makes an appearance on The Dating Game in 1978. He had already killed two victims before this appearance. The best part is, he was the bachelor that got chosen for the date! In what might be the greatest example of female intuition ever recorded, contestant Cheryl Bradshaw wisely decided to cancel after meeting Alcala backstage after the show. Interestingly enough, Alcala still was the second creepiest guy on the set that day. That title had to belong to the coke addicted host Chuck Barris. I wonder how the two guys who weren't picked felt?

This picture pretty much sums up today weather wise. One thing I find useful this time of year are vitamins D and B-12. If the short days are driving you crazy, I suggest you go to Walgreens. They sell these specific vitamins in bulk. Vitamin D is for lack of sunlight. Vitamin B-12 helps with stress.I notice a huge difference when I take them.

Why so pre-planned?

Photobucket
From today's Buffalo News...

Bills receiver Stevie Johnson was fined $5,000 by the NFL for his playful uniform statement at Sunday's game in Cincinnati.

The T-shirt quote was a reference to a statement by the character the Joker in the Batman movie "The Dark Knight." Bengals receivers Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco refer to themselves as Batman and Robin. Johnson also was fined $10,000 after the Week Three game against New England in which he mimed shooting a musket after scoring a touchdown. The Patriots have a mascot fire off a musket on the sideline after New England TDs.

As a young fan, stuff like this didn't bother me. In fact, I thought things like this were funny. However, in my advancing age, premeditated celebrations like Johnsons' bug me. There's an old saying amongst football players regarding behavior in the endzone: "Act like you've been there before." I agree with this 100%. Hopefully, fans in Buffalo will send Stevie Johnson a message. We don't like clowns like Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco around here. They have the same number of wins as they do reality shows. Instead of Batman and Robin, they should call themselves Lenny and Squiggy.
Photobucket

Johnson's one of the best players on the team, plays great every week no matter what the score, and brings with him an amazing story of NFL survival. However, look back at old films of Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison and let me know if they ever had to do stuff like this to get attention. They didn't. Probably because they were too busy setting NFL receiving records.

Car poppers

Buffalo police are putting tip sheets on car windshields to educate drivers on how to avoid having their vehicles broken into...

Since midsummer, officers have been placing what looks like a parking ticket on the windshields of cars but is actually a two-sided tip sheet with suggestions for ways to deter property thefts from autos, as well as car thefts and carjackings.

“Tip sheets are filled with common- sense practices to help people from becoming victims of crime,” Derenda said. “Lock your car doors; don’t leave valuables in plain view.”

As for advice on discouraging criminals who break into cars, the commissioner said, “Car poppers go around always looking. They’ll try the doors or break a window if they see something inside that they want. If the doors are locked and they don’t see anything, they move on to the next car.”

While I think it's good that they are finally making an effort to combat this crime, I think the commissioner is dead wrong with one of his tips. If the doors are locked and they see anything (ie.75 cents in your ashtray), they will smash your windows and steal it. For this reason, I always left my car unlocked when I worked downtown. I had the windows smashed twice. Both times, I didn't have anything valuable out. If you don't believe me,walk up Elm Street between Eagle and Clinton Monday through Friday and count the piles of broken glass on the sidewalk. How about putting some undercover police officers in known areas such as this and catching them in the act? How about throwing them in jail for longer periods to deter this quality of life crime? Trust me, having to replace your windshield or window in the middle of winter is a major pain (not to mention replacing whatever they decide to steal.) Commissioner Derenda left out one major tip which we'll add here:
1.) When at all possible, don't park your car in downtown Buffalo.
We know how tempting it might be to shop at the world famous Main Place Mall. However, none of the meters work and you will probably get a $30 ticket, even if your car doesn't get broken into. And they wonder why the only stores left in the mall are inner city street gear and nail salons...

More from the DeJac lawsuit

Although $30 million dollars might a bit too much, I think Lynn DeJac-Peters Cougar Melloncamp deserves something for spending 14 years behind bars. The key to Babcock perhaps? Actually, I hope the jury awards her $3 million dollars directly from former Disrict Attorney Frank Clark's and former Assistant D.A. Joe Marusak's bank accounts. They should pull Clark off the nearest bar stool and toss the red faced blowhard in jail for 14 years. He rivals Antoine Thompson and Tim "Little Antoine" Kennedy as one of Western New York's most incompetent public officials over the last 25 years. Check out the neon green sport-coat worn by Marusak at 0:30 in this clip, where he calls DeJac a "stone cold murderer." This idiot looks like he just won the Masters' golf tournament. It looks like he picked it up at the Salvation Army on the way to the courthouse. Herb Tarlek from WKRP called. He wants his jacket back...

In an unrelated matter, DeJac-Peters will be at Tops this week signing autographs. All proceeds will go to Camp Good Days and Special Times. She is also scheduled to appear next month on TV's Dancing With the Stars...
